LOGIN“Your wedding anniversary, Sir. It was yesterday.” Frederick answered cautiously.
Ethan was lost for words. He ran a hand through his hair, feeling a strange feeling in his chest. He had totally forgotten. He leaned back in his chair with a slight sigh. It all made sense now, the fancy meal, her awkward silence. Ethan didn’t like the idea of changing. Brielle had always been there for him from the moment they were together. She would not abandon him like that; maybe she just tried to make a point, hoping he would pay more attention to her so he didn't mind being the bigger person this time. “Cancel my evening meetings. I'll be heading home early.” Ethan added while rubbing his temple. *** Later that evening, Ethan stayed true to his words and left work earlier than usual. It wasn't a form of apology. He didn't like loose ends. He entered the house, expecting the usual busyness he returned to every evening. Instead, he was met with darkness, piercing silence. The lights were off, and there wasn't a single sound from the kitchen. He found it strange that Brielle was always waiting in the kitchen or the living room for his arrival, attacking him with questions about his day and trying to help him get out of his clothes. But now there was nothing. “She can not still be mad.” He sighed and descended the stairs until he appeared before her bedroom door, which felt oddly unfamiliar. Even though it was his home, he barely stepped into the room, only on occasions when he spent the night with her. He knocked once. “Brielle?” He called in a bored tone. No answer. He tried again and eventually turned the doorknob, opening the door himself. The room was nice and clean. He didn't notice much difference. “She’s probably out,” he thought as his eyes scanned the room. Ethan pulled out his phone to call her but realized his phone had been so quiet today. Usually, Brielle would send him hundreds of texts throughout the day, telling him how her day went and sharing everything that happened. He never answered those texts, thinking it was a waste of time since he always had more important things to do. Today, there wasn’t a single text from her. That was odd. Ethan decided to call directly instead. The phone rang and rang, but there was no answer. Ethan's patience was running out, and she finally picked up. “Where are you?” Ethan questioned straightforwardly, but Brielle mumbled words he couldn’t understand. He didn't get the chance to ask again until he heard the noise over the phone. Loud music, laughter, and clinking of glasses flooded his ears through the phone. He knew where she was so well that he didn’t need to ask. "You are at a club and got yourself drunk?" Ethan frowned, and the coldness in his voice couldn't be denied. “Wait a minute,” Brielle said, and a loud ruffle was heard before the noise quieted down, signifying that she had moved to a quiet place. "Send me the address, and I'll pick you up." Ethan rubbed the knot between his eyebrows. “There is no need to worry; I'm with Ella.” She said, referring to her childhood friend. "You'd better-" “Have you signed the divorce papers?” Brielle didn’t wait until he finished. “If it is because of our anni- ” Ethan ran his fingers through his hair, trying to talk to her serenely. He was clearly not used to being the one to say sorry, so he looked a bit awkward. “Have you signed them?” Brielle cut his words again. She was not in the mood to hear anything from him, only about the divorce. "Don’t play this game with me, Brielle. You won’t get anywhere with it. Threatening me with a divorce will not make any difference." As Brielle interrupted him twice, Ethan was already irritated. He didn't know when she would drop that, but he always thought she was smart enough to know when to stop. Ethan ended the call without another word, the line beeping in Brielle’s ear. For the first time, Brielle didn't stare at her screen in desperation. She only stared at it with relief. Ethan was always the one to hang up, and Brielle always called after, hoping they could talk more. But now it was different. She expected nothing from him. Brielle walked back into the still-buzzing club and soon found her friend, Ella, approaching her with two drinks. “That was a really long call.” She passed the drinks to Brielle, looking concerned. “Is everything okay?” “I'm fine," Brielle answered, but a bitter smile lifted a corner of her lips. "Brielle, you have suffered so much, and I'm happy you've finally taken the first step." Ella hugged her and then stared at Brielle right in the eye, making her feel there was nowhere to hide, and Ella finally asked that one question. " So, why now? What made you change your mind to end it now finally?"EPILOGUE Two Years Later. Ethan exhaled for the umpteenth time that day. No matter how much he did, it didn’t seem to calm his nerves. He looked to the side and saw Vivian holding little Ryan, his and Brielle’s son, dressed in a matching white suit and black bow tie. “Dadda!” He yelled from where he sat and everyone in the church laughed. The orchestra played and the large church doors soon opened to reveal the star of the day. Brielle stood, draped in a mouth-watering princess wedding dress and a veil that covered her face. Even though he had not seen her face, he knew she looked breathtaking. She walked slowly, Raymond beside her, taking the place of her father whom she wanted nothing to do with. Ethan’s eyes blurred with tears as he watched her march towards him, her wide smile visible through the veil. She finally got to the altar, Ella helping her arrange her veil from behind as she settled and stood facing him, giving him a good view of her face. She was gorgeous. “You
