Chapter 4

Penulis: Drunken Beast
The next morning, while we were having breakfast in the hotel restaurant, I told everyone that I was leaving early.

Mabel was handing Ethan some bread, and the moment she heard that, she froze.

Ethan asked me first, "Alvin, are you feeling sick, or are you just not having fun on this trip?"

I smiled and replied, "I had a pretty good time, but I suddenly want to see some different places. So I think this is where our trip ends. Besides, I don't really know you that well. You don't need to worry about me like this. I don't like it."

Ethan immediately looked awkward.

Mabel frowned and criticized me. "Alvin, how can you be so rude? Ethan was just showing concern for you. Why are you purposely being rude to him? Are you upset because of what people said in the class group chat last night? You can be jealous, but don't take it out on Ethan just because he has a good temper."

When Mabel said I was jealous, there was a hint of pride in her eyes.

Even now, her first instinct was still to protect Ethan. She was even using my pain as proof of her own importance.

I took a deep breath and calmly looked at Mabel.

"This has nothing to do with those jokes. I don't care whether you like him or not. That's between the two of you. I just want to tell Ethan that I hope people can respect each other's boundaries. That applies to me and everyone else. I'm full. I'm going to the airport first. I hope you two have a great trip."

Mabel suddenly grabbed my hand. "Don't leave! If you're not jealous, then why are you suddenly leaving? I'll explain everything in the group chat, okay? Just sit down."

I pulled my hand away from hers. "I also hope you can respect my boundaries."

Mabel gritted her teeth and shouted. "Alvin, if you leave today, you will definitely regret it!"

I felt disappointed for a while, but later, I felt relieved.

Would I really miss something by leaving?

Even if I did, it didn't matter.

After all, because of Ethan, we had already missed countless chances with each other, hadn't we?

When I got home, my mom, Willow Colton, gave me a look. "So? How did it go?"

I looked at her in confusion. "What are you talking about?"

She clicked her tongue and explained, "Mabel's mom told me that Mabel saved money for a long time to put together a fireworks display so she could confess her feelings to you. Aren't you two officially together now?"

I lowered my head.

So this was what I had missed?

Without thinking, I swiped my phone screen and opened my social media.

Then I saw that Ethan had just posted something.

"Thank you for the amazing fireworks show, class queen. I had so much fun, haha!"

The picture showed a huge fireworks display and the two of them standing close together with their backs facing the camera.

I let out a sarcastic laugh.

Their love was so cheap.

I was lucky I missed it.

"Mom, I don't like Mabel anymore. I also changed my college application to Portwell. Please don't tell Mabel's parents yet."

Willow stared at me in shock. "You two had a fight?"

I only shook my head. I didn't want to explain too much.

"Mabel and I are finished. I'm going to Grandma's house for summer break. I'll come back before school starts."

In the past, whenever we fought, I was always the one who tried to fix things first.

But this time, I chose to let go.

So Mabel and I completely lost contact during those two months.

Before school started, Mabel's mom asked Willow if she needed to help us buy tickets for the same train.

Willow politely refused and told her that I would go to school by myself.

On the day I left for Portwell, I rested with my eyes closed during the nearly five-hour flight.

After the plane landed in Portwell, I took my phone out of my bag.

When I unlocked it, I saw many missed calls and unread messages from Mabel.

Another group of freshmen arrived at Portwell University in September. As a member of the Student Government, I was helping welcome new students at the entrance. When I saw Mabel struggling with a mountain of luggage, I thought I must have been seeing things. She hurried toward me with excitement written all over her face."Alvin, I got into Portwell University!"She pulled her acceptance letter out of her bag and looked at me hopefully."I worked hard for a whole year just to be with you again. Can you see how serious I am now? From now on, we'll stay together just like we did for the past 18 years."She paused, her voice trembling with tears. "From now on, I'll only take pictures of you."I frowned and took a step back."Why did you come to Portwell? I've already made myself very clear. There's no future for us anymore."The thought that she would keep appearing in my life made me feel irritated.Mabel froze for a moment. Then she picked up a gift bag beside her and held it out to me

Three months later, Carol and I started dating. It all happened naturally. We never had a formal confession or anything like that. One day after an outdoor photo shoot, I walked her back to her dorm. She stood on her tiptoes and kissed me.I froze for a second. Then I smiled and pulled her into my arms. But the next day, a message ruined the happiness of my new relationship.A high school classmate I was pretty close to asked me, "Alvin, didn't you say you and Mabel had a falling out? Are you two back together?"I frowned and replied with a confused question mark emoji. He immediately sent me a screenshot. It was Mabel's social media page. Over the past few months, every single post had been photos and videos of me.My classmate sent another message. "I don't check social media very often. I just happened to see one of her posts today, so I looked through the rest."Then he sent me several more screenshots.Every post Mabel made had a short caption. They were so overly sweet that they

Carol and I exchanged contact information. Whenever I ran into something I didn't understand at school, I would ask her. She always replied quickly and helped me figure it out. This week, the photography club was taking a trip to a nearby city for an outdoor photo shoot. They needed one more model, so Carol asked if I wanted to come with them, "The club will cover your travel costs and buy you lunch." I agreed right away. She had helped me several times already. It was only fair that I did something in return. After spending the whole day with the club, I got to know Carol even better. Whenever she taught the new members, she was always patient. She slowly explained how to adjust the camera settings and how to use different props. When she photographed the volunteers, she never cared what they looked like or whether they had any experience. She was never impatient with anyone. As I stood there watching her, I thought back to the first time we met by the beach. Love behi

Alvin's POVMabel came to Portwell that weekend. After receiving her message, I hurried downstairs. No matter what, we needed to clear things up.She stood under a tree holding several gifts, looking exhausted. But the moment she saw me, her face lit up."Alvin, it's been a long time."She hesitated before taking a few steps toward me.We hadn't seen each other for two months. We had truly never been apart for this long before.Mabel and I were born in the same maternity ward. We learned to walk together, went to school together, and grew up together...I used to think we would build a family together someday."Why?" She looked at me with hurt in her eyes and asked.I looked straight into her confused, tearful eyes."Mabel, do you remember the last time you took pictures of me? I'm not talking about the graduation trip. You didn't take any pictures of me then. I mean before that."Mabel looked anxious, but she couldn't answer.I knew she couldn't remember because all she had been doin

Third-person POVThe second day of freshman orientation at Northfield University was almost over. The crowds of new students checking in had slowly become smaller. Mabel's camera had captured countless unfamiliar faces, but not a single one belonged to the person she was looking for.She had originally planned to film an enrollment memory video for Alvin Colton. She thought that would help them move past their argument during the trip. But now...Mabel frowned. After finding the business school's registration area, she wanted to check if she had simply missed him. However, she learned from the nearby history department that all business school freshmen had already finished checking in.She started to wonder if she had overlooked him.Mabel immediately sent Alvin a message, but Alvin didn't reply. She then called him, but the call wouldn't go through. It wasn't until sunset that Mabel finally managed to reach Alvin. The other side of the call was very noisy.
