LOGINThe morning light filtered through the half-drawn curtains, soft and indifferent, as if the night before hadn’t left a bruise on everything.
We sat at the small kitchen table, plates of toast and scrambled eggs between us, the coffee already cooling in our mugs. Serena pushed a piece of toast toward me with a small smile on her face. “You need to eat, Essie. Really eat. You’ve been running empty.” She reached across and squeezed my wrist. “And you need to start building again, not just surviving. Something of your own. A plan. Even if it’s small at first. I’ll help you look at options…jobs, whatever feels right. You’re not starting from nothing. You are starting from everything you’ve already survived.” I nodded, chewing slowly, the bread didn't have a taste. My mind wouldn’t stay on her words. It kept circling round divorce papers and the envelope still sitting on the counter where I had left it last night. I keep seeing Leo with that cool, final look in his eyes..the one that said I was never to contact him again, never to come near him, never to “complicate” things. Sign it, and walk away clean. Refuse, and… they didn't say a threat, but I had felt it settle into my ribs all the same. I still haven't decided. Every time I think of signing, something in me recoiled. Every time I think of not signing, the weight of everything I had already lost pressed harder. Serena’s phone buzzed against the wood of the table. A sharp, single beep. Her eyes flicked down, and for a second the careful warmth on her face slipped. She stood quickly, already reaching for it. “I need to take this. Just a minute.” She stepped into the bedroom, the door almost closing behind her. I heard the low murmur of her voice, too quiet to catch the words. My stomach turned as I recalled her expression Last night..the way color had drained from her face, the way her hand had locked around the phone, the way she had smacked my hands away when I tried to see. The apology afterward had been soft, but the fear in her eyes had not been. What was she hiding? I stared at my plate, my appetite gone. I have never really had a big appetite for food but I need to take care of my health for my baby. Serena returned, slipping her phone into her pocket. She sat again, but her shoulders stayed tense. She picked up her fork, pushed eggs around, then set it down. “I need to run out for a few things,” she said. “Groceries and the pharmacy, I will get you some vitamins. I won’t be long.” She was already standing as she spoke, already moving toward the door and I noticed how her hands fumbled with the keys, how she glanced once at the hallway as if expecting someone to appear. Panic, thin but unmistakable, sat under the surface of her expression. “Serena—” “I’ll be back soon. Eat. Please.” I sat there for a long minute, the toast growing cold. Standing up, I walked to the counter, and pulled the envelope toward me. My hands were steadier than I expected as I slid the papers out. Divorce petition. The usual cold ending of marriage between two persons who thought they were inlove. I flipped through the papers as tears welled up my eyes…. “What the hell is marriage for?” I hissed. My eyes fell on a clause…something about residual claims and waivers of future interest that seemed to stretch further than it should. This wordings is dense, legal, and it made my head ache. I stared at the paragraph until the letters blurred, Folding the page again, I slid everything back into the envelope, and set it aside. Later. I would deal with it later. Right now I couldn’t. Returning to the table, I forced another bite of eggs, chewing without tasting. Just then, my phone rang. An unknown number glowed on the screen. The phone rang while I was still staring at the cold eggs.Unknown number. I answered before I could stop myself.“Hello?”“Essie? This is Maxwell. I hope I’m not disturbing you.”I frowned at the wall. “Maxwell? Do I… know you?”“Not really. I’ve been trying to reach you for a while now. I just wanted to check how you are doing… and ask if you would be willing to meet. Today, if possible. Just to talk.”I took in a deep breath and there was a short silence on my end and glanced at Serena’s half-finished coffee still sitting on the counter.“Why?” I asked. “What’s this about?”I would rather explain in person. It’s nothing bad. I promise.”I hesitated, thumb pressing against the edge of the phone. Part of me wanted to hang up and the other part had been carrying that unknown number in my mind.“Fine,” I said finally. “Where?”He gave me the name of a cafe two streets over, I am not really familiar with this environment but I guess looking for this place wouldn't be too difficult. “Ok

Essie’s eyes burned as the words tore from her throat. “You… brought her here?”For one foolish, desperate second I had believed Leo had come for me. Instead he stood in Serena’s living room with Bella pressed against his side, and the old wound from yesterday ripped open all over again.Bella’s smile was pure poison. “You didn’t actually think he would come alone tonight, did you?” She stepped forward, a thin folder clutched in her manicured hand.Leo’s arm slid around Bella’s waist. He pulled her in, kissed her full on the mouth right there in front of me. I turned my face away, but the image was already in my head. My heart thumps. My baby…this tiny secret that I hadn’t told Leo about seemed to sense my panic and twist inside me.Serena moved like a shield, stepping between us. “You can step away now.” She said, her voice was ice. Serena ushered them toward the door, body blocking my view of the kiss that still lingered in the air.Leo ignored her completely. His gaze locked
The apartment felt smaller the moment the message left my phone. Like the walls had inhaled and forgotten how to breathe out again.Serena didn’t move. She just stared at the glowing screen in my hand as if it might still reverse itself, as if the words address now could be unsent by sheer force of will. “Essie.” Serena’s voice was low, careful, the way people speak when they’re trying not to startle someone. “You don’t have to open the door. You don’t owe him anything. Not the address. Not the baby. Not one more second of your life.”I pressed the heel of my hand against my stomach. Sincerely, the hope was still there, fluttering like something with broken wings that refused to die. I hated it how i felt but also needed it. Both feelings lived in the same tight space under my ribs and they were tearing each other apart.“I know,” I whispered. But knowing and doing were different countries, and right now I am sitting here quietly not knowing what I should do.My phone buzzed agai
The voice that came through the speaker made my knees go weak.“Essie.”Just my name. Low and rough..the farmiliarity in a way still cut deep.Leo.Serena’s eyes narrowed the second she saw my face. She mouthed, Who? but I couldn’t answer. I could barely breathe.“Leo…” The word slipped out before I could stop it.On the other end, there was a sharp exhale, like he had been holding his breath. “Where the hell are you? I’ve been calling the hospital. They said you left.”My free hand curled into a fist against my thigh. The same man who had shoved me out into the rain was now demanding answers.“I… I’m fine,” I managed. My voice sounded small even to my own ears.“Fine?” He let out a short, humorless laugh. “You were in an accident, Essie. The doctor called me. Said you were unconscious when they brought you in. And then you just… disappeared.”My stomach twisted and something about his words felt off.“You didn’t bring me to the hospital?” I asked slowly. “And left cash with me?”Ser
A sharp intake of breath cut through the line.“Essie? Oh my God, Essie! Where are you? Are you okay? You sound…”“I’m at the hospital,” I whispered, tears already streaming down my face. “Please… I need help.”Serena didn’t hesitate. “Stay right there. I’m coming to get you.”I sent her the address and Less than an hour later, her car pulled up outside the entrance. I stepped out into the light drizzle still wearing the same damp clothes from the night before. The second Serena saw me, she was out of the car and pulling me into a crushing embrace.“Essie, what happened to you?” Her voice was thick with worry.“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry,” I cried, the pain of the last few days pouring out of me without restraint.“Hey. It’s okay. Whatever it is…” She wiped my tears with her thumbs while still holding me tightly. “Where’s Leo? I will drive you home.”“No!” The word ripped out of me. My heart slammed against my ribs. “I can’t go back there.”Serena studied my face. She didn’t ask quest
