Reign:

Nervously, I watched as she picked at her nails. I watched those bright green eyes dart from window to window. Her body language had changed completely, from slack as she thought to panic now, as she fought the urge to pace along the floors, as she seemed to have connected the dots on something I hadn’t yet put together.

“Tell me what you’re seeing that I’m not, my lonan.”

“It could be nothing,” she waved me off, almost absently as she turned again to the windows, to the lights of Solari

Odessa:I stood before our bedchamber door. My eyes had roamed over the pattern in the wood, the knots, the color… I had even taken in the intricate pattern on the brass doorknob, and still, I could not make my hand reach for the damn thing to turn it.Just as I was ready to stomp away and go to the kitchen for wine, the door opened slowly, and my eyes began to sting. Inside, Reign stood before the crackling hearth, and despite the distance between us, his eyes bore into mine. Something like relief flooded through the bond as I stepped forward. It was as if both of us had been waiting for this moment, waiting to be together again as we wrapped around one another in a hug I would likely never forget. “I love you,” I barely managed to speak. My voice was hoarse still, but being in his arms, being this close to him, wrapped in his warmth, his strength. I knew at this moment that no matter what, he loved me too; he supported me in all of the insanity I had brought into his life. “I lov

Odessa:"It was attached to you." For a moment, I couldn't hear anything, not the crackling fire, nor the wind whispering against the windows. Those five words seemed to hang in the air between us, suspended in a silence so thick that I could practically feel it pressing against my skin.It was… attached… to me.I stared at Zander, waiting for him to laugh, to tell me he'd made some terrible mistake, that the magic he'd seen was something entirely different from what he believed it to be. But he didn't laugh; he didn't even blink; he simply stood there, looking at me with an expression that made my stomach turn.I watched his expression for a moment, just long enough to see the feelings painted there… it was fear written on his face. Zander was afraid, but was it fear of the thread, or of me?"No." The word escaped my lips before I could stop it. Zander took another step toward me, and I took one back. If this warrior was fearful of me… shouldn’t I be scared of me too?"Odessa, I nee

Odessa:I wasn't entirely sure how much longer I could sit at that damned table and pretend everything was alright.Alaric was still talking, Zander was still pretending to be interested in whatever story he'd begun telling, and Reign was still holding my hand beneath the table, his thumb brushing across my knuckles every few moments as though he could somehow keep me grounded with that simple touch, and Goddess, perhaps he could. Because without him, I was certain I would have already dragged Zander into the hallway and told him everything. The light. The glamour. That fucking thread.I took another sip of wine, trying to calm the nerves that seemed determined to unravel themselves inside my chest."Little star?" I blinked, turning toward Alaric."Yes?" He smiled."I asked whether you remembered old Master Bellamy." Goddess... Master Bellamy, I hadn't heard that name in years."The man who used to chase me out of the kitchens?" Alaric laughed."The very same.""Of course I remember h

Odessa:“I am.” Those two words seemed to change him from that sarcastic man he had become since our arrival to Solaris, back into the warrior who escorted me from Evander to the kingdom I was now determined to save.“Do you plan to tell him?” I knew that would be his first question based on that change of persona. “I don’t,” I answered quickly, watching as his shoulders sagged with relief. “That raises so many concerns, Odessa.” He began to pace in his usual fashion, the one that told me those gears in his mind were spinning a mile a minute. "Entering someone's mind without their knowledge is not something we should take lightly." His pacing continued even as I agreed, even as I told him I understood."I know the risks, Zander." Even as the words left my mouth, I knew he wouldn’t truly process them despite giving a reply to them."Then perhaps we should—" I shook my head, knowing exactly where this conversation was about to lead. “Stop.” My tone was like a whip against his skin.

Odessa:The water had long since lost its warmth, but I couldn't bring myself to get out. I sat submerged to my shoulders, staring at the ceiling while the faint scent of lavender and vanilla bean drifted from the bathwater. Somewhere beyond the enormous windows, the sun had begun its descent behind the mountains of Solaris, casting long shadows across the marble floors… It was beautiful. Everything about this kingdom was beautiful, and yet, all I could think about was Evander. My father. The throne Calista was trying to steal. The people who had once looked to me as their future queen, who now believed I was lying dead somewhere beyond their border. I sighed, sinking a little deeper into the water."You're going to drown yourself if you keep doing that, little queen." Isla… I closed my eyes as I pictured those feelings of inadequacy and ignorance being boxed in a starless corner that couldn’t reach our bond. I didn’t want her or Reign to feel it, to feel how terrible my own ignorance

Reign:"I'm not fucking dead." Of all the things I had expected my mate to say, that certainly hadn't been one of them.I stared down at her, watching as that wicked little smile spread across her lips, and for a moment, I couldn't decide whether I wanted to kiss her or throw her over my shoulder and carry her somewhere far away from the dangers she was so eagerly preparing to run headfirst into.Perhaps I wanted to do both, because there she stood, my beautiful, infuriating mate, with her chin raised and those eyes burning with a determination I had come to recognize all too well. She wasn't asking for my permission to return to Evander. Hell, I doubted she'd even considered the possibility that I might refuse her.Odessa had made up her mind, and judging by the way she was looking at me, she was fully prepared to fight anyone who dared stand between her and the kingdom she'd once called home… Including me… Goddess help me, I loved that woman."Well," Zander muttered from somewhere b
