LOGINEssie’s eyes burned as the words tore from her throat.
“You… brought her here?” For one foolish, desperate second I had believed Leo had come for me. Instead he stood in Serena’s living room with Bella pressed against his side, and the old wound from yesterday ripped open all over again. Bella’s smile was pure poison. “You didn’t actually think he would come alone tonight, did you?” She stepped forward, a thin folder clutched in her manicured hand. Leo’s arm slid around Bella’s waist. He pulled her in, kissed her full on the mouth right there in front of me. I turned my face away, but the image was already in my head. My heart thumps. My baby…this tiny secret that I hadn’t told Leo about seemed to sense my panic and twist inside me. Serena moved like a shield, stepping between us. “You can step away now.” She said, her voice was ice. Serena ushered them toward the door, body blocking my view of the kiss that still lingered in the air. Leo ignored her completely. His gaze locked on me, dark and cold. “Essie… have you signed the divorce papers?” “I haven’t… reviewed them,” I whispered. The words scraped my throat raw. “I—” “She will review them with her lawyers,” Serena cut in sharply. I nodded, even though the lie was not needed. I can’t afford a lawyer right now. I can barely afford anything. But I nodded anyway, because pride was the only thing I had left. Bella stopped mid step. Something flickered across her face…tension, calculation. “What lawyers?” Serena’s eyes narrowed. “And what business is that of yours, little miss husband-taker?” Leo’s voice exploded through the room. “Don’t speak to her like that!” He stepped forward, jaw clenched. “You were never a good friend to her. Stop pretending…” “Leo.” I would not let him tear into Serena. Not here. Not in the only safe place I have left. “You can’t speak to her like that either.” He stared at me as if I had slapped him. His eyes flicked between me and Serena, searching for something… My hands shook as I took the folder from Bella. Bella rolled her eyes at Serena, but I barely noticed. “I will review these tonight,” I said, my voice steadier than I felt. “And I will send them back to you tomorrow morning.” Leo nodded once. Bella gaped at Serena, who stared right back, unflinching. I felt a fierce, painful pride. Serena had never backed down from anyone. “You both can leave now.” I tilted my chin toward the door. Serena stretched an arm out, opening the way but Leo remained rooted, staring at me… “Please, Leo,” I whispered. I watched as Bella’s fingers tightened around his. “Honey…” Leo’s ignored her and his voice dropped, almost gentle, almost cruel. “You shouldn’t be with her, Essie. She is not your friend.” The words landed like stones. I wanted to scream that Serena had answered every late-night call when he forbade contact. That Serena had driven through the rain the night he threw me out, no questions asked. Serena was the only person who still looked at me like I was worth something. Instead I stood silent, eyes burning, and watched the man I had loved walk out the door with another woman on his arm. The door clicked shut. Serena hissed under her breath and turned. “No. No, no, no—don’t you dare do that, Essie.” Strong arms wrapped around me before the first sob fully broke. “You cannot cry for him. He isn’t worth it.” But the tears came anyway, hot and endless. They soaked into Serena’s shoulder. My eyelashes stuck together. My whole body trembled. “Why does it hurt so much?” I choked. “It’s okay. It’s okay.” Serena’s hand stroked my hair, gentle and fierce at once. “You’re going to be fine.” I pulled back just enough to look at her. The words felt impossible. How was I supposed to be fine when I had no job, no savings, and a child growing inside me that Leo still didn’t know about? The future stretched out like a dark, empty road. Serena’s eyes softened, as if she had heard every unspoken fear. “I promise.” I sniffed hard and stepped out of her embrace. My hands felt cold without Serena’s. “I should have told him…” “Hey. Hey.” Serena caught my wrists, voice low and urgent. “Don’t you do that to yourself. This is not your fault. We will figure this out. Okay?” I nodded, because saying anything else would shatter me completely. Serena exhaled, relief flickering across her face for half a second—then her phone buzzed on the counter. Once. Twice. Then, a third time. She glanced at the screen. I watched as color drained from her face so fast I felt the shift in the air. “Serena?” My voice came out small. “What is it?” Her hand tightened around the phone. She looked up, “It’s nothing, don’t worry about it.” She smiled but those were the smiles that didn’t reach her eyes. “Hmmn..” “I promise, everything is fine,” she whispered. “It’s just someone from….from work.” “Okay…what is it about?” Serena’s throat tightened as she swallowed saliva. She opened her mouth, closed it, then forced the words out like they physically hurt. “They need me to come in first thing tomorrow. They found something on some of the papers am working on…and they want me to check it.” “Let me see…” I said grabbing the phone, but Serena’s hand smacked my hands off her phone “What?” I screamed shocked at the sudden mood of Serena. “I am sorry, Essie.. I …I didn’t mean to do that.” I stared at Serena in shock as silence settled between us.The phone rang while I was still staring at the cold eggs.Unknown number. I answered before I could stop myself.