Zena's POV
I blinked profusely as I struggled to keep my sleepy eyes open, the incessant blare of my alarm piercing through the haze of morning drowsiness. With a heavy groan, I reached out, blindly searching for my phone in the dim light of dawn, desperate to silence the relentless noise that shattered the tranquillity of my room.
"Zena!" The sharp call of my name jolted me upright, a surge of adrenaline coursing through my veins as I scanned the room for signs of danger. Yet, all I found was Kelly, my ever-energetic roommate, standing in the doorway with a mischievous grin plastered across her face.
"What's wrong? Is everything okay?" I asked, my voice tinged with concern as I searched her expression for any hint of distress.
Kelly chuckled, her amusement evident as she leaned against the door frame with casual disregard. "Oh, nothing's wrong. I just love seeing you like this," she replied, her tone laced with playful teasing.
Relief flooded through me as I realized there was no imminent threat, only Kelly's usual antics. Rolling my eyes, I flopped back onto the bed, the remnants of adrenaline slowly dissipating as I succumbed to the pull of exhaustion.
"Not today, Satan," I muttered under my breath, my words muffled by the soft fabric of my pillow as I closed my eyes in a futile attempt to block out the world.
But even in the darkness behind my eyelids, I could still hear the insistent beep of my alarm, a relentless reminder of the responsibilities awaiting me beyond the comfort of my bed. With a resigned sigh, I pushed myself upright once more, determined to face the day head-on, no matter how much I longed for just a few more moments of peace.
"Don't you think it's time to get up?" Kelly's voice cut through the silence, her tone tinged with exasperation as she eyed me with a mixture of amusement and annoyance.
I groaned in response, the weight of fatigue pressing down on me like a leaden blanket. "I'm the police chief now, don't I deserve a bit of extra shut-eye?" I grumbled, rubbing my eyes wearily as I attempted to stave off the encroaching exhaustion.
Kelly arched an eyebrow, her expression a playful blend of scepticism and amusement. "Just because you're Chief now doesn't mean you can afford to be late for work," she retorted, her tone laced with gentle reproach.
I knew she was right, of course. As much as I hated to admit it, my new position came with a heightened sense of responsibility, one that left little room for indulgence or procrastination. With a resigned sigh, I pushed myself out of bed, steeling myself for the day ahead.
"Fine, you win," I conceded defeat, shooting Kelly a half-hearted glare as I dragged myself towards the bathroom.
"Of course, I'm always right," Kelly quipped, a smug grin playing across her lips as she followed me out of the room.
Despite her teasing demeanour, I knew Kelly had my best interests at heart. Ever since I'd moved here six years ago, she'd been my closest friend and confidante, a constant source of support and companionship in a city that often felt overwhelming and lonely.
As I stepped into the shower, the warm water cascading over my skin, I couldn't help but reflect on the journey that had brought me here. Leaving my sister behind had been one of the hardest decisions of my life, yet somehow, I'd managed to carve out a place for myself in this unfamiliar city, thanks in no small part to Kelly's unwavering friendship.
By the time I emerged from the bathroom, I got dressed, Kelly had already laid out breakfast on the kitchen table, a small but thoughtful gesture that warmed my heart.
"Thanks, Kel," I murmured, sinking into a chair with a grateful sigh as I reached for a steaming cup of coffee.
Kelly waved off my thanks with a dismissive flick of her wrist. "Don't mention it. Now eat up, you've got a big day ahead of you," she replied, her voice laced with genuine concern.
I nodded in agreement, the weight of responsibility settling on my shoulders again. As I shovelled food into my mouth with uncharacteristic haste, I couldn't help but wonder what the day would bring.
After hastily finishing my breakfast, I grabbed my bag and headed towards the door, Kelly trailing behind me with a playful smirk on her lips.
"Aren't you going to work?" I asked, puzzled by her lack of urgency.
"Nah, not feeling it today. Plus, my dad won't even notice I'm gone," Kelly replied casually, a hint of bitterness creeping into her voice.
I hesitated, torn between the desire to linger and the knowledge that I couldn't afford to be late. "You sure you don't want to go in today? It might do you good," I suggested, hoping to persuade her otherwise.
Kelly shrugged, a wistful smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Maybe next time. Now go on, before you're late," she urged, giving me a gentle push towards the door.
