“Jessica is pregnant.”
The words stung hard as they left Brielle’s lips. Ella froze mid-sip, the music of the club now long forgotten. “What?” She asked, leaning in with wide eyes. Brielle only nodded, not bothering to raise her voice- she didn’t need to. The truth echoed louder. Jessica had shown up as one of Ethan’s many flings a year ago, but unlike his other flings, he had kept her for longer. She had been in the picture for a year, even though Brielle had never seen her. Even though Brielle never showed it, it bothered her because, like all playboys, Ethan had a rule. “Never stay with a woman for more than a week.” Unlike the others who followed the rule, Jessica had stayed for a whole year! But she suddenly showed up a week ago, claiming to be carrying Ethan’s child and begging Brielle to let Ethan go so she could have a place in his life. “She came to you?” Ella’s mouth parted as Brielle narrated, and she nodded slowly. “That witch has got some nerves!” She shook her head in disbelief. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The club lights flickered above them, casting a soft glow on their calm faces. “I thought I could wait him out, El,” Brielle whispered. “I thought that maybe one day he’d grow up and leave his playboy lifestyle and see that I was enough for him. I was so foolish, El, and this pregnancy of hers was a wake-up call for me.” Her eyes dulled as she remembered the bittersweet moments of her life. On her wedding day, she was the happiest she had ever been. She thought marrying him would change everything, and her love for him would soften him- heal him, maybe. Instead, she had her heart broken that same day. He came in on their wedding night and handed her a safety pill, shattering every dream of her having a child with him. “There would be no children. It’s a temporary marriage, after all. It’ll be a waste of time to have a baby.” He said on their wedding night. “He just doesn’t want a baby with me.” She whispered bitterly. Ella’s throat tightened. She stood and hugged Brielle and held her for a long moment. “Anyway, you’ve done the right thing. You have no idea how happy I am to see you taking charge of your life, Bri!” Ella pulled back, taking Brielle’s cheeks and cracking a slight grin. “And look around, my friend. A dozen hot men are waiting for a single lady like you! You already look like a goddess, so all you have to do is make your own choice!” She shrieked. Brielle smiled faintly but shook her head tiredly. “Maybe next time.” After her call with Ethan, Brielle was emotionally exhausted, and all she needed was a good night's sleep. **** Across town, on the top floor of the R Group Electronics building, Ethan walked into his office, his lips in a thin line. The usual smirk he always had on his face- a move that always had the ladies squirming at his feet, now gone and replaced with a frown. If Brielle had planned to irritate him and spoil his mood for the rest of the day, she would have succeeded wildly. "Why must she make such a big deal of it?" Ethan shook his head with a scoff. He wasn't bothered by Brielle, for god's sake, and he hated that something was out of his control. He was still caught up in his thoughts when a knock came in. The woman entered his office, swaying her hips seductively as her heels tapped softly against the polished floor. “You look exhausted, Ethan.” The woman said in a sweet and caring voice, calling his attention. “I made it myself, just the way you like it.” Jessica stepped closer, placing a cup of coffee gently on his desk. “Thank you.” He grabbed the coffee and took a sip. The taste immediately hit the back of his throat, leaving him with a slight frown, but it disappeared immediately with no trace. “If there is nothing, you may leave. I have a few things to take care of.” Ethan indicated that when he placed the cup down, he never touched it again. She cleared her throat. “Alright. I’ll leave now. If there’s nothing else you need-” “Wait -” Ethan stopped her, making her face light up. "Yes?" Jessica's breath hitched in expectation, a smile tugging at her lips. “Tell Frederick to come in,” Ethan said, his eyes still on the computer. Jessica’s smile faltered, and her shoulders sagged in disappointment. “Of course.” She said with a professional nod. As Jessica walked away, her eyes flickered with something meaningful no one had noticed.Brielle shut the door to her apartment and leaned against it, her suitcase long forgotten at the door. The silence in her home was calming, a sharp contrast to the chaos she had just left behind. She dragged her feet into the room, dropped the suitcase near the closet, and collapsed onto the bed.As soon as her body touched the mattress, the tears came. Uncontrolled, heavy sobs broke free from her chest as she buried her face into the sheets. All the emotions she’d kept bottled up poured out of her anger, disappointment, heartbreak, and above all, shame.Shame that she had let the situation with Ethan drag on for so long. Shame that she had ignored the warnings and continuously lied to herself…convinced herself that things would change and that maybe he would become the man she wanted. But, she was only fooling herself. She was a coward who blamed her inability to walk away from toxicity on her love for Vivian.Brielle bawled her eyes out that night until sleep finally took her.*****
