Debts Unspoken

I found my father In his study that evening, going over ledgers by lamplight with the kind of stillness he had when he wanted to be left alone. I closed the door behind me anyway.

"Tell me about the debt," I said.

He didn't look up. "Selene."

"You said there was a debt to my mother's line. You said this marriage would settle it. I want to know what it is."

"It isn't your concern."

"My entire future was supposed to pay for it." I crossed the room and put both hands flat on the desk, forcing him to look at me or look ridiculous avoiding it. "I think that's what makes it exactly my concern."

He set down his pen. For a long moment he just looked at me, and I watched him do what he always did, weighed what he owed me against what he was afraid of, and lose to fear every time.

"Your mother's line carries an old obligation," he said finally, choosing each word like it cost him something. "Older than the moon pact. I don't fully understand it myself. I only knew the men who came before me where bound to honor it, and when your mother disappeared, the terms of it became unstable."

"Unstable how?"

"I don't know, Selene." His voice cracked on my name, and for a second he looked older than I'd ever seen him, older than grief should make a man who wasn't fifty yet. "I've spent eleven years trying to understand what happened to her and I have nothing. A pact I can't read. A debt I don't know how to pay. And now a marriage that was supposed to buy us time, gone, because you decided one morning that you knew better."

"Maybe I do."

"You're nineteen."

"Then treat me like it matters that I am," I said. "If I'm too young to see proof, I'm too young to be handed a marriage that pays for it."

"That isn't how debt of this kind work."

"Then how do they work? You keep telling me what I can't understand instead of letting me try."

His hand flattened on the desk, and for a moment I thought he might actually give me something, some scrap of the truth he'd been carrying alone for eleven years. Instead be exhaled, long and slow, like a man setting down a weight only to pick it up right back again.

"You mother used to ask me a question like that," he said quietly. "The same tone. The same refusal to let a closed door stay closed."

"What happened to her?"

"I don't know." His voice cracked, just slightly, just enough that I heard the eleven years of not knowing underneath it. "That's the truth, Selene, whether you believe me or not. One night she was here, and the next morning she wasn't, and every dooor I have tried to open since has led nowhere. I am protecting you from my own failure to find it."

I am twenty-four, I wanted to scream at him. I have died trying to be the daughter you wanted and the wife Kai's father wanted and it got me a knife in the ribs from my own sister. I am done being nineteen in the way you see it.

"I need to see it," I said instead. "Whatever proof you have. The contract, the correspondence, anything."

"No."

"Father."

"I said no, Selene." He stood, and for a moment the fear in his face hardened into something close to command, the Alpha instead of the man. "This conversation is finished."

I left his study because there was nothing else to say that he'd listen to, but I didn't go to bed. I sat at my window instead, watching the last of the household lamps go dark one by one, counting them the way I used to count the hours of council meetings I wasn't invited to. Somewhere in that counting, the girl who would cry herself to sleep over a stolen future gave way to the woman who had already lost one, and there wasn't much difference in age between them anymore, only in what they were willing to do about it.

I waited three hours, until the household had gone quiet and the only sound in the corridor was my own pulse, and then I went back.

The corridor outside his study was dark enough that I had to feel my way along the wall, and twice I froze at the sounds of footsteps that turned out to be nothing, a servant backing the kitchen fire, a hound shifting in it's sleep by the hearth. My heart hadn't beaten this hard in years, not since the last time I'd crept through a hallway I wasn't supposed to be in, searching for a truth someone had decided I didn't deserve.

His study door wasn't locked. It had never been, not against family, not in a house that had never had reason to expect his own daughter to become a thief In the dark. I lit no candle. I didn't need one. I remembered this room from twenty-four years of living in this house across two lifetimes, remembered exactly were he kept things he didn't want found.

The false bottom in the second desk drawer took less time to find than I expected. Underneath it was a ledger, old enough that the leather had gone soft and cracked at spine, and i lifted it free just as footsteps sounded in the corridor outside, unhurried, coming closer.

I went still, the ledger pressed to my chest, and counted my own heartbeat against the rhythm of the stairs. They slowed near the door. I could see the faint shift of lamplight under the gap, someone pausing there long enough I was certain, for one terrible second, that I'd been caught before I'd even started. Then the light moved on, and the footsteps faded toward the east wing, and i let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

I didn't trust the desk anymore after that. I sat on the floor with my back against it instead, low enough that anyone glancing through the door's gap wouldn't see more than shadow, and opened the ledger by the thin moonlight coming through the window, because I wasn't willing to risk a candle giving me away.

Most of it was exactly what it looked like, records of trade and pack obligations going back generations, names and dates In careful handwriting that had gotten shakier toward the more recent pages. I almost gave up twice, my eyes burning with the effort of reading in bad light, before I found the entry that made my hands go cold.

A single line, dated eleven years and three months ago, in handwriting that wasn't my father's.

"The pact holds only so long as the bloodline remains unclaimed. She has been reclaimed. The debt stands performed until settled in kind."

