Chapter 2

Scarlet Leaves
My voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the silence. "Seven years ago, all of you were convinced Evan could never inherit the Alpha title, so you publicly ended the engagement and scrambled to curry favor with someone else."

My gaze settled on Alicia's pale face. "Am I right?"

Her lips trembled, but not a single word came out.

"Shut up!" Evan's roar shattered the silence.

The next instant, his palm cracked across my face with a sharp, resounding slap. "Erin Bloodmoon, you've gotten completely out of hand!"

I clutched my cheek, staring at him in disbelief. But he didn't even glance back. Instead, he scooped up the unconscious Lilian in his arms and strode out of the banquet without a backward glance.

One by one, the werewolves rose and hurried away like they were fleeing a plague. Within moments, only Alicia and I remained by the dying fire.

She approached me, her face alight with undisguised glee. "No wolf would ever want a she-wolf who's more dominant than him. You were never worthy of the Alpha!"

The sky had darkened without warning, and right at that moment, a single cold raindrop splashed against my face.

Then, the heavens opened up. The downpour extinguished the fire and soaked me to the bone.

I trudged through the rain toward Alpha Estate, but all that greeted me was a firmly shut door. I pounded on it desperately.

After a long while, it finally cracked open. The butler, Darius Redfur, peered through the gap, his head bowed, unable to meet my eyes.

"The Alpha's orders," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "The Luna is to... remain at the estate gates and reflect on her mistakes."

With that, the door was slammed shut in my face.

Rain blurred my vision, and the last of my strength drained away. Bone-deep cold seeped in, wrapping around me tightly.

Then, everything went black, and I collapsed into the mud.

When I came to, I was lying in my bedroom. The air was thick with the bitter scent of medicinal herbs.

"Luna, you're awake." A soft voice came from beside the bed. It was Lilian.

She held a mug of medicinal brew, her face a mask of perfect innocence and vulnerability. "I brewed this especially for you. Please finish it."

I stared at her blankly without moving.

She pretended not to notice my coldness and continued brightly, "The Alpha also said that I'm to stay at the estate until I give birth to his pups. I'll be able to look after you while I'm here."

She emphasized the words "look after you" deliberately.

I raised my hand and knocked the mug out of her hand in one swift motion, and the brown liquid splashed on her.

"Ah!" Lilian shrieked, clutching her chest as she stumbled backward. "Have you lost your mind?"

Evan quickly appeared in the doorway. In two strides, he was there, catching Lilian before she hit the floor.

His gaze lingered on my pale face for a moment. Then, he looked away and said stiffly to Lilian, "Please leave us."

Lilian shot me a wounded glance before obeying.

As the door closed behind Lilian, Evan stepped to the bedside and loomed over me. "Erin, I'm doing this to protect your position as Luna! The Elders have been complaining for years about you not bearing pups.

"I told you, once Lilian delivers the pups, I'll send her away immediately. Then, we can go back to how we were. Isn't that good enough?"

I looked up at him and felt like I didn't know him anymore. "Have you forgotten the oath you made before the Moon Goddess?"

He froze, and his gaze drifted past me into empty space.

"You said you'll never betray me, no matter what. It's only been seven years. Have you already forgotten about it so quickly?"

Anger surged through me, and my words came tumbling out faster. "Had I known this was how things were going to be, I never would have left the Forest Shadow pack! And I sure as hell wouldn't have helped you become the Alpha!"

His expression iced over. "So? Are you saying you've regretted it? Don't you forget, Erin, according to pack law, the Council of Elders can move to depose a Luna who fails to produce an heir after three years.

"I was the one who stood against the pressure to keep you in place year after year! Me! Otherwise, you'd have been long demoted to a humble Omega!"

He leaned in, his voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "Besides, no male can ever stomach your damn temper!"

I fell silent. After a long moment, I spoke quietly. "I can't bear pups because I took that silver dagger for you."

Evan went rigid, but his voice stayed cold. "That was your choice, Erin. I never asked you to sacrifice for me."

This time, it was my turn to freeze.

He continued, "Lilian will bear my pups. That decision is final, and nothing you say will change it!"

Then, he turned to leave. Just before he reached the door, I called out, "Evan."

My voice was soft, but it carried absolute finality. "Do you remember what I said would happen if you ever betrayed me?"

The words pinned him in place, and a long silence stretched between us. Finally, he opened the door and left.

I lowered my head and ran my fingers over the wolf-fang bracelet on my wrist.

He had personally fastened it on me during our mating ceremony seven years ago.

I mumbled to myself, "Evan, I told you, if you ever betray me, I will make you disappear from my world forever."

