The next morning I woke up with a giddy sensation. I remembered Marco's hands inside me and I blushed.

I looked around, but there was no sign of Marco, then I looked and saw a note by the drawer

Urgent business, be safe emily.

I stood up from the bed and walked to the bathroom. After a quick shower and dressing in a simple blouse and jeans, I headed downstairs.

“Good morning ma'am,” Jonathan greeted me. I smiled at him.

“Good morning Jonathan, I would love a quick breakfast, something light, I'm in a good mood today.”

“Yes mi lady,” he bowed, imitating the gesture of the 19th century.

I went to the dining table and sat down, waiting for my breakfast. Once I was done eating I headed out to one of Marco's cars.

“I think I should come with you ma'am, it's not safe, at least not yet.”

“It's okay Jonathan, the driver will take me to and from work. I'll be safe inside, there's nothing to worry about.”

Jonathan looked uneasy, but he bowed then moved forward to open the car door for me to enter inside.

“Thanks Jonathan.”

The car drove off, by the time I arrived at the office building, things felt off. I brushed it off, thinking it was probably because I had not been in the office for a while.

The usual guard stationed at the front wasn’t there, I stepped into the lobby, and the receptionist barely acknowledged me.

I waved, but she didn’t return the gesture. Her eyes were locked on her phone, hands trembling slightly.

What was going on?

I walked further, to my office on the fifth floor, I entered the elevator and I began pondering in what I had just witnessed. Something was definitely wrong.

By the time I got to my office, I heard a click and then the power went out.

"What the hell?" I whispered, standing up.

The emergency lights flickered on, i walked to my door and peeped through the hole.

Then I heard heavyheavy matching the hallway, my heart started racing and I locked the door.

A second later, someone pounded on it. "Emily Taylor! Open the damn door. We know you’re in there."

I backed away from the door, my hands trembled as I picked up the landline. There was no dial tone, the lines were cut. I checked my phone but there was no service.

I had no weapons, nothing that could protect me. I grabbed the sharpest thing I could find, a heavy metal paperweight shaped like a globe. I backed into the far corner of the room, holding it tightly.

The people at the other end of the door began forcefully opening the door till the door finally burst open.

Two men stepped in, both masked, dressed in all black.

"Grab her," one said.

I threw the globe, but it missed, one of them lunged, grabbing my arm. I fought hard, clawing and screaming, but he slammed me against the wall. Pain shot through my shoulder.

Then I heard the sound of Gunshot, he man holding me collapsed.

The other turned, only to be shot square in the chest.

I looked at the door, it was Marco.

How did he find me.

That question didn't matter, what mattered was the fact that he was here now.

He stepped into the room with a gun in his hand, his face was furious, eyes wild. Two more guards rushed in behind him.

I stood there, with blood on my shirt as tears burned behind my eyes.

Marco rushed to me, grabbing my face, checking for wounds.

"Are you hurt? Did they touch you?"

"Just my shoulder... I think I’m okay," I breathed, still trying to process everything.

He pulled me into his arms.

I shook against him. "You came. You saved me."

He looked me in the eyes. "You are never leaving my sight again."

More guards poured into the building, checking the rest of the floors.

Later, once the place was secured and the bodies were taken out, Marco walked me out personally, one arm protectively around me.

"Who were they?" I asked Marco as we got into the car.

He looked at me. "One of the rival groups your father used to work with before betraying them. They were waiting for an opportunity. And you gave them one."

I felt the guilt slam into me like a wave. "So this is my fault?"

He grabbed my hand tightly. " I warned you not to leave the house, at least till I said so. But you won't listen,  you just broke another rule Emily, what are you going to do about that?."

Marco had a sly smile on his face, I couldn't understand this man, how he could switch his mood so fast.

As the car sped toward the estate, Marco's hands grabbed my butt firmly. "I think I know what your punishment will be Emily."

  • Love in lies   The Lie

Tears welled in my eyes, and I turned to look out the window, my entire body felt like ice. Lucan’s voice dropped. “Just… be careful. Some of your enemies are closer than you think.”He unlocked the door. “Go. Before he finds out you’re gone.”“Emily,” Lucan called out, I turned “Think about what I said, I love you Em.” He said and without waiting for a response zoomed off. I walked slowly back into the house, not even noticing the guards returning to their posts.Marco was sitting in the living room, scrolling through his phone. When he saw me, his brow furrowed.“Where were you?”My mouth opened, but nothing came out. What Lican said made sense, I had to observe thi ga first and I figure out which side of the war I was really standing on.I looked at Marco and smiled, “I just stepped out for fresh air. The air here was becoming stuffy.” Marco patted a spot on the couch for me, I walked to the couch and sat down. He placed one hand on my forehead and felt my temperature. “Your b