Ethan runs a hand through his hair in frustration. Just when things were getting slightly better between him and Brielle, they come here and do this! With blazing eyes, Ethan turns to his sister and Jessica who was stationed beside her, holding her arm like her life depended on it. “Make sure you are both gone by the time I return.” He pointed at them, eying his sister with both disappointment and rage.“I thought you were on my side, Anita. I trusted you.” His voice was laced with hurt that was deeply rooted.Anita opened her mouth to speak but no words came out. She knew she was wrong and had crossed the line but she was too strong-headed to admit that.“Don’t come to the house anymore, Anita. I’m not playing this time. You know how I feel about backstabbers.” He warned in a stern voice that sent shivers up Anita’s skin. For the first time in her life, she saw him as a man. Not the little boy she always scolded. And that was when she realized that the relationship she once had with
Jessica sat comfortably on Brielle’s bed like she owned it, her suitcase placed boldly beside the dresser. Anita settled beside her, one leg crossed over the other, staring at them without a care in the world.“What the hell is going on here?” Ethan’s voice thundered through the room.Neither Jessica nor Anita flinched.Jessica lowered her eyes like a cornered deer, pressing her hand to her stomach as though protecting the child within her.A move meant to make Ethan believe her claims.Anita, however, rolled her eyes lazily and met Ethan’s glare without fear. “Why are you shouting? We’re not intruders. We let ourselves in.”“In my house?” Ethan growled. “And in my wife’s room? Have you both gone mad?” He pointed toward Brielle, whose shock was evident on her face. However, she remained silent.Jessica sniffled softly. “I…I told her this wasn’t a good idea, Ethan,” she murmured, “but she insisted—she said it’s your child and I needed to feel safe, and…”“Oh shut up!” Ethan snapped, cu
Ethan sat in the sleek luxury desk at his office, eyes skimming the contract on the table while his business partner went on about a new expansion plan. He tapped a pen lightly against the folder, paying rapt attention to what he was saying and trying to go through the document at the same time. Just as the man across from him leaned forward to discuss revenue projections, Ethan’s phone buzzed beside him.He glanced down and saw the name: Brielle. His heart skipped in a good way.“Excuse me,” Ethan said, raising a hand. “Give me a minute. I need to take this.”The business partner nodded immediately. Seeing the bright look on Ethan’s face, he thought that it might be his wife.Ethan stood and walked toward the glass wall at the edge of the room, answering the call.“Brielle?”“I’m sorry to interrupt,” she said quickly. “I know you’re probably busy.”“It’s fine,” Ethan said, already softening. As a matter of fact, he was glad she called. It was something she rarely did these days. “The
“W-what?” Brielle blinked, catching her breath. “She was just brought in. Dr Graham has gone to take a look but it isn’t looking good for her. I just wanted to let you know. I have to leave now.” Dr Lorey said hurriedly and the line clicked, leaving Brielle with so many unanswered questions. “Oh dear God.” She panicked as she hurried out of bed and into the bathroom. Brielle splashed cold water on her face, gripping the edges of the bathroom sink as she stared at her reflection. Her eyes were tired, filled with worry, and heavy from the little sleep she had managed to get. The news about Nurse Joy had shaken her to her core, and every bone in her body felt restless. She couldn’t sit still, not when someone she had just spoken with the previous day was fighting for her life. She changed into a pair of brown trousers and a black blouse, tying her hair up into a loose bun before grabbing her coat. She skipped breakfast entirely and rushed out of the house, not bothering to even check
Brielle stared at him with hooded eyes. Of all the times he could have overheard their conversations it had to be now.Vivian clapped happily and grabbed her handbag. “Alright then! My work here is done!” She turned to Ms Gwen and stood.“We shall be on our way now! See you soon, my loves!” She cheered happily and waltzed out of the house, leaving a furious Brielle with Ethan. As soon as Vivian left the house, Brielle turned to Ethan. Her jaw tightened and her eyes narrowed as she stared at Ethan, arms crossed tightly over her chest. “You really agreed to that?” she asked, her voice calm but laced with irritation.Ethan sat down on the sofa, watching her with that annoyingly cool expression he always wore when he knew she was upset. “It wasn’t a big deal, Brielle,” he said, shrugging like he hadn’t just agreed to let his mother hire a sex therapist to meddle in their already ended marriage.“Not a big deal?” Brielle echoed, eyebrows arching sharply. “You sat there, smirking like an id
