LOGINDamon's POV
After Elias left, I turned to my uncle and asked,
"Uncle, what were you thinking? If you had pulled the trigger, what do you think would have happened?"
He looked at me and said,
"Don't question my actions, Damon. You know little or nothing about how a mafia family works.”
I shook my head and said,
"Maybe I don't know much, but I do know one thing. Real mafia leaders don't take the law into their own hands, even if their enemy is guilty of a crime."
Uncle Sebastian stared at me for a few seconds. Then he turned around and walked out of the hallway without saying another word.
Marco looked at me and said,
"You're right, Damon. He should not take the law into his own hands."
I sighed and replied,
"He won't understand it the way we do. Victor Vance killed his brother, and because of that, he has carried so much hate in his heart for many years.”
"I can't believe the son of Victor Vance stood right in front of him and still had the courage to defend his father," I said.
Later, I went to the gym to train with Marco. He was the best bodyguard we had, which was why he was also my personal right-hand man.
As I put on my boxing gloves and got ready to spar with him, Marco looked at me and said,
"Damon, did you see how scared Elias was when your uncle pointed the gun at him?"
I nodded.
"Yes, I did," I replied. "He looked terrified. It was like he had never even touched a gun before."
Marco nodded.
"Exactly. That's what I'm trying to say. If he was really that scared of a gun, I'm not sure he could have had anything to do with Barrister Dury's death."
I looked at Marco for a few seconds. Then I smiled and asked,
"So, are you saying you think Elias might be innocent?”
I smiled and asked Marco,
"Marco, when was the last time you drank whiskey?"
Marco laughed and joked,
"Maybe after this training session, we should have a drink together!"
I laughed and said,
"You don't even like whiskey. Why would you say that?"
Marco's smile disappeared. He looked at me seriously and said,
"I trust my instincts. I can tell when something doesn't feel right."
I nodded.
"Let's stop talking about Elias for now and focus on our training."
Marco agreed. He got into his fighting stance, and we started sparring.
For almost an hour, I couldn't land a single punch on him. He blocked and dodged every attack I made.
Finally, I sat down, breathing hard from the training.
I looked at Marco and smiled.
"Next time, I'll beat you."
Marco laughed loudly.
"Keep dreaming! Maybe after you drink some whiskey, you'll have a better chance."
I laughed and shook my head.
"That will only happen in your dreams.”
The two of us laughed as Marco got a phone call. After a few minutes, he ended the call and looked at me.
"According to the information I just got, the police are still trying to find out who killed Mr. Dury."
Marco looked serious.
"I asked some people to secretly investigate the case," he said. "They found an eyewitness who gave us new information. This person can tell us what really happened."
"Sure, Damon," Marco replied.
The next day, I was already in my office when I noticed that Marco was not present so I asked one of my guard,
“Have you seen Marco this morning “.
“Yes boss we have, he left very early because he had an urgent matter which came up this morning”.
It was unlike Marco unless this matter was too urgent.
I was on the road with my driver, but Marco was not answering my calls. Then, as I got close to the office, he finally called me back.
I could hear many police sirens in the background.
"Marco, what's going on? Why are there so many sirens?" I asked.
"Sir, the killer found out that the police were looking for him. He ran away, and now the police are chasing him," Marco replied.
"Give me the location, Marco," I said.
"Don't bother coming, Damon," Marco answered.
"Marco, give me the location right now. That's an order."
Marco stayed quiet for a moment. Then he said, "Liberty Highway, Block 3."
I ended the call and got into my car. This time, I didn't need a driver. I drove by myself as fast as I could.
When I got to the highway, I saw many police cars blocking the road. I couldn't go any farther, so I took a shortcut to catch up with the killer.
The killer's car suddenly came out from the rest of the police cars. Out of nowhere, I drove across the road and blocked his car by surprise. The killer had no choice but to stop.
I got out of my car and pointed my gun at him.
"Put your hands on your head! I promise I won't shoot!" I shouted.
The police officers also pointed their guns at him. Then the police inspector spoke through a megaphone.
"We won't shoot you. Just step out of the car and surrender."
The killer slowly stepped out of the car with a gun in his hand. Everyone became very careful. They were ready to pull the trigger if he made one wrong move.
Then the killer turned around and pointed the gun at his own head.
"Please don't do this," I pleaded. "Just tell me who sent you."
The killer looked at me with tears in his eyes and said,
"I can't tell you, Damon. If I do, he will kill everyone I love."
I looked at him and said,
"I promise we will protect them.”
"Nothing will happen to them," I said.
The killer kept his gun pointed at the man's head.
He nodded slowly.
"Sorry for betraying you, boss," the man said.
The killer pulled the trigger.
Bang!
The bullet hit the man's head, I rushed over as fast as I could. I checked his pulse, but it was too late.
He was already dead, Marco ran to me and helped me stand up. He patted me on the back.
"You did your best, boss," he said.
I handed my gun to Marco.
Then I walked toward my car.
Marco followed me while the police took control of the crime scene.
As we walked, I looked at Marco.
"The killer called me 'boss,'" I said. "That means he knows about our syndicate."
Marco nodded.
"I told you to trust my instincts," he said. "Elias is innocent in this case."
I stayed quiet for a moment.
If Elias was innocent...
Then who was the real enemy hiding in the shadow?.
