Clara James POV
The deadliest enemy isn’t the one standing in front of you…
It’s the one who sits at your breakfast table and smiles at you.
It didn’t take me long to realize the truth: my father’s marriage didn’t give me a new mother… it gave me an enemy.
I’m Clara James. I moved to this upscale neighborhood just a week ago. The house is huge and luxurious. I live here with my father and his venomous wife. My mother died six years ago in a car accident. My parents divorced when I was ten because of my father’s mistress, who also happened to be his personal secretary.
My life was calm and beautiful before the witch Emilia Cole stepped in and destroyed everything. Mom and I had gone on a trip when our car collided with another, and that’s how I lost her. Since then, I’ve been living with my father.
I have a brother nine years older than me, but he stayed in Sweden because he opposed my father’s marriage. My dad works in real estate and owns several big companies. I was excited for my first day at the new school.
"Clara, darling, come have your breakfast."
My dad called, and I rushed over. I leaned in and planted a soft kiss on his cheek.
"Good morning, Dad," I said as I sat beside him.
"How’s my little girl today? Good morning, sweetheart."
"I’m fine, Dad. I’m so excited. Today is my first day at the new school."
Emilia, my stepmother, interrupted sharply. "You better behave and not cause any trouble."
I rolled my eyes in annoyance. I didn’t want to argue with her or ruin my mood.
"This is none of your business, Emilia," I said, staring at her sharply.
"And how is it not my business? Do you want more problems and to lose even more money?"
All that bitch cared about was money. I started eating my pastry.
"The money you lose is your father’s money, not yours." I muttered while chewing.
"And you dare talk back to me?" Emilia glared at me. My father watched silently, too weak to shut up his snake of a wife.
"And who do you think you are, that I shouldn’t talk to you like this? You’re just a street whore my father brought home."
Dad didn’t care about our fight. He just sipped his coffee and read the newspaper in his hands.
Emilia’s eyes bulged in shock, then quickly filled with anger. She stood up and struck me violently.
"What do you mean by that!"
I rolled my eyes again.
"You know exactly what I mean."
She stood and stormed toward me, almost grabbing my hair, but my father’s shout stopped her.
"How many times have I told you not to touch my daughter!"
I froze as he threw the glass in his hand to the floor. Shards scattered everywhere.
Emilia froze in place, trembling. "I… I didn’t mean…"
She muttered fearfully, looking at the ground.
"This is the last warning, Emilia. If you put your hands on my daughter even once, I will break them."
The bitch froze in her place.
"Sit down." He ordered sharply, and she hurriedly obeyed. I quietly finished my pastry. What a wonderful way to start my day.
"I’ll go now. Take care of yourself, Dad."
He nodded. I grabbed my bag and left the house, muttering to myself as I kicked the air.
"Who does that whore think she is, telling me not to cause trouble?"
"If it weren’t for Dad, I’d have messed her up already."
I started walking toward school. It was a little far from home. As I got closer, I saw students running quickly. I looked around in confusion when one of them shoved me and ran.
"Run if you don’t want to get chased!"
The boy holding me shouted. He had blond hair. I realized what he said and started running fast toward the gate.
"Get in quickly before I close it!"
Luckily, I made it in before it closed. A group of students couldn’t get in. I looked at the boy who still held my hand, and I quickly pulled it away.
"Take it easy, little one." The boy said, holding the hand I had freed.
"You almost ripped my hand off."
I rolled my eyes. "Sorry, Mr. Tall."
A playful smile curved his lips. He extended his hand to me.
"I’m Ethan Gray."
He winked at the end.
"Clara James." I took his hand and shook it.
"Thanks for helping me."
"Anytime. Are you new here? I haven’t seen you before."
We walked toward the school entrance. Everyone stared at Ethan in awe, especially the girls. Every time his eyes landed on a girl, he winked at her.
"I moved to this neighborhood just a week ago, and today is my first day at school."
I looked at the girls… they stared at me like I was a criminal. I asked in surprise,
"Why is everyone looking at me like that?"
He smirked confidently. I met his gaze.
"Because you’re standing with the most handsome boy in school."
"Are you famous or something?"
"Of course everyone here knows me. I’m the grandson of the biggest corporate mogul."
I gasped. "Wow! So you’re spoiled by your family."
Ethan smiled playfully. "You could say that."
The bell rang, signaling the start of class. We parted ways; he went to his class, and I was led to the teachers’ lounge. The teacher guided me to my new class.
"Attention, we have a new student today."
He pointed to an empty seat at the back. I went to sit but found Ethan already there. He winked at me and said with a smile,
"I guess fate already wrote our destiny together."
I sat beside him and opened my books. I raised an eyebrow playfully.
"What a coincidence, Mr. Spoiled."
"And you think this is a coincidence?" He replied slyly.
I was about to answer but the teacher’s voice interrupted, starting the lesson.
"x² - y = 0. Do you understand?"
The teacher explained, but Ethan wouldn’t stop talking to me.
"Can you be quiet for a moment?"
"I know you like me."
I gripped my pen tightly, staring at him and whispered,
"Shut up, damn it! You’ve been jabbering like a parrot for an hour. I want to focus on the lesson."
"Clara, darling, don’t be so tense."
He grabbed my shoulders and shook me, pretending to be kind.
I threatened him, and he quickly let go.
"Do you want to die?!"
"You’re really scary." Ethan said, staring at me.
The bell rang, ending the school day. Ethan stuck to me all day, talking nonstop like he swallowed a radio. He took me on a tour around the school and showed me every corner.
I hadn’t made any friends or met anyone new besides Ethan.
Darkness had fallen. My home was half an hour away. I started walking while putting my headphones in, listening to my favorite song.