The walls closed in on him, suddenly feeling small. Claustrophobic. His lips parted but no words came out. His breathing was ragged and his fingers trembled. “L-leaving? What do you mean she’s leaving?” He finally found his voice but his eyes remained bloodshot. Full of pain. “She came to the office today to resign, then announced her departure. Her flight leaves today so, I think she’s either at the airport or on the air.” Bella answered. “If you truly love her and want to make things right, you know what to do.” She said, her voice low. Then, she turned and walked away, leaving Ethan to himself. As soon as she left, something in him snapped and he checked his wristwatch, every tick causing his heart to break. He didn’t have time. He quickly pulled out his phone from his pocket and dialed Frederick’s number. “Mr Ray—” “Find out what airport Brielle is at and what country she’s going to. Immediately!” His tone was urgent and demanding, letting Frederick know that a lot
Brielle walked off as soon as she was done with her statement, leaving Scarlett to herself, seething in anger. She couldn’t believe that she had just walked out on her when she wasn’t done speaking. She had come all the way down to the hospital to see her and possibly taunt her more. How dare she make her waste her time? She furrowed her brows in annoyance and was about to open her mouth to speak when her phone buzzed. She pulled it out of her bag to see what it was and as soon as she did, her face lit up, her lips lifting as a smirk formed on her face. It was a message from Ethan asking if they could meet up that afternoon. Without wasting any time as she knew how easily and quickly Ethan changed his mind, she quickly typed her response, agreeing to his date. A date… That’s what it had to be. “Men really never get over their first love.” She tsked, shaking. Her head as she watched Brielle get into a cab. “That’s right, honey. Run as far as you can. This is a lost battle anyway. Et
“I’d like to resign, Dr.”The words left Brielle’d chest with a heavy thud. Before then, it had just been a thought in her mind but, as she stood before her senior doctors, she realized that that thought was about to become her reality.“Brielle…” Dr Lorey whispered, her expression sad but understanding.Dr Graham on the other hand, looked like he had been preparing himself for this moment. Over the past few weeks, he had noticed how sad and disturbed she had been even though she always tried to put on a smile at work. He knew she needed a break even before she realized it herself.“How long will you be gone for?” He asked after a while, a calm smile resting on his features.“I don’t know yet,” Brielle replied. “I might be gone for a while.”Dr Graham nodded and stood up, walking towards her. “We were lucky to have someone like you in Crystal Hospital. Sadly, your stay was short. One thing I can tell you is that you will be missed, Brielle Evans.” He admitted and gave her a fatherly h
The noise in the restaurant blurred out, making Brielle’s voice the only thing he could hear. His chest tightened as the pain of rejection pierced him. He lowered his head in defeat and took a deep breath.“I’m really sorry, James. A relationship is the last thing on my mind right now. I’ve been wanting to tell you for a while now but, I didn’t want to spoil the friendship we have.” Brielle apologized again, her expression turning sad.Professor James shook his head and finally looked up, his lips curled into a sad smile. “It’s fine, Brielle. Don’t feel bad.” He said, making his peace with her stance.A part of him knew something like this would happen but, he was clinging on to whatever final hope there was. As long as she didn’t say the words herself, he was going to keep dreaming. Now, that hope was completely shattered. It was finally time to stop dreaming.“I-I don’t hate you for that. I’ve always held a special place for you in my heart and I’ll continue to do that, even though
Later that night, Brielle kept to her promise. She stepped out of her apartment in a blue knee-length dress with her hair perfectly styled. She wore minimal makeup, good enough to hide the dullness in her eyes. When she got out of the building, ready to get into a taxi, a car honked loudly, calling her attention. She turned to see Professor James getting out of the car and walking towards her with a wide smile and a bouquet in his hands. He was dressed in a white corporate shirt and black trousers to match. She also noticed that he had gotten a fresh haircut. She sighed inwardly, her guilt resurfacing. She could only imagine how much she had been waiting for this dinner, seeing how enthusiastic he was about it.“Flowers for a beautiful woman.” He said, handing her the bouquet.Brielle blushed at his compliment, extending her hands to take the bouquet. “Thank you.” She said.He nodded, rubbing his hands together even though it did nothing to calm his nerves. He had been preparing for t
