CHAPTER 3

It didn’t take long for the Alpha to arrange housing and furniture and everything that we needed since we were technically refugees. And he had me enrolled in school immediately and he also went to see my mother. He had to make sure that she really was a doctor and what I had told him was the truth. Apparently, Alpha Kane was no idiot when it came to Alpha Calvin. He knew about his many mates and he didn’t blame us for wanting to get me out of there.

So on my first day of school I stopped at a diner to get some breakfast while my mother rested at home before she started work. Luckily, after seeking medical help she was healing really fast and wanted to start work as soon as possible.

But as I sat at the counter in the diner with a coffee and a book, I heard the bell chime as someone else walked in and sat at the counter, a couple of stools down from me.

“Hi Asher. The usual?” The waitress asked.

“Yes, please.” Asher said.

I didn’t look up from my book while he was sitting there waiting for his food, but when he started clearing his throat I did and he was staring straight at me.

“New in town?” He asked.

“Gee, what gave me away?” I asked.

“I’ve never seen you here before and it looks like you’re going to the high school.” He said, looking at my backpack on the floor next to me.

“Very observant.” I said, sarcastically.

“I’m Asher.” He said.

“Savannah.” I said.

“We weren’t told that there were any new students coming to the pack. When did you arrive?”

“Two days ago. And why does it need to announced to the whole pack when there are new people here? We’ve already been initiated by the Alpha.” I said.

“I don’t doubt that. Otherwise you wouldn’t be sitting here so calmly. It’s just strange. This sort of stuff isn’t usually kept as a secret.” He said.

“Well, you’ll have to take that up with the Alpha.” I said. The waitress brought Asher’s food out and placed it in front of him.

“What are you reading?” He asked. So I showed him the cover of the book and he almost choked on his food. “Are you serious? ‘Interview with a Vampire’?” He asked.

“What? It’s a good book. And an even better movie.” I said.

“Why? Because of Brad Pitt?” He asked.

“Duh.” I said, rolling my eyes and he chuckled.

“You’ve got a bit of spunk in you, don’t you?”

“How could you tell?” I asked.

“Instinct. And I’ve been taught how to read people.” He said. But I just glanced over at him before I went back to reading my book.

When I left the diner Asher got up and started walking with me. Since we were going to the same place, I didn’t argue with him about it.

As soon as we got to the high school, a lot of people were looking my way as I walked into the building with Asher but he just ignored all of them.

He took me to the office where I talked to the receptionist who gave me my locker number and combination and gave me my class schedule.

“Are you all set?” Asher asked as I walked out of the office.

“You’re still here?” I asked, surprised.

“Yeah. You don’t have a clue where any of your classes are.” He said taking my class schedule and he started looking through it.

“Shit. You’re in all of my classes.”

“Well, isn’t that convenient.” I asked, sarcastically.

“Come on. We’ve got english first.” He said.

“Lead the way.” I said.

So we headed to the classroom and Asher took me to the back of the classroom where there was one seat left. He told the person at the desk next to it to go find another seat and they did. So he let me sit down beside him.

“Does everyone around here just do what you say?” I asked, looking at him curiously.

“Well, my father is the head warrior and everyone knows that he’s been training me since before everyone else started training. I’ve got a few years on them and they’ve seen the way that I can fight. They don’t usually argue with me.” He explained.

Then I saw him look at a girl that was approaching us and he rolled his eyes and let out a sigh.

“Asher. There you are. I’ve been looking for you all morning.” She said.

“What do you want Paris?” He asked.

“You didn’t call me last night.” She said.

“Yeah. That’s because I dumped you. Remember. It was only last week. I’m sure you’ve found another sucker by now.” Asher said.

“You didn’t mean that. You always say that you’re sick of me but then you always come back to me.”

“Well, not this time. Get lost.” Asher said. And the smile wiped from her face as she turned to glare at me before she walked away.

“Oh fun. I think she hates me.” I said, not very quietly.

“Yeah. She does. You might want to watch your back.” Asher said.

“I can take care of myself. Don’t worry.” I said.

“I know that she might look all prim and proper, but I am telling you, watch your back.” He said.

I looked back over at Paris, who was sitting with her friends, and she was still looking back at me with an evil glare. If looks could kill, then I would be burnt to a crisp right now.

