20.01.2026 03:05:33I woke up this morning with a migraine. Aaron doesn’t care that I have to be up this early for work. Since he is the boss he can stay up as late as he wants and party. I hate that it’s come to me working for my brother. After taking some medicine for my head, I hopped in the shower and got ready to start the day. As I was fixing my breakfast, Aaron informs me that he hired a new wheat handler. I am to collect all his paperwork and get him into the system.
“Why can’t you get your girlfriend to do it? You know I don’t like talking to the new guys you hire.” “Listen Skyla, I promised Mom and Dad I would take care of you and Dad’s wheat fields. You are part of this family and you are going to work for the business like I do. Jenna is asleep and is sore. I don’t want to wake her so you are going to do it.” “Sore? Never mind I don’t want to know. Fine, I’ll do it but I swear if this guy starts hitting on me like the last, I’ll quit.” “Whatever. Hurry up and eat. He will be here at 8:30.” I finished making my breakfast and sat down at the table. Aaron went back to bed and I rolled my eyes at what he said to me. He didn’t promise Mom and Dad crap. He knew if anything happened to them, he would take over and would get all the money my parents had. I still remember everything from the day it happened. (Flashback… Ring... Ring... Ring... Hello? Yes, this is Skyla Doughty. What? How? Oh my god. Click... “Aaron wake up! AARON!” “What in the hell are you screaming and banging on my door for, Skyla?” “I-I-it’s bad Aaron. M-m-mom and dad.” “What about them? They will be home soon.” “No, they won’t. Aaron, the hospital 2 towns over just called and informed me that there was a bad accident, and Mom and Dad didn’t make it.” “What in the hell are you talking about? Stop f*cking with me Skyla!” “I’m telling you the truth, Aaron! Mom and Dad are dead! They were in a bad accident and they didn’t make it! Call the hospital if you don’t believe me!” End of flashback…) It’s been 2 years since they were killed in that accident and Aaron thinks he has the right put me to work in the family business just because they aren’t here. I can’t wait until I have enough money saved to get the hell away from him. Mom and Dad would have never made me do something I didn’t want to do. After I finished eating, I grabbed the laptop and got everything ready to put the new guy into the system. I sat back at the desk and waited for him to show up. He is late! It’s 8:45 when I see a black pickup pulling up to the house. The truck door opens and my mouth drops. Holy f*ck! He isn’t an old perv like the rest of them. He is young and looks close to Aaron’s age or even younger than him. He knocked on the door and I let him in without saying a word. “Sorry I am late, Ms.Doughty. I got lost trying to find the house.” “I-it’s ok um..” “Caeleb, Caeleb War.” “It’s ok Caeleb. Now I need the packet my brother gave you to fill out and I need to get a copy of your driver's license, and social security card and do a background check on you.” “Yes, ma’am. I did inform your brother when we spoke that I do have a bit of a record. He knows what for and told me it wasn’t a problem.” “I’ll confirm that with him as soon as I get a chance.” “Yes, ma’am I understand.” “Good lord you make me sound a lot older than I am calling me ma’am. My name is Skyla.” “I understand, Skyla.” I turned when he said my name and my cheeks began to burn. I won’t lie and say he isn’t attractive because let’s face it, he is freaking hot!

After we left the restaurant, Caeleb asked if I wanted to ride around and talk. I told him that was fine because I knew he was curious as to what happened with Aaron and I. We rode around in silence for a little while before Caeleb pulled over on a dirt road that led down to a lake and he turned the truck off. "Ok, Skyla. What happened with Aaron?" "Well, he yelled at me and questioned where I've been. He grabbed me by the arm. I told him he didn't have the right to question me because I am now an adult. I pulled away from him after I told him I knew all about him keeping things that belonged to me from me and I knew about the money my parents left for my first car and about all the other stuff the lawyer told me and I could see he was panicking on the inside and was trying to hide it. I waited until 1 P.M. to call Aaron. I wasn't going to let him control me like he used to do. I already knew what to expect when he picked up the phone. I was right. He began yelling at me, saying I had him worried all night, and he was so concerned he was about to call the police. I told him to calm down and call off the search party. I told him I was fine, and I was safe. He asked where I was, and I told him he didn't need to know where I was at. That all he needed to know was I was fine. He started yelling again, saying I needed to tell him where I was at. I yelled back at him and told him he didn't have the right to question me. I told him that now that I am legally an adult he has to stop acting like he is my parent. I refused to tell him where I was, but I'm sure he knows I am with Caeleb. As soon as he started yelling at me again, I hung up on him and turned my phone back off. Caeleb asked if I wanted to order something for lunch and I told him that sounded good. We ended up pic

I woke up to snoring and something heavy across me. My heart began to race and I was on the verge of freaking out when I realized I was in Caeleb' s bed. I lifted his arm and gently placed it on the bed as I got up. I went into the bathroom and did what I needed to do then washed my hands and face. Caeleb was still sound asleep when I exited the bathroom. I went into the living room area and grabbed my phone off the table. I had 3 text messages from Aaron and 1 missed call from him. I rolled my eyes and opened the text. * * Skyla, where are you? It's almost 2 A.M. * * * * Skyla, Hello? Where are you? * * * * If you aren't home or if I don't hear from you by noon, I am calling the police and reporting you as a missing person. * * I laughed at the last text he sent me. I walked out of my room and straight out the door. I didn't care if he was yelling at me asking where I was going. I am now an adult and I don't have to answer to him anymore. I walked down the road and when I got to the first red light coming into the town, I stopped. I looked around and tried to figure out somewhere to go. I decided to head to the little coffee shop down the street. I walked in and ordered a blueberry bagel and a coffee. When my order was ready, I went and sat down at a table and began eating.