~ Vesper Kane.

I had never heard the name in my life. Not in this one, not in the one before. I sat there in the open with the ledger open on my lap and read the date again, certain i was wrong, hoping I was wrong.

I wasn't. The entry was dated the same week my mother disappeared.

I read it three more times, as if repetition might change the words into something less final. It didn't. I sat there in the dark with my father's secret open on my lap and understood, with a clarity that felt almost physical, that I had just stepped past a door he had spent eleven years trying to keep closed. There was no walking back through it now.

I copied the entry onto a scrap of parchment by memory alone, careful to match the handwriting as closely as I could In case I ever needed to prove I hadn't invented it, then I returned the ledger to its hiding place exactly as I'd found it, corners aligned, dust undisturbed as best I could manage. My father could not know that I'd been here. Not yet. Not until I understood enough to survive whatever conversation that would come after.

I left the way I'd entered it, quiet as a held breath, and did not sleep at all that night. I lay awake instead with one name repeating itself behind my eyes, a name that belonged to no one I'd ever met in either lifetime, and yet somehow already felt like the answer to every question I hadn't known how to ask.

Kai's beta arrived eight days later, unannounced, which I was beginning to suspect was simply how Nightfang did everything. "You're smaller than I expected," he said, by way of introduction, swinging down from his horse in the Voss courtyard like he owned the ground he landed on. "Kai talks about you like you're some kind of immovable object. I was picturing someone taller.""I'm sorry to disappoint""You haven't yet. Give it time." He looked me over once, quick and assessing, the way I imagined he looked at everything, sorting threats from nuisances from things worth his attention. "Rylan Blackwood. Kai's beta, in case that wasn't obvious from the impressive amount of Nightfang grey I'm wearing.""Selene Voss. In case that also wasn't obvious.""Oh, it was obvious. You're the one who said no to my Alpha's son in front of half the Council." Something that have been approval flickered across his face before he tucked it away. "I've been dying to meet the woman with the nerve enough to

I found Petra in the lining room past midnight, folding sheets that didn't need folding, the way people do when their hands need somewhere to put the things their mouth won't say."You should be asleep," I said. "So should you." She didn't look up, but her shoulders eased slightly, like she'd been hoping for company without wanting to ask for it. "I heard the shouting from the east corridor. Half the house probably did.""Then you know it wasn't my finest hour.""I know your sister's been carrying something heavy long before tonight." She set down a sheet, finally meeting my eyes. "That's not really my place to say.""Say it anyway. I could use someone who isn't managing me for once."That got a small, surprised laugh out of her, and she sank onto the bench beside the linen shelves, patting the space next to her until I sat too. It felt strange, sitting there as an equal instead of someone being dressed or tendered to, and stranger how much I'd missed it without knowing I did. "Can

"How did you know?"That question sat between us longer than it should have, my father's eyes fixed on me with a weight I hadn't felt from him since the morning I refused the proposal. I had maybe three seconds to decide what kind of daughter I was going to be for the rest of this conversation, and none of the options were good. "I've been having dreams," I said. It wasn't a lie. It also wasn't close enough to the truth to be dangerous, which was the only reason I let myself say it. "Dreams." He repeated the words like he was testing its weight. "Since when?""Since before the proposal was announced. I didn't think much of them at first." I kept my voice even, the way I'd learned to keep it even across two lifetimes of saying things I needed people to believe. "They're not clear. Fragments, mostly. A feeling more than a vision. I saw riders coming from the east and didn't think about it again until the watch found tracks in exactly that direction.""That's not a small thing to keep

  • Luna Reborn: I Refused My Fated Alpha    Drama At The War Council

Five days after Kai rode out of Voss territory, my father called a war council, and I invited myself. "This isn't a place for you," he said, when I appeared in the doorway of the map room, already dressed as someone who intended to stay. "I've been studying border laws since twelve," I replied. "You used to be proud of that.""I'm still proud of it. I'm also aware that pride doesn't earn you a seat at a war council.""Then let me sit somewhere that isn't a seat.""Selene." He rubbed his hand over his face, it was obvious that he was exhausted. My guess was that he had already lost one argument with me this month and didn't want to argue again, so as not to lose a second time. "This isn't a game. Men will be making decisions in this room that could cost lives."I understand that better than you think.""Do you." It wasn't really a question. He studied me for a moment, some of the fear I'd noticed since my refusal flickering behind his eyes again, quickly suppressed. "You've been dif

She kept her tone light, curious, the tone of a sister making conversation and nothing more, her eyes lingered on my face a beat too long, waiting for something I wasn't offering. "Or Is that a secret too?""There's no secret. I didn't want the marriage.""No one ever wants the marriage," she said. "That's never stopped anyone before.""Maybe I'm not anyone."She studied me a moment longer, and I watched her decide, visibly, not to push further, folding whatever she actually wanted to say back down into something smaller and safer. "Enjoy your scrolls," she said instead, peeling off toward t