When the teacher finally came in to start the class he noticed that I was new but he didn’t make a big deal out of it, which I was grateful for. I didn’t want him to make a big deal out of it.

He gave us heaps of work to do and everyone groaned at it, especially at the homework that he gave us which was heaps. But he looked like he took pleasure in it.

Our next class was history. But not conventional history. It was werewolf history.

We had little classes about werewolf history at my last pack and I was really interested in this class.

By lunch time that day I was already feeling pretty exhausted. I knew that this school was going to give me everything that I needed in order to graduate and know what I needed to know to go further in life.

When Asher and I got some food, he led me to a table where there were already a few people sitting.

“Guys, this is Savannah. Savannah, this is Theo, Jasper, Max and Theo’s mate Malia.” Asher said.

“It’s nice to meet you all.” I said.

“It’s nice to meet you too. How are you enjoying your first day?” Malia asked.

“It’s pretty good so far. Except already having a group of girls wanting to kill me.” I said as I sat down. And the others looked at Asher.

“Paris.” He said.

“Oh.” They all said in unison.

“Yeah, watch that bitch. She’s crazy.” Max said.

“Thanks. I’ll do that.” I said.

“Apart from that, how is this place going for you?” Theo asked.

“It’s pretty good. I’m not too impressed by the amount of homework.”

“You didn’t get homework in your old pack?”

“No. The Alpha didn’t really care that much about it.” I said.

“Lucky. This Alpha wants to make sure that we are well educated.” Max said.

“Well, I guess there’s nothing wrong with that.” I said.

“We’d like one night off, if possible.” Jasper said.

“Well, every afternoon we have training. The seniors train out in the main field. We do it every afternoon. In human form and then in wolf form. I think it’s human form today.” Asher explained.

“How much do you train?” I asked.

“More than I think we should.” Asher said.

After lunch we had to go to the locker rooms with Malia and we got changed into our gym clothes and she took me out to the senior training field.

I noticed that the Alpha and Beta were sitting there on the bleachers watching us all walk out and the Alpha had his eyes fixed on me immediately.

“They come to every training. Alpha Kane wants to watch. He wants to make sure that we are getting everything we can out of these sessions. He wants to make sure that everyone in the pack knows how to defend themselves if we ever get attacked.” Malia explained.

“It sounds like he really cares about the pack.” I said.

“Yeah. I guess he does. He doesn’t really show it. But when he took over, he changed a lot of things for the better of the pack. To make sure that we weren’t still living in the stone ages.” She said.

“Savannah. I told the trainer that I will be paired with you today.” Asher said, jogging over to us.

“Oh, do you really like me that much?” I asked, teasing him and I could see that his cheeks tinged a little pink as he blushed. And I started laughing. “I’m teasing you.” I said.

“Well, I didn’t want you to end up with Paris. And I thought that I could talk you through everything that we’ve already learnt here.” He said.

“Alright. Sounds good. Just don’t take it easy on me.” I said.

So we got to the training ground and we all paired up to spar with each other and Asher was on the attack while I had to defend. He would attack but only lightly touch me when he attacked and I told him not to take it easy on me.

He did it a couple more times before I got fed up with it and the next time he charged at me I dodged out of the way, threw my leg up and kicked him in the stomach and elbowed him on the back of the head.

As he slowly stood up I kicked him in the back of the knee, causing him to fall to his knees and I kicked him in the back. Which caused him to land face down on the grass.

Everyone stopped what they were doing to look over at us and the Alpha and Beta had even stood up from where they were sitting and Asher rolled over onto his back while groaning.

“I told you not to take it easy on me.” I said.

“Uh-hu.” He muttered.

“Are you going to actually fight me now?” I asked.

“Can I have a different partner?” He asked.

“Nope. You asked for her and you got her.” The trainer said.

“Dad.” Asher tried to yell with whatever energy he had.

“Oh. Are you the head warrior? Hi, I’m Savannah.” I said.

“It’s very nice to meet you, Savannah. I’m Jason. Now, get up Asher. You just let a girl put you on your ass and that is an embarrassment to me.” Jason said. But I just smirked at both of them.

We got back to training and this time, Asher was a lot more prepared to deal with me.
