LOGINKATHERINE POV
I struggled to focus on my work as I sat at my desk, my colleagues discussed him, and I tried to keep my composure and appear unaffected. My heart skipped whenever the phone rang, but fortunately, he didn't call me, and as soon as it was closing, I hurriedly left to go home. Charlotte wasn't home and I hoped she would get back by dinnertime, I called Angela and Lucy on Facetime and waited for them to connect. “What's up, Kat! Thought you'd forgotten about your best friends.” Lucy's voice was spirited, too spirited. I let out a frustrated sigh. “You guys know who the CEO of my workplace is? The guy you set me up with at the club two years ago.” They both gasped in surprise before replacing it with a mischievous glint in their eyes. “That's so hot, Kat.” Angela cooed. “You two are unbelievable! The guy is my boss! My boss. The CEO for fuck sake.” Lucy laughed, “Come on, it wasn't as if you didn't enjoy it. Besides, what's the harm in some office romance? You said he hit all the right places, remember?” My cheeks almost exploded from blushing so hard. “Office romance? He's my employer and it's inappropriate. I don't think I can face him again. I need to resign immediately.” “Sorry, what?” They asked in unison. “You are going to throw away such an amazing opportunity because of a one-night stand?” Lucy asked with her brow creasing into a deep frown. “You guys don't get it, it's embarrassing,” I said, pouting. Angela chimed in, “Have you thought of Charlotte’s college fees? You can't just walk away from this job. Who knows? Maybe something great could come out of it.” I sighed. “What do I do guys? It is embarrassing enough that I slept with a younger guy and more embarrassing that the younger guy is my boss.” Lucy's voice grew serious. “That's life, it throws unexpected challenges to one. You need to think about Charlotte’s future.” I ruffled my hair. “You're right. I need to focus on my work and on Charlotte’s future, I will pretend it never happened.” Their faces lit up again. “That's the spirit!” Angela said, “Besides, think about it, both of you are alone in the same office…” She drawled. Lucy giggled. “Time for some hot sexy steamy romance. I blushed, the thought making me squirm. “Stop it, both of you! You're making this worse.” We chatted a bit and ended the call. I stared at my phone. I have to do this for Charlotte. The next day as I sat on my desk sorting papers, the landline rang and I picked it up. “Katherine Turner from the Financial Analyst Department.” “Adrian. I’d like you to come to my office at your earliest convenience,” My heart raced as I heard his voice, I wondered what he wanted. “Mr. Sterling?” I said, my heart racing. “Of course, I’ll be there shortly.” I said as I tried to steady my uneven breath. “Thank you,” Adrian said before ending the call. I took a deep breath and smoothed down my clothes, I pushed back my chair and made my way to Adrian’s office. When I reached the door, I knocked lightly and listened for Adrian’s voice to invite me in. The room’s sleek design mirrored Adrian’s success and modern taste. He gestured for me to take a seat in front of his desk, and I did, keeping her stance straight. Adrian regarded me with curiosity. “Ms. Turner, I'm glad you could join me,” he began. “I wanted to discuss your role at Sterling Corporation. How are you finding it so far?” I struggled to maintain my professional facade. “Everything is going smoothly, Mr. Sterling. Thank you for asking.” Adrian leaned forward and locked his eyes on mine. “Good to hear. It's important to me that my employees are settling in well.” He paused before he continued. “Your move from the UK to the USA was quite sudden. What prompted the change?” Oh, shoot! My expression shifted for a while but I quickly regained it and swallowed hard. “It was for personal reasons,” I replied briefly. Adrian nodded as his gaze turned intense. “I see. Well, we have a number of projects coming up that may require your expertise.” He leaned back in his chair and I saw him go through some files on his desk. “Have you had a chance to review the financial reports from last quarter?” “I have,” I answered. “There were a few areas I noted for improvement with the rest of the team, which I've included in my report.” Adrian nodded in agreement. “I appreciate your ambition, Ms. Turner. Perhaps we can go over your findings later this week.” She met his gaze and quickly averted his gaze. “With your teammates of course.” He paused again. “You know, it's quite a coincidence seeing you here after all this time,” he mused. “I remembered our encounter in the UK two years ago quite vividly.” I shifted uncomfortably in her chair, why was he bringing this up now? “That was a long time, Mr. Sterling,” I responded and diverted the conversation back to work. “I'm focused on my responsibilities here.” Adrian smiled, “Of course, of course, I'm just wondering if you've forgotten about that night.” I squirted uncomfortably, trying so hard to be professional, this was embarrassing enough. “I will suggest we forget the past and focus on the fact that we are an employee and employer.” Adrian smirked. “That works for me.” It seemed as if he was teasing me. “Thank you, Sir.” I stood up and prepared to leave. “Katherine,” Adrian’s voice stopped me as I reached the door. I could swear I almost turned into a jellyfish, the way my name rolled out of his tongue. Damn! I turned, and he was walking closer to me, a little bit closer, and my breath ceased. There was a serious look in his eyes. “Are we going to pretend that night didn't happen? I've been yearning to see you again and fate just brought you to my company.” his breath fanned me. “Mr…Mr Sterling.” the words struggled to come out of my mouth. His gaze locked onto mine. “I haven't been able to stop thinking about that night.” “You…you should, it is in the past.” I struggled to say. He smirked as his eyes darkened with an intensity that made my pulse quicken. “I don't want to.” Just as I was about to respond, his phone blared, interrupting the charger moment, and seeing it as an opportunity, I dashed out of the office.Adrian’s POV. I leaned back in my chair, staring at the document on my screen, but my mind wasn’t on work. I couldn’t focus. My father’s words from last night still echoed in my head, gnawing at me. “Why the hell did you take her daughter to the event?” he had snapped when I arrived that evening. His voice was as cold as ever, dripping with disapproval. I’d lied, said Mr. Sterling gave permission, but we both knew that was a weak excuse. My father didn’t care about reasons, he cared about control. “You’re done with the project, Adrian,” he had said, his tone sharp. “Get rid of her. Sack her immediately.” I’d tried to reason. “We haven’t found a replacement yet—” “I don’t care,” he cut me off. “After the party tomorrow, I expect her to be gone. If you don’t handle it, I will.” The knot in my stomach tightened. I hated these conversations with my father. Everything was a dem
