Chapter 8 - His Confession

Chapter-8

AUTHOR

The arrangements for the reception party were causing her frustration, with each passing minute. She didn't know what to do anymore, all she wanted was a little break, but it was clearly just too much to ask for.

The start of the reception had already gone down with a rocky start, and now there was this. Her thoughts stopped short when her mother's phone started ringing, grabbing her attention.

"Ruby, could you answer my phone please?" her mother, Mrs. Syna Gerund, asked her.

Without a second thought, Ruby picked up the phone and answered, "Hello?"

"Baby, give my blessings to Pearl, okay? I'm sorry I couldn't make it," a guy spoke with a thick British accent.

Ruby stiffened at his words before checking the caller ID, which she should have checked before answering her mother's phone. Love was written across the screen.

Happiness flashed over her face as her mom was finally moving on, which was a good sign. She and Pearl hated to see their mother lonely, but they never had the courage to tell her.

"Ruby, who is it?" Syna called.

Ruby handed the phone to Syna, without saying a word before she ran over to Pearl.

Pearl was busy dressing for the reception party. Dressed in a nice long off-the-shoulder gown, that fit her body nicely. Ruby, however, was dressed in a sleeveless golden gown that complimented her complexion.

"Mom's dating!" Ruby squealed, as she closed the connecting door and faced Pearl who was busy putting on her lipstick. At Ruby's words, Pearl dropped her lipstick and turned to look at her sister wide-eyed.

"What!" Pearl asked, gobsmacked.

"I know right!" Ruby beamed with excitement.

"That's really good to know," Pearl chirped. "Oh, I forgot to ask, how do I look?"

"Fabulous as always," Ruby answered.

"You look amazing too. And may no-one cast an evil eye upon us," they said in unison and giggled. Their happiness knowing no bounds.

Soon, it was time for the reception party and they headed downstairs, where Pearl went and sat next to Kendrik.

After Syna talked to her lover, she had no doubt that her daughters had learned about her dating. From the excitement she saw on Ruby's face, she was sure that neither of her daughters had a problem with it, and rather, that they were happy for her.

Syna wanted to put her phone aside and focus on the party, but a sudden text appeared on her phone. Deciding that it would be the last thing she checked, she did so.

Unknown:
Vexon is in love with Ruby. If you don't accept his proposal, you will face the consequences. There will be a trailer waiting for you outside at eight pm sharp. Tick-tock, tick-tock.

Syna's phone fell from her grasp as she started trembling in fear, "My Ruby..."

When Ruby noticed Syna standing in a corner, she approached her with a smile, "Hey Mom, where did you disappear to?"

"Nowhere," Syna said, faking a smile. Seeing Ruby smile, she didn't even want to think about what would happen to her lovely daughter after eight pm. All she knew was, she had to protect her.

"Is something wrong?" Ruby asked.

"Nope, not at all," Syna answered, waving her off.

Ruby watched Syna fidget and knew she would do that whenever she was tense.

"You sure?" Ruby asked again.

Syna didn't want Ruby to know anything and tried to act cool. "Of course, dear! Go and check the arrangements again. I will stay with Pearl," she said in reassurance.

Ruby hugged her and she found some familiar peace, which she got whenever she hugged her mother. "After Pearl goes away, we will have our mother-daughter time, okay? Though it won't be daughters anymore, you still have one daughter left," Ruby ensured.

Syna patted her back, "Of course, we will, honey," she said, wishing for the same.

But who knew that that time wouldn't ever come? That cruel destiny had something else in store for them tonight? After all, Ruby's life was going to change forever.

During the party, loaded with people, two people stood in a corner, out of everyone's sight.

"He must drink this," one spoke, with an evil smirk plastered on their face, dropping a pill in a glass of orange juice.

"But what if our plan backfires?" the other asked fearfully holding the glass.

"It won't. I won't let him marry her," the first voice declared sternly, leaving no space to argue anymore.

"Then it's settled. Leave the important task to me, I'll make sure Vexon drinks it." So that his true emotions will come out and he marries Ruby, the person thought.

The lights suddenly dimmer as the newly wedded couple took to the floor for the first dance. While watching them, someone offered Vexon a glass of orange juice, thinking a waiter handed it to him, he took a sip.

When Syna's worries began to surmount, she had no other options but to run to Vexon. She knew the Bevines' profession. Besides, if Vexon really loved her daughter, he would definitely keep Ruby safe. Somehow she managed to find him in the middle of the dimmed ballroom.

"Mrs. Gerund, what's wrong?" he asked, looking over her stressed face.

"Vexon, you need to find Ruby and keep her safe with you. No matter what happens, don't leave her side. Someone is going to attack her," Syna explained and continued, "Please, it's a request. If something happens to her because of me, I won't be able to forgive myself. I cannot stay with her all the time because I also have to be next to Pearl and everyone will look for me."

