JEFFREY

I sat down at the dinner table, directly across from Ronald and Kyla. I sighed, just perfect.

My mother had pulled the classic guilt card, claiming she hadn’t seen me in forever. I should’ve known it was a setup. And now here I was, trapped in a diner where the two people I was trying not to think about were sitting side by side, smiling like everything was okay.

I barely had an appetite, but I forced myself to spoon some rice onto my plate. If I didn’t, she’d fuss. And I didn’t want Ronald getting the satisfaction of knowing he could affect me this much.

Dad was all in Ronald’s face, asking about stocks, trade deals, mergers, he probably believed Ronald walked on water, with how highly he thought of him. Mum, on the other hand, was doting over Kyla like she was royalty.

I was relaxed at least, because they managed to keep the spotlight off me.

But of course, that peace didn’t last.