Katherine’s POV.I was trying to blend in, standing by the wall, fiddling with the strap of my purse. The ballroom was buzzing with chatter, laughter, and clinking glasses. But it felt like I was the only one not having a good time. And then, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted her. Vera.I stiffened instantly. The last person I wanted to see today.I tried to look away, but she’d already seen me. Of course, she had. Vera always had a way of finding people when they didn’t want to be found. Before I could even think about slipping away, she was walking straight toward me, her heels clicking against the marble floor. She had that smug look on her face, the one that made me feel like she already knew what she was going to say—and how it was going to hurt.“Well, look at you,” Vera said, her eyes scanning me from head to toe. “Trying to look fancy, I see.”I stayed quiet, not trusting myself to speak. I didn’t want to give her any
Katherine’s POV. It was a new day. Charlotte had already left for college early in the morning. I stood by the window, sipping my tea, watching the empty driveway where her car had been parked just an hour ago. She was growing up so fast. I smiled. I had my daughter back. It had never felt so good before. I needed to get ready myself. Adrian wasn’t coming to pick me up today; because– you know why. I’d asked Zoe to swing by since she had a car. She’d agreed, thank goodness. I wasn’t in the mood for the long commute alone. I headed to the bathroom to start my morning routine, deciding to apply a quick face mask before the rush. I felt sluggish, maybe a bit overwhelmed by the day ahead. The party later loomed over me like a cloud, but I pushed the thought aside, focusing on the moment. When I returned to the bedroom, wiping my hands dry, my phone was buzzing on the dresser.
Katherine’s POV. Later that evening, as we all gathered around the dinner table, I could feel a strange tension lingering between Ashley and Owen. She sat next to me, absentmindedly pushing her food around her plate while Owen and Adrian engaged in a lively conversation about business. Across the table, Charlotte and the kids were giggling, recounting the highlights of the day’s events—how it was the ‘best birthday ever.’ My attention drifted back to Ashley. Did she tell him? I could see her mind was clearly elsewhere. I leaned in closer, my voice barely above a whisper. “How did it go?” I asked, my hand brushing hers in a gentle, reassuring gesture. She sighed, her lips pressing together for a moment before she shook her head. “I didn’t get the chance to tell him,” she murmured. Her voice was soft and filled with frustration. “The kids ran in befo
KATHERINE POV. Saturday afternoon. Ashley looked nervous as she reached out and gently took my hand. “Come with me,” she whispered, glancing around. Without waiting for a reply, she led me toward the terrace, where the warm afternoon air greeted us. The noise from the party faded behind us, replaced by the soft rustle of leaves and distant laughter. I looked at her, puzzled. “Ashley, what’s going on?” I asked, trying to keep my voice calm despite the knot forming in my stomach. She took a deep breath, turning to face me. “I’ve been waiting for you to come,” she admitted softly. “I’m the one who asked Owen to convince you all to come over.” My brows knitted together in surprise. “You did? Why? Is everything okay?” Ashley shook her head, her gaze dropping to the ground. “No, it’s not,” she confessed, placing a hand on her stomach. “You were right
Katherine’s POV. SATURDAY. The next morning, I woke up early. Sunlight streamed through the large window, casting a warm glow over the room. For a moment, I just lay there, staring at the ceiling, trying to gather my thoughts. Today was the big day—the event, Mr. Sterling's twins' birthday, and Charlotte's birthday, all wrapped into one. It felt like there was so much happening at once, and I wasn't sure how it would all unfold. After a quick shower, I dressed in one of the outfits Adrian had sent us. It was a lovely dress, simple yet elegant, and it made me feel a little more confident about the day ahead. I heard a knock on my door just as I finished getting ready. “Mom, are you up?” It was Charlotte's voice. “Come in,” I called, and she opened the door, already dressed and looking more excited than ever. “You look beautiful,” I said, smiling at her. “Than
ADRIAN POV.Vera was unusually quiet after our talk, her eyes watching me, filled with suspicion. I didn’t care. I leaned back in my seat, pretending she wasn’t there. After a while, she spoke up. “Let’s have a banquet,” she said, her voice calm but with an edge to it.The servers qui
ADRIAN POV. The next morning came too fast, Vera was already in the penthouse, dressed like she was walking a runway—extravagant, over-the-top, and clearly aiming to impress. But I couldn’t care less. My mind was elsewhere, far from the charade in front of me. Lil
KATHERINE POV. The next day, I arrived at the office with William as usual. He parked the car, and I thanked him before stepping out. He smiled and told me to have a good day, and I forced a smile back. My mind was still on last night’s argument with Adrian, and
KATHERINE POV.By the time I arrived at the office, I had managed to put up a decent facade. I plastered a polite smile on my face, greeting my colleagues as I walked to my desk. But inside, I was a mess, my emotions all tangled up in a knot that I couldn’t seem to unravel.I sat dow
