BUTTERCUP

I watched the door close behind Draven as he went to see Seraphina, and I felt my emotions finally snapping inside me.

“Enough of this shit,” I muttered to myself, sliding off his bed. My legs still felt weak but I forced myself to move. I grabbed my dress from the floor and pulled it on, not caring how messy I looked. I wasn’t staying here like some pathetic toy he could use whenever he felt guilty.

I stormed down the hallway to the small room I’d been staying in and started throwing clothes into a bag. “Why did you even save me, Draven? Just to make me worse than they did?”

The door burst open behind me. I didn’t need to turn around to know it was him.

“Buttercup, please stop.”

“Get out,” I said without looking at him, shoving another shirt into the bag. My hands shook as I did. “Go be with your Luna. I’m done.”

Draven stepped inside and shut the door. “You’re not leaving here.”

I spun around with my eyes burning. “Why the hell not? You made your choice. You fucked me twice and still ran to her. Tell me why you saved me two years ago if this is how it ends. I deserve more than this.”

He moved closer, his big frame filling the room. The claw tattoo on his chest was still visible from our earlier time together. “I saw you that night and you were bleeding and barely alive, being dragged by those low-life wolves who bought you. I couldn’t just walk away.”

Then I said. “So you brought me here, fucked me, made me fall in love, and now you throw me away? Great plan, Alpha.”

Draven reached for my arm but I jerked back. “It wasn’t like that. You were different. You still are.”

“Different how?” I stepped closer, poking his chest hard. “Different enough to hide? Different enough to fuck but not be chosen? I need to know, Draven. Why save a broken human girl just to destroy her?”

He grabbed my wrist, not hard but firm. His eyes searched my face. “Because the moment I pulled you out of that hellhole, I knew you were mine. Even if the pack rules said I couldn’t keep you.”

Tears stung my eyes and I tried to pull away but he held on. “Then why does it feel like you’re killing me now?”

Draven’s other hand moved to the back of my dress. Before I could stop him, he slowly unzipped it. The fabric slid down my shoulders and I froze, breathing fast.

“Don’t,” I whispered, but my voice broke.

He turned me around gently. His fingers traced the faded scars across my back. The ugly marks from belts, from whips, from the people who were supposed to protect me.

“Who did this to you?” His voice was low, almost shaking.

I closed my eyes and the memories flooding in through the touch. “The first person was my father, Then when he sold me to those wolves… they were worse. They said a human like me only existed to breed strong pups. Every time I fought back, they made sure I paid.”

Draven’s fingers kept moving over the scars, slow and careful, like he was trying to memorize every line. “I killed them... All of them. The ones who hurt you.”

I turned back to face him, dress half fallen, tears running down my cheeks. “Then why couldn’t you fight for me? Why save me from them only to hand me this kind of pain?”

He pulled me against his chest, his arms wrapping around me tight. “Because my father chose love over the pack. He picked a human woman and it got him killed. Got half of our people killed. I can’t do that to everyone who depends on me. But fuck, Buttercup...seeing these scars again makes me want to burn everything down.”

I hit his chest weakly. “Then burn it or let me go. Stop holding me here like this.”

“I can’t let you go.” His voice got rough. He tilted my chin up and kissed me. This time it was slower, deeper, full of all the things he wouldn’t say out loud.

I kissed him back even though it hurt. My hands gripped his shoulders as he lifted me onto the bed. We didn’t rush this time. He laid me down and kissed every scar on my back, whispering “I’m sorry” against my skin between each one.

“You make me feel safe and worthless at the same time,” I said, my voice cracking as he moved over me. “How do you do that?”

Draven looked down at me, his eyes full of conflict. “Because I’m selfish. I need you even when I know I should stay away.”

We moved together slowly this time...Not just sex but closer to it. Every touch, every whisper made the tears fall harder. I held onto him like he was still my savior, even while knowing he was also the one breaking me.

“I hate that I still love you,” I whispered against his neck as pleasure built.

“I know,” he breathed, holding me tighter. “I know, little one.”

For those few minutes, it felt like maybe he really saw me...All of me. The broken parts and everything.

Then the door suddenly opened.

“Well, well, well,...” a smooth female voice said from the doorway. “Am I interrupting the show?”

Seraphina stood there in her red gown, her arms crossed, and she wore a nasty smirk on her perfect face as she looked at us tangled together on the bed.

