“You knew he was coming home and didn’t tell me?” I use the calmest tone I can manage, because inside, I’m freaking out. I lean my cane on the chair, use the desk to press myself up, and walk around to the other side of the desk.

“You’re going to fall, Kas.” Milo puts out his hand for me to take when he notices me struggling to keep my balance. It seems like no matter how much physical therapy I go through, my hip just won’t cooperate and stiffens up if I sit for any length of time.

“I’m fine.” I take his hand anyway and hold on to it while I lean against the desk in front of him.

“Kas, the only thing we knew was that Bronx emailed Reggie two weeks ago and told him there needed to be accommodations for eleven people. I swear. He didn’t say who it was for or that he was coming home, just that the dwellings needed to be ready.” Milo rubs his thumb along the back of my hand while he speaks. “He didn’t respond when Reggie emailed him back with questions.