The next morning, I woke up with a stuffy nose, and my forehead was burning. "You’re awake," Marco said softly. He was sitting on the edge of my bed, a wet towel draped across his arm. His brows were furrowed with concern, he looked like he hadn’t slept."You really are so weak, I can't believe you caught a cold from sleeping on the floor." Marco said teasingly. I smiled at him, I felt so weak, my throat was sore, and my body ached all over. I blinked at him, touched by the care in his voice. Something had definitely changed in Marco, it wasn't like the cold, calculating Marco from before. Each time I felt a little bit uncomfortable, in a matter of seconds he'll be beside me, petting me ensuring I was okay. He stayed beside me the entire day, making sure I took my medication, adjusting the blankets, holding my hand when the fever made me shiver. He even refused to let anyone else nearme.z when Jonathan came to see how I was feeling, he dismissed him.Later in the afternoon, Jona

  • Love in lies   I love you Emily

Marco walked over to me, his eyes looked serious now. “Listen to me carefully, Emily. If you ever see her again anywhere, you text me immediately. You hear?”My heart skipped. “What's going on Marco? Who is she?”He ran a hand through his hair, there was this hesitant look in his eye. Then he let out a long sigh and sat beside me.“Her name’s Seraphina Marchesi.”Seraphina Marchesi? This was the first time I was hearing that name. “She’s a mafia heiress, her father runs one of the oldest families in the region. They were once allies with my father’s group.”I didn't quite understand why family ties would make this Seraphina look at me that way. Or could it be…?My stomach tightened. “Were you with her?”Marco’s gaze darkened. “Before you and I… yeah, we had a thing. It wasn’t love, it was purely physical, I needed a woman and she needed a man.” He said avoiding my gaze. “It was convenient, and when I got married to you—” “You were still seeing her,” I finished quietly. The look of

The sun was warm and the morning felt unusually peaceful, a rare thing these days. The morning felt very peaceful, I woke up feeling different. Marco had gotten up before me. I suddenly felt the need to do something for himAn idea popped in my head, why don't I cook for him? It sounded simple in my head, I'll make hil a proper meal. One made with love… love? That sounded a little weird. I was beginning to really feel like a wife. I took a quick shower and threw on a pair of jeans and a loose white blouse, tied my hair up, and headed downstairs. Jonathan raised an eyebrow when I asked for one of the cars.“Good morning ma'am” he said as we approached the car. “Good morning Jonathan, I'm going to the grocery store,” I said quickly, and I smiled at him. “but It’s not safe yet,” he reminded me, like he always did.“There’ll be guards following me from a distance, right?” I added. “Just don’t smother me.”He sighed but nodded, then gave instructions to the driver and one of the taili

  • Love in lies   I was hers

MARCO'S POVAs I walked out of the room, I felt conflicted. The words “ I love you, Marco” kept replaying in my head, for once in my life I was confused. I didn't know what to do. I walked to my room, I tried putting everything behind me, but I couldn't. I paced up and down the room, but the room felt suffocating. She had no idea what she’d just done. No idea what it meant for me to hear that. For a woman like her to love a man like me.She had seen what I was capable of, she had seen the darkness, the lies and deceit that surrounded me and still she wanted to be with me. I wanted to protect her from everything, but most especially from myself.I rubbed a hand down my face, stopping near the window. My reflection stared back at me, my face looked tired and my eyes were a little sunken. I looked like a man torn in two.You don’t get to have this, I told myself. But when I closed my eyes, all I saw was her. Her soft voice. Her shaking hands. The way her eyes looked when she dropped h

I didn’t go straight home after leaving Seraphina’s. I needed to breathe. Get ahead of whatever fallout was coming.Because there would be fallout. Her father wouldn’t take this lightly. The Marchesi were power-hungry, territorial, and arrogant enough to believe they were untouchable. Cutting ties with them didn’t just end a personal affair, it meant stepping on a landmine. One I was prepared for, one I’d known I’d eventually have to face.I leaned against the hood of my car in the middle of the empty lot behind the club I owned downtown. Lit a cigarette. Watched the smoke spiral into the air as I stared at nothing. What the hell was I doing?I had built my empire with rules, no attachments, no weaknesses, no distractions. Everything was about leverage and survival. But ever since Emily walked into my world, it hadn’t been the same. She wasn’t just a contract anymore. She wasn’t just someone I’d taken to save her family or fulfill some promise. Somewhere along the line, I’d started w
