Chapter 1

Alvin's POVIt took me three minutes to revise my college application choices before I realized the tourist photographer Mabel Sutter had randomly stopped was still waiting.I was about to tell her I didn't need any photos after all, but she raised her camera first and smiled brightly. "Can you do me a favor? I'm a beginner. I think you really fit the scenery here. Could I take a sample set of photos for my portfolio? It'll be free. And if you don't like them, I'll even pay you 100 dollars."She caught me off guard and made me laugh. After thinking it over, I agreed. After all, I had spent extra time getting ready today, and I loved having my picture taken. But this was already the third day of our trip. Mabel had taken photos of the waves, the sunset, and countless pictures of Ethan Jilbert laughing without a care in the world. She had never taken a single one of me.I didn't even have one photo good enough to post on social media.Once the shoot started, the young photographer became

That night, I uploaded the photos from the day to social media.A comment I hadn't seen in a long time suddenly appeared."Wow, Mabel took so many amazing photos of you again. You're so lucky!"I froze when I saw it because it had been a long time since I had seen someone leave a comment like that.Even when we weren't traveling, Mabel used to take my everyday photos at the dorm and around campus all the time.I would upload them to social media every few days, so everyone knew those photos were taken by Mabel. But everything changed after Ethan transferred to our school a year ago.I checked my social media and realized I hadn't posted anything for six months.I replied to my classmate's comment. "These weren't taken by Mabel. A stranger took them for me. She was really talented."A few minutes later, Mabel also uploaded nine photos to social media. Every single one was of Ethan. The backgrounds in our photos were almost the exact same ocean view. It looked like we were competing with

I went to Aquatica World alone and spent the entire day there. When I returned to the hotel, I found that someone had uploaded a video in our class group chat. Our homeroom teacher also sent several smiling emojis."This is the graduation memory video Mabel made for our class. I've been too busy lately, so I forgot to upload it. Everyone can save a copy as a keepsake."I hesitated for a moment before clicking on it.In the entire eight-minute video, I only appeared for one second during the introduction. But Ethan appeared countless times.Ethan eating, Ethan studying, Ethan running...After watching it, I tossed my phone aside and lay on the bed with my eyes closed. The Osmo Pocket Mabel used to film this video was the birthday gift I bought for her after working as a car washer during two school breaks. We had used that camera to record countless little moments at school. But when she finally edited everything into a graduation memory video, my part was almost nonexistent.A classmat

The next morning, while we were having breakfast in the hotel restaurant, I told everyone that I was leaving early.Mabel was handing Ethan some bread, and the moment she heard that, she froze.Ethan asked me first, "Alvin, are you feeling sick, or are you just not having fun on this trip?"I smiled and replied, "I had a pretty good time, but I suddenly want to see some different places. So I think this is where our trip ends. Besides, I don't really know you that well. You don't need to worry about me like this. I don't like it."Ethan immediately looked awkward.Mabel frowned and criticized me. "Alvin, how can you be so rude? Ethan was just showing concern for you. Why are you purposely being rude to him? Are you upset because of what people said in the class group chat last night? You can be jealous, but don't take it out on Ethan just because he has a good temper."When Mabel said I was jealous, there was a hint of pride in her eyes.Even now, her first instinct was still to protec

Third-person POVThe second day of freshman orientation at Northfield University was almost over. The crowds of new students checking in had slowly become smaller. Mabel's camera had captured countless unfamiliar faces, but not a single one belonged to the person she was looking for.She had originally planned to film an enrollment memory video for Alvin Colton. She thought that would help them move past their argument during the trip. But now...Mabel frowned. After finding the business school's registration area, she wanted to check if she had simply missed him. However, she learned from the nearby history department that all business school freshmen had already finished checking in.She started to wonder if she had overlooked him.Mabel immediately sent Alvin a message, but Alvin didn't reply. She then called him, but the call wouldn't go through. It wasn't until sunset that Mabel finally managed to reach Alvin. The other side of the call was very noisy. Alvin sounded like he was at

Alvin's POVMabel came to Portwell that weekend. After receiving her message, I hurried downstairs. No matter what, we needed to clear things up.She stood under a tree holding several gifts, looking exhausted. But the moment she saw me, her face lit up."Alvin, it's been a long time."She hesitated before taking a few steps toward me.We hadn't seen each other for two months. We had truly never been apart for this long before.Mabel and I were born in the same maternity ward. We learned to walk together, went to school together, and grew up together...I used to think we would build a family together someday."Why?" She looked at me with hurt in her eyes and asked.I looked straight into her confused, tearful eyes."Mabel, do you remember the last time you took pictures of me? I'm not talking about the graduation trip. You didn't take any pictures of me then. I mean before that."Mabel looked anxious, but she couldn't answer.I knew she couldn't remember because all she had been doin

Chapter 7

Carol and I exchanged contact information. Whenever I ran into something I didn't understand at school, I would ask her. She always replied quickly and helped me figure it out. This week, the photography club was taking a trip to a nearby city for an outdoor photo shoot. They needed one more model, so Carol asked if I wanted to come with them, "The club will cover your travel costs and buy you lunch." I agreed right away. She had helped me several times already. It was only fair that I did something in return. After spending the whole day with the club, I got to know Carol even better. Whenever she taught the new members, she was always patient. She slowly explained how to adjust the camera settings and how to use different props. When she photographed the volunteers, she never cared what they looked like or whether they had any experience. She was never impatient with anyone. As I stood there watching her, I thought back to the first time we met by the beach. Love behi

Three months later, Carol and I started dating. It all happened naturally. We never had a formal confession or anything like that. One day after an outdoor photo shoot, I walked her back to her dorm. She stood on her tiptoes and kissed me.I froze for a second. Then I smiled and pulled her into my arms. But the next day, a message ruined the happiness of my new relationship.A high school classmate I was pretty close to asked me, "Alvin, didn't you say you and Mabel had a falling out? Are you two back together?"I frowned and replied with a confused question mark emoji. He immediately sent me a screenshot. It was Mabel's social media page. Over the past few months, every single post had been photos and videos of me.My classmate sent another message. "I don't check social media very often. I just happened to see one of her posts today, so I looked through the rest."Then he sent me several more screenshots.Every post Mabel made had a short caption. They were so overly sweet that they

Chapter 9

Another group of freshmen arrived at Portwell University in September. As a member of the Student Government, I was helping welcome new students at the entrance. When I saw Mabel struggling with a mountain of luggage, I thought I must have been seeing things. She hurried toward me with excitement written all over her face."Alvin, I got into Portwell University!"She pulled her acceptance letter out of her bag and looked at me hopefully."I worked hard for a whole year just to be with you again. Can you see how serious I am now? From now on, we'll stay together just like we did for the past 18 years."She paused, her voice trembling with tears. "From now on, I'll only take pictures of you."I frowned and took a step back."Why did you come to Portwell? I've already made myself very clear. There's no future for us anymore."The thought that she would keep appearing in my life made me feel irritated.Mabel froze for a moment. Then she picked up a gift bag beside her and held it out to me