"A month," I said as I stood on the repaired ridge overlooking the sanctuary. The air smelled like fresh timber and turned earth. "Feels longer. Feels like we barely made it."Draven came up behind me and rested his hands on my waist. "We did make it. The wards hold. The dead are buried. The bonds are quieter."Kai leaned on the new railing, still careful with his side. "Quieter is good. I can sleep without feeling like someone is about to cut the link."Asher stood a little apart, eyes on the western stretch that still showed scars from the Keeper and Silas. "The presence remains. Dormant. Aware. But it has not pushed. That is more than I expected."Lila sat on a low wall nearby, one hand on her growing stomach. "The baby is stronger every check. Mira still cannot say what the cold edge means. We will find out when it arrives. Until then I build and I wait."I turned to face them. The trinity marks on my skin felt different now—scarred in places from the seal break, but steady. The S

BUTTERCUP "Is it over?" I stood at the edge of the ruined western approach, the air thick with the smell of burned stone and cold magic. "Tell me Silas is actually gone. I need to hear it."Asher's eyes stayed narrowed on the torn ground, his jaw tight. "The signature that was Silas is gone. Consumed. The Keeper fed until there was nothing left of him to fight with. Then it pulled back." His voice cracked on the last word, like he didn't believe it himself.Draven's hand settled on my shoulder, gripping harder than he needed to. "Gone is good enough for today. We bury our dead and count what we still have. That's all we get right now."Kai leaned on a broken post, his bandage dark with old blood, his voice sharp with exhaustion. "My crew found no trace of the controlled pairs that were still moving. When he went down, most of the links snapped. Some bodies. Some empty." He looked up, eyes hard. "Derek is still missing. Someone needs to explain to me how that happened.""Now is not th

LILA***"How many?" The words tore out of me the moment I could speak, my throat raw, the bed the only thing keeping me upright. "Do not soften it. Names. Numbers. Now."Buttercup sat on the edge of the mattress, hands wrapped around one of mine, her grip almost too tight. "Seven outer patrol. Three sanctuary residents who did not make the inner halls in time. Two of Kai's crew. Twelve total that we have confirmed." She hesitated, and the pause said more than the numbers. "The western approach is torn open. We pulled everyone else back."I stared at the ceiling. The names started arriving whether I wanted them or not. Toren, the young wolf who had asked Draven for a secondary bond. Marta, the older woman who had only been at the sanctuary eight days. Finn and Jessa from Kai's people. A builder named Oren who had helped raise the first real walls. People who had trusted the wards I built.Kai shoved off the doorframe, still pale and bandaged, his voice sharp with accusation. "Derek is

Buttercup "Do it now!" I shouted back at the bond link as Silas finished devouring the second life in front of me, his victim's scream still echoing in my skull. "He refused. Open the seal!" The seal inside us shattered. It did not open gently. It tore violently, as if something on the other side had been clawing to get out all along. White-hot and freezing pain ripped through my chest simultaneously, it was what my body could not process. The marks on my skin blazed and then guttered as one of the anchors holding the structure together gave way with an almost audible snap. I collapsed to my knees on the neutral ground, the impact felt all through my body. Behind the wards, Draven roared and Kai cursed in a voice I barely recognized. Asher didn't say anything. "Hold the line," I gasped through the bond, my voice cracking under the strain. "Do not let it turn on us first." The air above the strip of ground split apart with a sound like the world itself screaming. What emerged

BUTTERCUP "This is the last offer." I stepped onto the neutral strip of ground between our outer wards and the dark tree line, my voice carrying farther than I felt. Draven, Kai, and Asher stayed just behind the boundary, close enough for the bonds to hold, far enough that the choice stayed mine alone. "Release every bonded pair you control. Leave our territory. Leave the safe house alone. Walk away from me and everything tied to me. Do that, and we do not release what is sealed inside our bonds." Alpha Silas stood opposite me, smiling like we were discussing the weather instead of the fate of everyone I loved. "Buttercup. Still trying the soft path." His voice dripped with amusement and contempt. "I almost admire it." "It is not soft." I mentioned. "It is the last door. After this there is only the other thing." He lips grew into a thin wry smile. "You mean the Shadow Keeper." He let the silence stretch, savoring it. "You would free that to stop me? You barely survived binding i

BUTTERCUP "What are we going to do." I stood in the damaged room with Draven, Kai, Asher, and Lila. Kai was still bandaged and pale. Lila sat propped against pillows, awake but weak. "Silas is not going to stop. If we wait, he wins by wearing us down. If we release the Shadow Keeper, we might stop him and lose everything we are. There's no clean path." Draven muttered. "Clean path? There is no time for clean paths." He slammed his palm against the table, and the sound made Lila flinch. "I suggest we release it and end him. I will not watch him claim you." "Nobody is claiming her," Kai muttered. "I want him gone too. But has anyone here actually thought this through? Once that thing is free, do we even know if we can put it back? We trapped it once when it was weaker and we were desperate. This time it wakes up inside a full Vessel web. That is different, and you know it." "I know exactly what it is," Draven shot back, rounding on him. "I know it's a weapon sitting right in fro
