Outside the New Restaurant

The day wickedness begins always starts like any other day. Bright, sunny, and full of promise. No one realizes that beneath its cheerful face lies a day they will one day wish had never begun.

Mateo stood outside his newest restaurant, checking everything one last time. He had staff for this. He had a whole team. But he never trusted anyone else to handle the final details before an opening. If something went wrong, he wanted to be the one who caught it.

He looked around and frowned. Wayne wasn't there yet.

He pulled out his phone and called him.

"Where are you?" Mateo said, the moment Wayne picked up. "This is not the day to be late."

"Relax," Wayne said. "Turn around."

Mateo turned. Wayne was standing right behind him, by the glass doors, grinning like he hadn't just made his best friend wait.

"Congratulations, man." Wayne threw his arms out. "Smile a little. This is supposed to be a good day."

"Where have you been?" Mateo asked, not smiling at all.

"I had things to take care of. It was for the party. I'll explain later, I promise."

Inside the Restaurant, Later That Evening

The event started at four and ran for three hours. Toward the end, Mateo took the microphone to say a few words. He thanked his parents for trusting him with the business so young. He thanked his staff for their hard work. Then he looked over at Wayne.

"And of course, my friend here," Mateo said, smiling. "If he didn't already run his own company, I'd have made him my director by now."

"No, thank you," Wayne called out from his seat, and the room burst out laughing.

Mateo had been running the company since he was twenty-one, right after finishing college. He'd studied through a distance-learning program so he'd have time to learn the business properly, working alongside his father the whole way through. In the seven years since he took over, he'd grown the company from four restaurants to eight, and had recently bought land outside the city to build a private retreat — somewhere quiet enough for politicians and business owners to disappear to when they needed to get away from everyone chasing them for something.

A few minutes later, Mateo cut the ribbon at the entrance. People clapped. Some came up to hug him and shake his hand.

Then he noticed Wayne wasn't in the room anymore.

Where does this guy keep disappearing to?

He excused himself from the small crowd around him and went looking.

Upstairs

Mateo's assistant, Nate, caught up with him near the stairs.

"Boss, I need to tell you something," Nate said, stepping into his path.

"Have you seen Wayne?"

"He's upstairs, but first, I really need to—"

"Tell me on the way." Mateo was already moving.

Nate followed him up, still trying to get a word in, but Mateo wasn't listening. He was too annoyed that Wayne had vanished during one of the biggest nights of his life.

At the top of the stairs, Mateo stopped.

"What—"

He turned back to Nate, who just looked at him, helpless, like there was nothing left to explain.

  • Love me back to life   Chapter 25

Outside the AmbulanceMirabella's scream cut through the quiet parking lot like something breaking. For half a second, everyone froze — the doctor still turning from Queen, the guards still standing at careful attention, the paramedic still gathering his things inside the vehicle. Then the world caught up with itself all at once, and everyone moved.Queen was the first through the doors of the ambulance, shouldering past a nurse without so much as a glance, her hands already reaching for her son's wrist like she alone had the authority to confirm what Mirabella had just felt. Her guards followed, then the doctor, then two nurses who'd been standing under the canopy only moments before discussing him in the past tense."Move," Queen said, to no one in particular and everyone at once, and the crowd parted around her the way crowds always did."His hand," Mirabella said, still gripping it, refusing to let go even as bodies pressed in around her. "It moved. I felt it, I swear I felt it—"

Grovemont Private Hospital The vehicle slowed. Stopped. For a moment, no one moved. The paramedic sat with his hands folded loosely between his knees, the posture of a man who had delivered his verdict and had nothing left to do but wait for the doors to open and let the rest of the world in on it. Mirabella lifted her head, just slightly, enough to see Wayne's hand still resting where she'd left it. She didn't reach for it again. She wasn't sure she could survive reaching for it again and feeling nothing back. The back doors opened. Cold air rushed in first, sharp against her wet face, and then hands — several sets of them, moving fast, practiced, unbothered by grief because grief wasn't their job. They were already sliding the stretcher toward the doors before she'd even registered them stepping inside. She stumbled out after it, her legs unsteady beneath her, one hand pressed to the ambulance wall to keep from falling. That was when she saw Queen's car pull in behind t

