“Your wedding anniversary, Sir. It was yesterday.” Frederick answered cautiously.
Ethan was lost for words. He ran a hand through his hair, feeling a strange feeling in his chest. He had totally forgotten. He leaned back in his chair with a slight sigh. It all made sense now, the fancy meal, her awkward silence. Ethan didn’t like the idea of changing. Brielle had always been there for him from the moment they were together. She would not abandon him like that; maybe she just tried to make a point, hoping he would pay more attention to her so he didn't mind being the bigger person this time. “Cancel my evening meetings. I'll be heading home early.” Ethan added while rubbing his temple. *** Later that evening, Ethan stayed true to his words and left work earlier than usual. It wasn't a form of apology. He didn't like loose ends. He entered the house, expecting the usual busyness he returned to every evening. Instead, he was met with darkness, piercing silence. The lights were off, and there wasn't a single sound from the kitchen. He found it strange that Brielle was always waiting in the kitchen or the living room for his arrival, attacking him with questions about his day and trying to help him get out of his clothes. But now there was nothing. “She can not still be mad.” He sighed and descended the stairs until he appeared before her bedroom door, which felt oddly unfamiliar. Even though it was his home, he barely stepped into the room, only on occasions when he spent the night with her. He knocked once. “Brielle?” He called in a bored tone. No answer. He tried again and eventually turned the doorknob, opening the door himself. The room was nice and clean. He didn't notice much difference. “She’s probably out,” he thought as his eyes scanned the room. Ethan pulled out his phone to call her but realized his phone had been so quiet today. Usually, Brielle would send him hundreds of texts throughout the day, telling him how her day went and sharing everything that happened. He never answered those texts, thinking it was a waste of time since he always had more important things to do. Today, there wasn’t a single text from her. That was odd. Ethan decided to call directly instead. The phone rang and rang, but there was no answer. Ethan's patience was running out, and she finally picked up. “Where are you?” Ethan questioned straightforwardly, but Brielle mumbled words he couldn’t understand. He didn't get the chance to ask again until he heard the noise over the phone. Loud music, laughter, and clinking of glasses flooded his ears through the phone. He knew where she was so well that he didn’t need to ask. "You are at a club and got yourself drunk?" Ethan frowned, and the coldness in his voice couldn't be denied. “Wait a minute,” Brielle said, and a loud ruffle was heard before the noise quieted down, signifying that she had moved to a quiet place. "Send me the address, and I'll pick you up." Ethan rubbed the knot between his eyebrows. “There is no need to worry; I'm with Ella.” She said, referring to her childhood friend. "You'd better-" “Have you signed the divorce papers?” Brielle didn’t wait until he finished. “If it is because of our anni- ” Ethan ran his fingers through his hair, trying to talk to her serenely. He was clearly not used to being the one to say sorry, so he looked a bit awkward. “Have you signed them?” Brielle cut his words again. She was not in the mood to hear anything from him, only about the divorce. "Don’t play this game with me, Brielle. You won’t get anywhere with it. Threatening me with a divorce will not make any difference." As Brielle interrupted him twice, Ethan was already irritated. He didn't know when she would drop that, but he always thought she was smart enough to know when to stop. Ethan ended the call without another word, the line beeping in Brielle’s ear. For the first time, Brielle didn't stare at her screen in desperation. She only stared at it with relief. Ethan was always the one to hang up, and Brielle always called after, hoping they could talk more. But now it was different. She expected nothing from him. Brielle walked back into the still-buzzing club and soon found her friend, Ella, approaching her with two drinks. “That was a really long call.” She passed the drinks to Brielle, looking concerned. “Is everything okay?” “I'm fine," Brielle answered, but a bitter smile lifted a corner of her lips. "Brielle, you have suffered so much, and I'm happy you've finally taken the first step." Ella hugged her and then stared at Brielle right in the eye, making her feel there was nowhere to hide, and Ella finally asked that one question. " So, why now? What made you change your mind to end it now finally?"Ethan checked his wristwatch as he bolted out of the office building. It was already almost midnight. Thankfully, the streets were still very much alive but without traffic. He ignited the car engine and zoomed off, his hands shaking with nervousness as he went over what he was going to tell Brielle over and over again.“You got this, Ethan.” He told himself, remembering Anita’s words.Thirty minutes later, he arrived at the house and it was a few minutes past midnight. He sat in his car for a minute, prepping himself for the final time.“I…I—” he tried rehearsing the words but failed to get them out. He then decided to just go with the flow line Anita said. She was sure he would get the hang of it once he was in front of Brielle. He finally got out of the car and entered the house. He was met with an eerie silence with not even a cricket helping to break it. He walked up the stairs and stopped in front of Brielle’s door. After taking a deep breath, he knocked once. There was no respo