With a final glance over my shoulder, I reluctantly stepped out into the hallway, the weight of Kelly's unspoken worries lingering in the air long after I'd gone.
As I made my way to the station, my thoughts turned to Noah, my boyfriend. With a glance at my phone, I dialled his number, eager to hear his voice and share the details of my morning.
"Hey, sweetheart," I greeted him as he picked up, a surge of warmth flooding through me at the sound of his familiar voice.
"Hey, I was just about to call you. Missed you. How was your night?" Noah asked, his concern palpable even through the static of the phone line.
"Slept like a baby, perks of being the boss," I replied with a chuckle.
"You earned it, babe. You've worked hard for this," Noah reassured me, his words a soothing balm to my frayed nerves.
Before long, Noah suggested we celebrate with dinner, an idea I eagerly accepted. As we made plans, I couldn't help but feel a surge of gratitude for the life I'd built here, surrounded by people who cared for me and supported me unconditionally.
"It's been six years since I moved here," I reflected, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips. "And despite the challenges, I wouldn't change a thing."
As I ended the call with Noah and pulled into the station's parking lot, a sense of contentment washed over me. Despite the inevitable challenges that lay ahead, I knew that with Kelly and Noah's unwavering support, I could face whatever the day threw at me. As I stepped out of the car and headed towards the bustling precinct, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for the adventures that awaited me.
Zena's POV "Good morning, Chief. Here's your morning coffee," Ceila, one of the detectives, greeted me as she handed me a cup of coffee. "Thank you, Ceila. I've already had coffee, but there's no such thing as too much," I replied with a smile, taking the cup from her before making my way into my office. Ceila handed me my itinerary, and just as she was about to leave, I stopped her. "Ceila, is this right? Do I truly have a meeting with the mayor by 1 PM?" I inquired, studying the schedule in front of me. "Yes, you do. And by 3 PM, you also have a meeting here with the team. It's all written there," Ceila confirmed, gesturing towards the document in my hand. "Do you know what the meeting with the mayor is all about?" I asked, curiosity piqued. "I don't know, but I'm sure it's nothing serious," Ceila reassured me with a smile. "Thank you, Ceila. You can go back to work now," I dismissed her, signalling for her to leave. As Ceila exited my office, I settled into my chair and beg
Zena's POV I nervously fidgeted with my fingers, unsure of what to say to the mayor. "Zena, I'm waiting for an answer," he urged, his tone expectant. "Zena, are you okay? Is there a problem?" he inquired, concern evident in his voice. I shook my head, mustering as much confidence as I could. "Philip, there is no problem. I assure you that we are handling the case the best way we possibly can at the station," I replied. "Zena, are you sure? Because I don't want anything to tarnish the good name of my administration," the Mayor pressed. "I am sure, and I want you to be rest assured that we will handle it, that I will handle it," I answered firmly, hoping to allay his concerns. But it seemed the Mayor remained unconvinced. "Tell me, do you have any leads on who is responsible for all these kidnappings?" he asked, his gaze intense. "We have a lead, but you know very well that I cannot disclose our findings to you. Rest assured, my team is on it," I replied, choosing my words carefu
Zena's POV My heart pounded against my chest, its rhythm chaotic as I struggled to compose myself. Kelly's expectant gaze, Noah's nervous expression, and the glint of the ring in his trembling hand—every detail seemed magnified, overwhelming my senses. I tore my gaze away from Kelly's probing eyes, shifting it to Noah and then to the ring. Words danced tantalizingly on the tip of my tongue, but they refused to form coherent sentences. Noah's anxious face silently implored me to break the tense silence enveloping us. I desperately wanted to respond, to articulate the tumult of emotions raging within me, but my voice remained stubbornly trapped in my throat. I reached for the glass of wine before me, seeking solace in its familiar warmth. With a swift motion, I drained its contents in a single gulp, hoping to drown the uncertainty clawing at my insides. "Zena, for goodness' sake, say something! Don't leave my brother hanging like this," Kelly's voice pierced through the thick veil o