I entered an old alley that looked a little scary, but I ignored it. I pulled my headphones out.
"Damn… I’ve been walking for an hour and still haven’t arrived. Did I get lost?"
I whispered fearfully. I looked back, then ahead. I was trapped in a narrow old alley, unsure which way to go.
Clara James"Don't you have a fear of dogs?"Adrian hummed in satisfaction before starting the car. The entire neighborhood seemed to shake under the roar of the black Ferrari's engine as it cut through the streets."I got over that because of your dog."His voice came out low and deep while he drove steadily, his long fingers lightly tapping the steering wheel. I watched him for a moment before answering, studying the sharp line of his jaw and his dark eyes reflecting the lights of the road.I relaxed against the leather seat, breathing slowly as I tried to ignore his effect on me.He let out a quiet sarcastic hum."So you overcame one of your fears because of me... and I'll make you overcome all of them."Damn his tone. Every time he spoke, I felt as if something hot melted inside my stomach.I wet my lips before lifting my chin with fake confidence."Let's be more accurate... because of Bam, not because of you. At least Bam was nice to me, unlike you."A sarcastic laugh escaped him
Clara JamesI sprayed the last touch of perfume on my neck as my finishing touch, then lifted my gaze to the mirror. My cheeks... were still red from the detective's earlier touches.Oh God.I was wearing the dress Adrian had brought for me. White, with soft green flowers and leaves scattered across the fabric. It reached slightly below my knees and made me look more innocent than I actually was.I placed the lip balm inside my small bag before closing it.I had packed some clothes as Adrian asked me to... and I won't deny that my mind literally flew to Mars after his last words, but my curiosity was killing me more than my nervousness.I grabbed my bag and checked my appearance one last time before taking several deep breaths, waving my hand in front of my face as I tried to calm my blush."Calm down... it's not like he's going to sleep with you."I whispered to myself, lightly slapping my cheeks.I put on a black coat, turned around, and finally left my room."Adrian, please take me
Clara JamesI woke up at ten in the morning, sleep still clinging to my eyes as if I hadn't slept for days. A whole week had passed since that night... a week of completely avoiding my father. No talking. No looks. Not even sitting in the same place.I was relaxing in the warm bathtub, watching the steam rise around me absentmindedly while memories of what I did with Adrian attacked me without mercy.I remembered everything.Every word... every kiss... every crazy thing I did while drunk.I pretended to have forgotten all week because I was so embarrassed. As for him...He stayed by my side the whole time, taking care of me as if I were something precious he was afraid of breaking. Even that hag Emilia didn't dare say a single word while he was around. My father took my phone away, so I couldn't contact Natalie or Ethan all week. Natalie tried to come more than once, but he stopped her every time.My old maid told me that two girls had been killed inside that club... and of course, th
Clara James"Are you drinking alcohol, damn it?!"My father shouted with such anger that my whole body jolted.I froze in place.I couldn't say a word from how terrified I was. I just squeezed my trembling fingers together while my breath broke inside my chest. He came closer until his face was very close to mine, and his expression twisted further when his suspicions were confirmed."You're a child... How could you drink alcohol? Have you lost your mind?"I was going to cry again...I looked at him fearfully, but nothing in his expression changed. His anger only grew."Dad... I... didn't..."Even lying failed me.I couldn't form a single coherent sentence. He grabbed my shoulders roughly, making my body shake."I what?! Why are you acting like this? Why do you make me show you my other side? Why do you bring humiliation on yourself?!"He shook my body with every word he shouted, his voice echoing through the living room in a terrifying way.My eyes filled with tears instantly."Didn'
Clara James"Get in."Adrian ordered me in a domineering tone that made my femininity sink even deeper. When I remained standing for too long, he grabbed my wrist and placed his other hand above my head, then lowered my body slightly so I could get into the car easily.I sat in the front seat.It was unbelievably comfortable. He leaned over and fastened my seatbelt for me, a faint smile forming on his lips that threw my heart into chaos. As soon as he was done, he closed the door behind me and walked to the driver's seat.He buckled his seatbelt and drove off.I leaned back against the seat, my eyes never leaving his aura. One tattooed hand rested beside him, while the other held the steering wheel with an attractive steadiness. His eyes were on the road... but all his attention was on me.And I didn't stop talking excitedly about Gojo, about how much I loved him, and I think I even told him the entire anime story too.Adrian listened to me with strange attentiveness. Was it because h
Clara James"You will never touch me again."I shouted at Adrian with confidence, even though tears were still streaming down my face.Adrian walked toward me with calm steps, then took off his black coat and draped it over my shoulders. I immediately yanked it off and threw it to the floor."I don't need your filthy coat."I muttered, biting my lip hard as I tried to stop myself from crying.I cry easily... just like my mother. He completely ignored my words. Bending down, he picked up the coat and wrapped it around me again, this time so tightly that it nearly stole my breath."And I don't need your opinion."I tried to take it off again, but he tightened his hold on me. A gasp escaped my lips when he suddenly lifted me and tossed me over his shoulder as if I weighed nothing."Put me down right now!"I shouted angrily, pounding my fists against his back, but he smacked my backside hard enough to sting."Be quiet."I touched my backside in shock and whined in pain. That actually hurt
Clara James POV“I want both of these.”My attention shifted to the girl. I put my finger on my chin, thinking. I looked at the shelf in front of me—there were headbands with all kinds of shapes: bunny ears, bear ears, and more. My eyes landed on two headbands shaped like cat ears and mouse ears.T
Clara James POV“I missed the taste of your lips.”He murmured while sucking my lower lip. I closed my eyes and wrapped my arms around his neck, enjoying the kiss. One hand crushed my waist, the other held my neck, pulling me closer. The kiss turned wild and hungry. He did not stop at sucking my li