"But that still doesn't change the fact that Elias helped pay for my father's death," I said.
Marco looked at me for a moment.
"Let's go home, boss," he said. "You've been through a lot today. You need some rest."
I let out a deep sigh.
"You're right," I replied.
We got into the car. As we drove away, I looked out the window. Too many questions were still waiting for answers.
I knew I wouldn't stop until I found the truth.
Chapter 17Damon's POVI got an invitation from the state police inviting me to the funeral service of Detective Adrian Cross. He had died in a terrible traffic accident, and even though I had not known him for a very long time, his death affected me deeply. There were still so many questions I wanted to ask him, especially about my father's murder case. Detective Cross had been one of the people connected to the case, and I had hoped that one day he would tell me everything he knew. Now that he was dead, I felt as if some of my answers had been buried with him.I sat quietly in my office, staring at the invitation in my hands. My mind was filled with different thoughts when Uncle Sebastian walked into the room.He looked at me for a moment before speaking.“Damon, did you get an invitation to Detective Adrian's funeral?”I nodded.“Yes, Uncle. I did.”He sighed and sat down.“I don't think I should attend,” he said. “After everything that happened, especially after I was removed from
Elias PovMy phone suddenly rang while I was sitting quietly. I looked at the screen and saw that it was Mrs. Holloway calling. For a moment, I wondered why she was calling me. I had not been going to work for the past few days, so I already knew she might be worried about me.I picked up the phone and answered.“Hello, Mrs. Holloway.”“Hey, Elias. How are you?” she asked.“I’m fine, ma’am,” I replied, even though I knew I was not completely fine. There was a short silence before she spoke again.“If you are fine, then why haven’t you been coming to work for the past few days?”I knew I could not avoid the question forever, so I decided to tell her a little of the truth.“I’m not feeling very well. That’s why I have been on treatment for the past few days.”“Oh, I’m sorry about that, Elias,” she said. Her voice immediately became softer. “Maybe I should come and visit you after work. While I’m coming, I can make some muffins for you.”A small smile appeared on my face.“Thank you
Damon POV I was sitting quietly in my office, staring at the papers scattered across my desk. I had been trying to concentrate on my work, but my mind was somewhere else. After everything that had happened, focusing on anything felt almost impossible. The room was quiet, except for the soft ticking of the clock on the wall. I leaned back in my chair and let out a tired breath.I knew my uncle was angry.I didn't need anyone to tell me.The moment the door opened and he walked into the room, I could already see the disappointment on his face. His eyes were fixed on me, and his expression was serious. He slowly walked toward my desk.“Uncle, I can explain,” I said before he could even speak. He stopped in front of me and crossed his arms.“Explain what, Damon?” he asked. “Explain why you thought it was a good idea to put your life at such a great risk?”I stayed quiet. He continued.“What if those people were still inside the building when that bomb went off? What were you think
Elias's POVDetective Ortega texted me the location of the place where we were supposed to meet. I quickly put on my shoes and grabbed my jacket. Before leaving the house, I checked the address one more time.I wanted to make sure I was going to the right place. When I arrived, I saw Ortega sitting alone at a small restaurant. He was drinking something and looking around the room.I walked over to him."Are you ready?" I asked. He finished his drink and stood up."Yes. Let's go."We both got into his car. Ortega started the engine and drove toward the street shown on the map.The road became quieter as we went farther from the busy part of town. After a while, we reached the street. But something was not right. The place was supposed to have a building where we could find answers. Instead, we saw an old, abandoned building standing by itself. The windows were broken, and the walls looked dirty and damaged.I looked at Ortega."Are you sure this is the right place?"He checked the addr
Elias's POVI asked for permission to leave the auction house early. I told everyone I wanted to rest, but that wasn't the real reason. The truth was, I needed some time alone. So many things had happened, and my mind was full of questions. When I got home, I sat quietly in my living room. The house felt empty and silent.Knock! Knock! Knock!Someone was at my door.I frowned."I wasn't expecting anyone," I said to myself.I didn't have many friends, and no one usually came to visit me. The knocking continued, louder this time.I stood up slowly but didn't open the door right away."What if it's someone dangerous?" I wondered.I looked around the room and saw my father's old baseball bat leaning against the wall. I picked it up, just in case I needed to protect myself.Holding the bat tightly, I walked to the door."Who is it?" I called.A calm voice answered."It's Detective Ortega from the State Police.I froze for a second. What does a detective want with me? I thought. Could this
Damon's POVI was in my office having a meeting with some mafia leaders. We were talking about our next plans when I heard a knock on the door."Come in," I said. The door opened, and it was Marco.Since our meeting was already over, I told the mafia leaders they could leave. They laughed, said goodbye, and walked out of my office.Soon, only Marco, my uncle Sebastian, and I were left.Marco walked over to my uncle and handed him a file.My uncle opened it and looked through the papers. They were about someone we all knew.Marco looked at him and asked, "Do you remember him?"My uncle nodded."Yes," he said. "I remember Detective Adrian. He was the detective in charge of Lorenzo's murder case. But after some time, I gave the case to another detective because Adrian could not solve it."I held out my hand."Let me see the file," I said.My uncle gave it to me.I opened the file and started reading every page carefully. As I looked through the papers, I wanted to know why Marco had brou