Anita arrived at Ethan’s office one hour later. When she pushed open his office door, the sight she was met with sent tears to her eyes.Ethan was sprawled out on the little couch in his office, his hair ruffled, his face wet with tears, and his expression like he had just lost a loved one.Anita’s heart broke more than it did when she heard his voice over the phone.“Oh, Ethan.” She sighed and sprinted towards him. She went to where he was and sat on the floor, holding his head in her hand.“Hey… I’m here now, okay.” She said, wiping her tears as she didn’t want him to see her cry. After a while, she finally decided to bring up what they spoke about on the phone. “What did you tell her?” She asked.Ethan remained silent, only the sound of his sniffles leaving him could be heard.“When she told you about the pregnancy, what was your response?” She asked, more clearly this time.Ethan raised his head and she was met with his bloodshot eyes. The sight broke her further. He stared at her
“I’m pregnant.”There was an eerie silence in the dining room as soon as the words left Brielle’s lips. She looked at Ethan intently, searching for any kind of reaction from him but, she got nothing. He had blanked out…completely.Minutes passed and not even a sound had left his lips. He just stared at her like he was looking at a ghost. Not being able to take the silence anymore, Brielle spoke. “Ethan?” She called out.Nothing.“Ethan?” Still no response.“Ethan!?” She raised her voice, slamming her hands on the table. Her heart was starting to race as the thought that he might hate the idea of having a child entered her head.He blinked, clearly coming out of whatever daze he was in. “Did you hear what I said?” She asked. His mouth opened…then closed. Then, it opened again but no words came out.He couldn’t find his voice.“I said I am pregnant, Ethan. We’re having a baby.” She said more clearly and his eyes widened, his breath loud enough for her to hear.“Ethan!”The chair scraped
“I think I’m ready to tell Ethan about the baby,” Brielle said after taking deep breaths, her heart still pounding.“Oh…” Ella responded, her tone unsure.“What is it?” Brielle asked, her heart dropping at Ella’s tone. She didn’t expect Ella to be excited about the idea, but that certainly wasn’t the reaction she expected.“Honey, I’m just shocked. That’s all.” Ella confessed, making Brielle more nervous than she already was.“The reason you didn’t want to tell him about the pregnancy was because you felt he was too irresponsible to father your child and you didn’t want your child to be raised by someone like Ethan. Why the change of heart?” Ella asked, sounding genuinely concerned for her friend and future godchild.Brielle exhaled, “While I cannot say that Ethan has had a complete 360 change, I can say that he has shown a little change, and that is enough for me, Ella. It’s not like I’m accepting him back into my life. That chapter is closed, Ella. But, the child is his as much as i
Two Days LaterA groan leaves Jessica’s lips as she stirs awake on the cold, hard floor, her body instantly recognizing the harsh sleeping environment. She tries to sit up but a sharp pain in her back forces her down. She hisses immediately, cursing Brielle and Ethan for putting her in this situation.“I’m pregnant for fuck’s sake. I shouldn’t be sleeping on the floor.” She grumbled, blinking the tears away.A ruffle is heard from the other side of the holding cell and a chuckle follows. “Then don’t commit crimes. If you care so much about your child, you wouldn’t have tried to kill someone.” An older lady who had been in the cell a few hours before her said, sounding annoyed at her groaning.Jessica rolled her eyes. “I don’t remember talking to you. Why don’t you mind your business?” She answered in an irritated tone then turned away.“I’ll watch my tone if I were you.” The woman said, feeling offended at Jessica’s words. “You wouldn’t want to get on my bad side. We might share a roo
The police station smelled faintly of coffee and disinfectant, the usual blend of late nights and weary officers. Brielle sat across from Officer Joe, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her knuckles pale from the pressure. Ethan stood beside her, his arms crossed, his tall frame tense with impatience.“Nothing?” Brielle’s voice broke, a fragile mix of disbelief and frustration.Joe sighed, sliding a folder across the table. “She must have known we’d try to check her phone. Every trace of data—messages, call history, apps—completely wiped. Whoever did it knew what they were doing.”Brielle’s heart sank. She leaned back in her chair, staring at the blank wall behind him. The image of Hannah’s bruised face, the sound of her fragile voice asking for help, rushed back into her mind. The phone was supposed to be their weapon, their chance to expose Jessica for what she had done. Now, it felt like sand slipping through her fingers.Ethan’s voice cut into the silence, low but sharp. “So yo