Still outside the hospital."Do you want to keep talking, or do you want to be in that ambulance when it leaves?"Mirabella's mouth snapped shut. She looked past Queen, at Wayne's still body being lifted the last few feet into the back of the ambulance, at the paramedic already reaching for the doors to close them, and felt her chest tighten so hard it hurt to breathe. She ran the last few steps and climbed in just as the doors began to swing shut behind her.Inside the AmbulanceThe space was tight, cramped with equipment, the air thick with the smell of antiseptic and something colder underneath it that Mirabella didn't want to name. She sat pressed against the wall of the vehicle, knees nearly touching the stretcher, unable to take her eyes off Wayne's face.He looked wrong. Too still. Too pale. Nothing like the man who'd smiled at her through prison bars, who'd bitten his lip before answering her questions, who'd argued with his own mother about needing a maid like it was the most

  • Love me back to life   Chapter 22

Ocean Hospital, Minutes Later The scream still hung in the air of the ward, but Queen's face was already changing. Whatever had cracked in her a second before sealed itself back over, fast, like a wound closing before it had even finished bleeding. She didn't cry. She didn't sit down. She let go of Wayne's cold hand slowly, deliberately, and turned to Louisa with an expression that had gone completely flat — the same stillness people had learned, over the years, to be far more afraid of than any raised voice. "I'm having him discharged," she said. It wasn't a question. "Queen, he needs to stay here. He's still on life support, he's still—" "I didn't ask a question. Did I?" Louisa opened her mouth, then closed it again. She had seen this look on Queen exactly once before, years ago, at a dinner where a business partner had made the mistake of underestimating her in front of his own people. He never made that mistake twice. Whatever came next, Louisa understood there was no versio

  • Love me back to life   Chapter 21

Ocean Hospital, Hours Later Queen had been sitting at the waiting room for over three hours. She hadn't touched the water Lawrence brought her. She hadn't touched her phone, even though it buzzed twice with calls she didn't bother to check. Her guards stood a few feet away, silent, knowing better than to speak first. Lawrence paced near the nurse's station, glancing at her every few minutes like a man checking whether a bomb was still ticking. "Queen," he said finally, approaching her. "Why don't you let me get you something to eat? This could still take—" "How long does it take to tell me if my son is alive or not?" Her voice was calm. That was the part that frightened him most. "These things take time. The doctors need to—" "You've said that for three hours, Lawrence." He opened his mouth, then closed it again. There was nothing left to say that wouldn't unravel faster than he could patch it back together. Queen stood. Smoothed the front of her jacket. Looked at him with an

  • Love me back to life   chapter 20

The Cell Bathroom The attacker pressed his body against Wayne's and drove the knife into his side. He felt the blood come fast, warm against his gloved hand. He pulled the blade free without hesitation. Wayne tried to scream. Only a wet, broken sound came out, tears mixing with blood on his attacker's hand. The man didn't let go — not yet. His job wasn't to hurt Wayne. It was to finish him. He knew exactly when a person stopped fighting. He'd done this before. Wayne's body went still. His breath faded. His head fell to one side. The attacker released him and stepped back, watching the body crumple to the floor. He let out a slow breath and smiled. "Spoiled brat," he muttered, and slipped away into the dark. Minutes Later Two inmates heading to the bathroom found Wayne on the floor. Their screams brought guards running — then the correction officer, then the district police chief himself. The correction officer pulled on a glove, knelt beside the body, and pressed two fingers t

Mirabella turned back to meet her boss gaze fixed on her and for lots of reason she felt uncomfortable, she was still wondering why she had been called back until she heard him say something like a quote 'The hardest decisions of life, most times are the right decisions.'