The day after I returned to the Scarlet Flame pack, I gathered everyone in the Moon Goddess' Square. It was the exact spot where Evan had once planned to mark Lilian.Wolves streamed in steadily, males and females, young and old, filling the square until it was packed. Some stood, some crouched, and some leaned against trees.I stood on the platform and looked out at the sea of faces below.Evan was escorted to the front with his head hanging low. Lilian stood off to the side, also with her head down. She had been released from the holding area and was now doing menial tasks around the pack."I've called you here because I have an announcement to make," I said.Every face lifted toward me. "Starting today, I, Erin Bloodmoon, officially take command of the Scarlet Flame pack as its new Alpha."The words had barely left my mouth before the crowd erupted. "On what grounds?"A male wolf shoved his way forward. He was the one I'd beaten up before. "You're a she-wolf! How dare you cla

Half a month later, Ayden visited. He stood at the pack entrance watching the wolves come and go, and raised an eyebrow. "You've got them under pretty good control.""Not too bad, I guess," I said.He followed me into Alpha Estate, sat down, and crossed his legs. "Word is you've got all the she-wolves wrapped around your finger.""It's not about having them wrapped around my finger. I just helped them stand on their own," I corrected him.Ayden studied me for a long time, then broke into a grin. "You really are my sister.""Was I not your sister before this?""No, not in the past," he answered. "Before this, you behaved as if the world revolved around that one male wolf. You're different now."I looked at him and suddenly asked, "Ayden, you hated me for seven years. Why did you still help me?"His smile faded. He stayed quiet for a moment before answering, "Like I said, because you're my sister. No matter how much I hate you, you're still my sister. Right before Mom died, she t

Late that night, after finishing my patrol, I returned to Alpha Estate. As soon as I stepped through the front door, I saw Evan standing at the end of the hallway. Though he was under house arrest, he was allowed to move freely within the compounds of the estate. I stopped and looked at him. He, in turn, looked back at me too.Moonlight streamed through the windows, falling across his face. He had lost a lot of weight. His eyes were sunken, and his face unshaven. He barely resembled the Alpha he used to be. His clothes hung loose on his frame, like they were draped over a pole."Erin," he called out to me.I didn't respond and instead turned to leave."Wait!" he cried out, catching up to me. "Please, hear me out."I stopped in my tracks but didn't turn around. "Speak."He stood behind me for a long time in silence. Finally, he spoke. "I know nothing I say now will make a difference. But I still need to say it. I was wrong. I was really, truly wrong."I turned to face him. "Do

I settled into life in the Scarlet Flame pack.Ayden returned to the Forest Shadow pack with most of the warriors, leaving only a small unit behind to help me keep order.Marsha had come along with me too. Worried about my wounds, she insisted on taking care of me herself.I stayed in Alpha Estate, in the bedroom that once belonged to Evan and me. But now, there was no trace of him left. The room felt empty, with just a bed, a table, and a single chair in it.Evan was confined to the guest chamber, whereas Lilian and the rest of the captives were held together in a separate building.Every day, I patrolled the territory, checking to see if anyone was kicking up trouble. In the beginning, the male wolves glared at me with open hostility. Some shoved past me on purpose, brushing against my shoulder hard. Others would spit on the ground right in front of me. I ignored them. But slowly, their expressions changed, because the she-wolves were starting to speak up.One day, a thin, fr

  • Luna's Rules for a Counterattack   Chapter 5

The full moon hung high overhead. The Forest Shadow pack warriors lay in wait, hidden among the trees just outside the Scarlet Flame territory.I stood at the very front, eyes fixed on the distant glow of flames in the Moon Goddess' Square. The place was alive with voices. The pack was celebrating, waiting to watch their Alpha mark his new Luna.Through the mind-link, Ayden's voice came through. "Ready?""Yes.""Remember, you have only one task tonight," he said. "Capture Evan alive.""Got it."I raised my hand and swept it forward. The warriors shifted instantly. In their wolf forms, they surged toward the Scarlet Flame pack's gates like a black tide. Though the sharp cracks of shifting bones echoed through the night, not a single whimper of pain escaped them. The two sentries at the entrance barely had time to register what was happening before they were tackled to the ground. Their screams were cut short just as the sound left their throats. We poured into the territory and

I leaned against Ayden, every ounce of strength drained from my body.Though he held me steady, I could feel him trembling. His rage was barely contained, and his voice came out cold as ice. "Executioner, Erin has completed the Trial of Redemption. Is she free to leave now?"The executioner swallowed hard. He glanced toward Evan in the distance, then back at Ayden, and finally nodded. "Yes. She's… free."I clutched the document in my hand, my nails digging into my palm. The bloodstains on the paper were still wet with my own blood.Ayden scooped me up in one swift motion and turned toward the pack entrance.Behind us, Evan's voice rang out. "Erin!"I didn't look back, and Ayden didn't stop either. He carried me through the gates of the Scarlet Flame pack. Outside, a black off-road vehicle waited. A dozen warriors from the Forest Shadow pack stood by the doors. When they saw us, they bowed their heads in unison. "Alpha."Ayden paid them no attention and placed me gently in the
