The apartment felt smaller the moment the message left my phone. Like the walls had inhaled and forgotten how to breathe out again.

Serena didn’t move.

She just stared at the glowing screen in my hand as if it might still reverse itself, as if the words address now could be unsent by sheer force of will.

“Essie.” Serena’s voice was low, careful, the way people speak when they’re trying not to startle someone.

“You don’t have to open the door. You don’t owe him anything. Not the address. Not the baby. Not one more second of your life.”

I pressed the heel of my hand against my stomach. Sincerely, the hope was still there, fluttering like something with broken wings that refused to die.

I hated it how i felt but also needed it.

Both feelings lived in the same tight space under my ribs and they were tearing each other apart.

“I know,” I whispered.

But knowing and doing were different countries, and right now I am sitting here quietly not knowing what I should do.

My phone buzzed again in my hand. A new message from an unknown number.

It read, “Hi, how are you? You left the hospital already?”

My breath caught, this message has no name. Just those two quiet questions that somehow felt heavier than Leo’s demand.

I quickly locked the screen before Serena could see it and shoved the phone into my pocket like it had burned me.

Serena crossed the room in three strides and grabbed my shoulders.

Her fingers dug in hard enough to leave marks but I know she doesn’t mean to hurt me.

“Look at me,” she said, her eyes beaming with softness.

“He already had his chance and he chose the mistress,” she said. “He chose every version of himself that didn’t include you.”

She continued, “You sending that address doesn’t make him a father. It just makes you reachable.”

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to say the doctor’s call had changed something, that maybe fear could turn into care if you gave it enough room.

But the words stuck. All that came out was a thin, broken sound.

Then the intercom buzzed.

Serena’s eyes went wide. “Don’t.”

My feet moved anyway. I walked to the door. My finger hovered over the unlock button. I could still refuse. I could still pretend the message had been a mistake.

I pressed it.

The apartment door unlocked.

Serena shoved past me and stood between me and the door, fists clenched at her sides. “Essie, please…”

A knock.

I reached around her and turned the lock.

The door swung open.

Leo stood there in a black coat, his collar turned up. His hair neatly combed as always.

His eyes found mine first..always mine—and for one disorienting second I saw the man who used to make coffee too strong and leave notes on the bathroom mirror.

His expression shifted almost immediately and something colder settled in.

I watched the way he looked at Serena.

“You shouldn’t have come here,” Serena said, voice shaking with fury.

Leo ignored her. His attention stayed on me,watching me silently.

“She told me the address,” he said quietly. “That means she wants me here.”

I opened my mouth but nothing came out.

Behind him, soft footsteps paused on the door.

A woman’s voice, low and amused, drifted through the half open door, and I remember that voice. My heart thumped loudly in my chest. Leo wouldn’t bring her here.

“Darling… you forgot the papers.”

The phone rang while I was still staring at the cold eggs.Unknown number. I answered before I could stop myself.“Hello?”“Essie? This is Maxwell. I hope I’m not disturbing you.”I frowned at the wall. “Maxwell? Do I… know you?”“Not really. I’ve been trying to reach you for a while now. I just wanted to check how you are doing… and ask if you would be willing to meet. Today, if possible. Just to talk.”I took in a deep breath and there was a short silence on my end and glanced at Serena’s half-finished coffee still sitting on the counter.“Why?” I asked. “What’s this about?”I would rather explain in person. It’s nothing bad. I promise.”I hesitated, thumb pressing against the edge of the phone. Part of me wanted to hang up and the other part had been carrying that unknown number in my mind.“Fine,” I said finally. “Where?”He gave me the name of a cafe two streets over, I am not really familiar with this environment but I guess looking for this place wouldn't be too difficult. “Ok

The morning light filtered through the half-drawn curtains, soft and indifferent, as if the night before hadn’t left a bruise on everything. We sat at the small kitchen table, plates of toast and scrambled eggs between us, the coffee already cooling in our mugs. Serena pushed a piece of toast toward me with a small smile on her face.“You need to eat, Essie. Really eat. You’ve been running empty.” She reached across and squeezed my wrist. “And you need to start building again, not just surviving. Something of your own. A plan. Even if it’s small at first. I’ll help you look at options…jobs, whatever feels right. You’re not starting from nothing. You are starting from everything you’ve already survived.”I nodded, chewing slowly, the bread didn't have a taste. My mind wouldn’t stay on her words. It kept circling round divorce papers and the envelope still sitting on the counter where I had left it last night. I keep seeing Leo with that cool, final look in his eyes..the one that sai

Essie’s eyes burned as the words tore from her throat. “You… brought her here?”For one foolish, desperate second I had believed Leo had come for me. Instead he stood in Serena’s living room with Bella pressed against his side, and the old wound from yesterday ripped open all over again.Bella’s smile was pure poison. “You didn’t actually think he would come alone tonight, did you?” She stepped forward, a thin folder clutched in her manicured hand.Leo’s arm slid around Bella’s waist. He pulled her in, kissed her full on the mouth right there in front of me. I turned my face away, but the image was already in my head. My heart thumps. My baby…this tiny secret that I hadn’t told Leo about seemed to sense my panic and twist inside me.Serena moved like a shield, stepping between us. “You can step away now.” She said, her voice was ice. Serena ushered them toward the door, body blocking my view of the kiss that still lingered in the air.Leo ignored her completely. His gaze locked

The voice that came through the speaker made my knees go weak.“Essie.”Just my name. Low and rough..the farmiliarity in a way still cut deep.Leo.Serena’s eyes narrowed the second she saw my face. She mouthed, Who? but I couldn’t answer. I could barely breathe.“Leo…” The word slipped out before I could stop it.On the other end, there was a sharp exhale, like he had been holding his breath. “Where the hell are you? I’ve been calling the hospital. They said you left.”My free hand curled into a fist against my thigh. The same man who had shoved me out into the rain was now demanding answers.“I… I’m fine,” I managed. My voice sounded small even to my own ears.“Fine?” He let out a short, humorless laugh. “You were in an accident, Essie. The doctor called me. Said you were unconscious when they brought you in. And then you just… disappeared.”My stomach twisted and something about his words felt off.“You didn’t bring me to the hospital?” I asked slowly. “And left cash with me?”Ser

A sharp intake of breath cut through the line.“Essie? Oh my God, Essie! Where are you? Are you okay? You sound…”“I’m at the hospital,” I whispered, tears already streaming down my face. “Please… I need help.”Serena didn’t hesitate. “Stay right there. I’m coming to get you.”I sent her the address and Less than an hour later, her car pulled up outside the entrance. I stepped out into the light drizzle still wearing the same damp clothes from the night before. The second Serena saw me, she was out of the car and pulling me into a crushing embrace.“Essie, what happened to you?” Her voice was thick with worry.“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry,” I cried, the pain of the last few days pouring out of me without restraint.“Hey. It’s okay. Whatever it is…” She wiped my tears with her thumbs while still holding me tightly. “Where’s Leo? I will drive you home.”“No!” The word ripped out of me. My heart slammed against my ribs. “I can’t go back there.”Serena studied my face. She didn’t ask quest