Her words worried Vexon but he didn't want to show it. "Why don't you tell someone else to take care of her? I can assign my guards," he started, looked away, as he took a sip of his orange juice. Something was off about his drink, it tasted weird, funny somehow.

"Because I know of your true feelings for her," Syna answered, and his head snapped towards her. How did she know? "Please, keep her safe," she pleaded.

"Okay," Vexon mumbled and went to look for Ruby. Vexon had a bad feeling about things since the attack on the wedding. He was not sure why he was feeling this way, but after what Syna told him, he had no doubts that his bad feeling meant something was going to happen to his precious Gem.

The silence in the dark was like the calm before a storm. The heavy wind started blowing, the dark sky covering with grey clouds. A cold breeze blew inside the venue through the open windows, making people shiver at the sudden cold as it started drizzling slowly.

Perfect weather, ruined with conspiracies.

"Where will I find this girl now?" Vexon muttered, looking for Ruby and using his phone's flashlight. Unfortunately, the power had gone out due to the sudden storm, the dimmed lights going off, along with the music.

"I hope she's okay." The thought of her not being safe made his heart clench.

"Chill, Vexon, she is okay. She is okay," he assured himself, flashing the light here and there steadily, hoping to find Ruby.

Meanwhile, Syna glanced at the time on her phone.

7:59 p.m.

Only a minute to go.

Sweat started dripping down her temples, "I hope Vexon protects my baby," Syna murmured.

Inside a room, Ruby was busy eating some chocolate cake, when the power went off. At first, she thought it was due to the party. When a gust of wind hit her bare arms, a chill ran through her. Looking out the window she found that it was drizzling.

"Wow... Look how nice the weather is! I should go to the terrace," Ruby muttered, jumping up in happiness and rushing towards the terrace. She liked the rain very much, it was the weather that made everyone else gloomy, lazy, or sad, but Ruby found happiness in it and was usually very active at a time like this.

As soon as she reached the terrace, the small drops of rain touched her face, causing a shiver to run down her spine. She spread her arms out, enjoying the drizzle. Moving to the railing, she rested her elbows on it, feeling the cold breeze against her skin.

A smile evident on her lips, though it didn't last long.

A moment later someone pushed her from behind and Ruby flipped over the railing. She managed to grab hold of the railing in time, suddenly more afraid for her life than she had been earlier during the shootings. Ruby tightened her grip, knowing that she could die or be severely hurt from her fall.

"Help!" Ruby called out, hoping someone would hear her, but as the thunder and lightning struck, it made the chance of being saved slim.

The pill started to come into effect as Vexon stopped and asked himself, "Why am I looking for Ruby again?" He frowned, as it made no sense. "Should I look on the terrace? Why though? It's not like she would be out there in the rain, or think of committing suicide?"

Walking passed the terrace, he heard someone screaming for help even over the thundering of the weather outside. Without a second thought, he stepped outside.

"Help! Help! Is anybody there? Help!" Ruby's voice boomed over the whole terrace.

"Is that Ruby's voice? Or are my ears ringing?" Vexon asked himself, stepping up to the railing and holding it for support, as his vision started to blur. He was fully drenched, however, he wanted to verify if Ruby was really there. So he asked, "Is anybody here?"

Ruby's eyes brightened with hope. "Yes, I'm here!"

"Where?" Vexon asked as he scanned the terrace from left to right, even glancing up at the dark sky.

"Down!" the woman shouted, and as his eyes met hers, the dizziness dissipated.

"What the hell are you doing, Ruby?!" Vexon shouted at her.

"I'm playing Tarzan, what do you think?!" Ruby snapped back at him.

"No time for jokes. Be careful!" Vexon shouted, "Oh Lord, you're literally hanging from the railing. Don't let go!" he said, running his hand through his hair, trying not to think about what could happen if she did fall.

Ruby guessed his concern and tried to assure him, even though she herself was struggling to keep her grip and stay alive. "I'm okay for now, but if I stay like this much longer, I may not be okay. So, help me!" she stressed.

Vexon stretched his hand out towards her, bending further over the railing, "Give me your hand," he instructed.

Ruby nodded and started to struggle to grab hold of his hand.

"Be careful!" he shouted as she was about to try again, "You're gonna hurt yourself. Don't jump!"

Ruby yelled back, "Stop scaring me!"

After a lot of struggle, Vexon eventually grabbed hold of her hand and pulled her up. "Oh my —" but before she could complete her sentence, she was engulfed in a bone-crushing hug.

"You don't possibly know how scary that was for me. Every second was like hell when I saw you hanging there. You have no clue how concerned I was for you. You don't know how much I fear. You don't know how much I love you," Vexon confessed, as the last five years of pent up feeling rushed out of him, leaving Ruby to stare at him blankly and in utter shock.