“Hello?”“Essie? This is Maxwell. I hope I’m not disturbing you.”I frowned at the wall. “Maxwell? Do I… know you?”“Not really. I’ve been trying to reach you for a while now. I just wanted to check how you are doing… and ask if you would be willing to meet. Today, if possible. Just to talk.”I took in a deep breath and there was a short silence on my end and glanced at Serena’s half-finished coffee still sitting on the counter.“Why?” I asked. “What’s this about?”I would rather explain in person. It’s nothing bad. I promise.”I hesitated, thumb pressing against the edge of the phone. Part of me wanted to hang up and the other part had been carrying that unknown number in my mind.“Fine,” I said finally. “Where?”He gave me the name of a cafe two streets over, I am not really familiar with this environment but I guess looking for this place wouldn't be too difficult. “Ok
The morning light filtered through the half-drawn curtains, soft and indifferent, as if the night before hadn’t left a bruise on everything. We sat at the small kitchen table, plates of toast and scrambled eggs between us, the coffee already cooling in our mugs. Serena pushed a piece of toast toward me with a small smile on her face.“You need to eat, Essie. Really eat. You’ve been running empty.” She reached across and squeezed my wrist. “And you need to start building again, not just surviving. Something of your own. A plan. Even if it’s small at first. I’ll help you look at options…jobs, whatever feels right. You’re not starting from nothing. You are starting from everything you’ve already survived.”I nodded, chewing slowly, the bread didn't have a taste. My mind wouldn’t stay on her words. It kept circling round divorce papers and the envelope still sitting on the counter where I had left it last night. I keep seeing Leo with that cool, final look in his eyes..the one that sai

The apartment felt smaller the moment the message left my phone. Like the walls had inhaled and forgotten how to breathe out again.Serena didn’t move. She just stared at the glowing screen in my hand as if it might still reverse itself, as if the words address now could be unsent by sheer force of will. “Essie.” Serena’s voice was low, careful, the way people speak when they’re trying not to startle someone. “You don’t have to open the door. You don’t owe him anything. Not the address. Not the baby. Not one more second of your life.”I pressed the heel of my hand against my stomach. Sincerely, the hope was still there, fluttering like something with broken wings that refused to die. I hated it how i felt but also needed it. Both feelings lived in the same tight space under my ribs and they were tearing each other apart.“I know,” I whispered. But knowing and doing were different countries, and right now I am sitting here quietly not knowing what I should do.My phone buzzed agai
The voice that came through the speaker made my knees go weak.“Essie.”Just my name. Low and rough..the farmiliarity in a way still cut deep.Leo.Serena’s eyes narrowed the second she saw my face. She mouthed, Who? but I couldn’t answer. I could barely breathe.“Leo…” The word slipped out before I could stop it.On the other end, there was a sharp exhale, like he had been holding his breath. “Where the hell are you? I’ve been calling the hospital. They said you left.”My free hand curled into a fist against my thigh. The same man who had shoved me out into the rain was now demanding answers.“I… I’m fine,” I managed. My voice sounded small even to my own ears.“Fine?” He let out a short, humorless laugh. “You were in an accident, Essie. The doctor called me. Said you were unconscious when they brought you in. And then you just… disappeared.”My stomach twisted and something about his words felt off.“You didn’t bring me to the hospital?” I asked slowly. “And left cash with me?”Ser
A sharp intake of breath cut through the line.“Essie? Oh my God, Essie! Where are you? Are you okay? You sound…”“I’m at the hospital,” I whispered, tears already streaming down my face. “Please… I need help.”Serena didn’t hesitate. “Stay right there. I’m coming to get you.”I sent her the address and Less than an hour later, her car pulled up outside the entrance. I stepped out into the light drizzle still wearing the same damp clothes from the night before. The second Serena saw me, she was out of the car and pulling me into a crushing embrace.“Essie, what happened to you?” Her voice was thick with worry.“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry,” I cried, the pain of the last few days pouring out of me without restraint.“Hey. It’s okay. Whatever it is…” She wiped my tears with her thumbs while still holding me tightly. “Where’s Leo? I will drive you home.”“No!” The word ripped out of me. My heart slammed against my ribs. “I can’t go back there.”Serena studied my face. She didn’t ask quest