Zena's POV Emotions churned within me as I stood before the captured right hand of El Fuego. The sight of Mr. Lopez stirred a whirlwind of conflicting feelings, a potent concoction of relief, anticipation, and a lingering sense of apprehension. It was a victory, undeniably, to have him in our custody, yet beneath the surface lay the sobering recognition that our journey was far from over. Happiness teased at the edges of my consciousness, an unattainable shade, overshadowed by the harsh reality that success in our line of work was often fleeting, a mere respite in the ceaseless battle against crime and corruption. Ceila's inquiry pierced through the heavy atmosphere of the interrogation room, her voice a stark contrast to the silence that enveloped us. "Boss, what's the plan? How do we extract information from him now?" "It's late. Let him spend the night in holding. Tomorrow, we'll have a little chat with Mr. López here," I replied, my tone betraying none of the turmoil swirling wi
Zena's POVI was livid, my inside felt like I was in a sauna, I was burning and trust me. I tried to be civil with him, but it was true when they said that you could not bargain with a criminal.'' Answer me, Goddadmit,'' I yelled as I punched him again, but he only smirked as if he was enjoying seeing me fall apart.'' I am impressed, you do not hit like a lady,'' Manuel said and his eyes glittered with amusement. The look in his eyes disgusted me, and I didn't know when I started hitting him nonstop.'' You want it the hard way, I am going to make sure you experience it just the way you want it,'' I yelled, hitting me nonstop.I was blinded by rage that I couldn't think nor feel, it felt like the devil had its hold on me, and no matter how I tried to break free from the rage that held me bonded, I just couldn't. I have never felt like this in a long time. The last time I felt this kind of rage was towards Keith, and I never thought that I was going to feel like that again.'' Chief,
Zena's POVI looked at Ceila stunned. I couldn't believe that she was the one encouraging this.'' Ceila. Are you saying that we give into the demands of a criminal,'' I asked.'' Chief, it is the only way. We have to give something to get something,'' Ceila answered.'' He is a criminal, his demands should not be considered,'' I yelled.'' He will not talk unless he is assured that his son is safe,'' Ceila insisted as she tried to convince me.'' Yes, about that. Why didn't you tell me about the trail you placed on his son?'' I asked.'' I don't have a trail on his son,'' Ceila answered and I was confused.'' What are you saying, you said in there that you did?'' I asked.'' Come on Zena, you are a cop as well. I am surprised that you didn't know I was bluffing. I needed him to talk and making him think that his son could be arrested was the only way,'' Ceila explained.'' What is wrong with me? Why didn't I see that you were bluffing? How did you find out about his son?'' I let out
Zena's POVI walked into my office, and as I sank deep into my chair, my mind raced so much that even though I tried to silence the voices in my head, it wouldn't stop. But I will not allow any of that to bother me now. I have gotten the only lead to catch El Feugo, the one I have been looking for, all these years. This was my time to catch and put an end to him once and for all.'' Boss, what are your thoughts on this? Are we going to shut down that auction?'' Ceila asked and I looked at her with confusion.'' What else are we supposed to do? This is what we wanted, isn't it?'' I asked.'' Yes I know that, but what is our plan? We have gotten the information that we need, so what next?'' Ceila asked me instead of answering my question.'' Ceila, we are going to that auction, and we are going to arrest everyone that we see there, and that includes El Feugo, we have to catch him,'' I answered.'' Okay, but don't you think it will be more complicated than that? You can not go arresting
Zena's POVWalking into my apartment, I was met with the smiling face of my fiance, Noah.I was shocked that he was there. He didn't tell me that he was coming over.'' Hi baby,'' I muttered as Noah walked up to me, hugging me.'' Hi you, I missed you,'' he whispered as he placed a kiss on my lips.'' Why are you here? You didn't tell me that you were coming?'' I asked and Noah's face fell into a frown.'' Am I not allowed to visit my soon-to-be wife?'' Noah asked and I nodded.'' Of course, you can. I am just surprised,'' I answered as I put down my bag and walked over to the fridge pouring myself a glass of juice.'' Where is Kelly? Is she not home,'' I asked as I sipped my drink.'' She is in the showers, she will soon be out,'' Noah answered and I nodded as he urged me to take a seat beside me.'' You know I can not wait for you to be my wife,'' Noah whispered into my ears and his words sent shivers down my spine, as I still couldn't wrap my head around the fact that I would soon
