Chapter 3

Scarlet Leaves
I slipped off the bed, my bare feet meeting the icy floor. Then, I unrolled a sheet of parchment and hurriedly scribbled a letter.

After I was done writing the letter, I summoned my most trusted confidant, a loyal servant who had followed me here to the Scarlet Flame pack all those years ago. "Deliver this letter to Ayden personally, as fast as you can."

He took the letter, nodded solemnly, and vanished into the night.

I threw on an outer robe and headed to another room to pack my things. As I turned a corner in the hallway, muffled moans drifted from the guest chamber.

"Evan… It's been seven years… I've finally waited long enough…" It was Lilian's voice.

Something compelled me forward. The door was left slightly ajar, and through the narrow gap, I saw an unsightly scene.

Lilian's legs were spread wide, suspended in the air, swaying lewdly with the intense rhythm of Evan's thrusts. Her cheeks were flushed, and her moans unrestrained. "Deeper, Evan… Don't stop…"

Evan's back tensed as he drove harder, faster.

I stood frozen, my blood turning to ice. Whatever lingering feelings I had left for him died in that moment.

I turned away and returned to our bedroom. When I flung open the wardrobe, I saw our clothes hanging neatly in perfect order. I seized one of his shirts and hurled it out the window. Then another. And another.

When all the clothes were gone, I moved on to everything else that belonged to him—his ring, his hunting bow, and every gift he had ever given me. One by one, I threw them out the window and into the mud outside.

Finally, my gaze fell on the wolf-fang bracelet around my wrist. I gripped it and yanked hard. The cord snapped, and fangs scattered across the floor.

When that was done, I returned to the desk, spread out a piece of fresh parchment, and drafted an application to dissolve the mate bond between Evan and me. Then, I signed my name at the bottom—Erin Bloodmoon.

At daybreak, I carried the document to the Council of Elders.

I waited all day. But in the end, it wasn't the Elders who came. It was Evan and Lilian. She clung to his arm, glowing with triumph.

When Evan spotted me, he instinctively shook her off. His face darkened. "Erin, what nonsense are you up to now?"

"I'm dissolving the mate bond." I looked him straight in the eye and enunciated each word clearly, "This decision is final, and nothing you say will change it!"

Lilian let out a theatrical gasp, but her eyes danced with barely contained glee. The very next instant, her expression shifted to one of worry. Her voice trembled with helplessness.

"Luna, you may not be aware, but in the Scarlet Flame pack, a she-wolf cannot dissolve the bond unless her mate consents. The only exception is if… if the she-wolf voluntarily submits to the Trial of Redemption."

She let the words hang as malicious delight flashed in her eyes. "A hundred lashes as you walk barefoot over ten yards of burning coals."

It was clearly a punishment designed to terrorize any she-wolf who dared seek freedom after betrayal by her mates, yet they called it redemption. How absurd, and how bitterly ironic.

I paled and stepped back involuntarily.

"There's no need for this, Erin," Evan said, reaching a hand out toward me.

But I sidestepped his reach. My voice came out clean and decisive. "Fine. I accept it."

Evan's head snapped up. Disbelief, raw panic, and something close to fear crossed his face. "Erin! Why must it come to this? It's just a pup! Why can't you just endure it?"

I looked at him and forced a bitter smile. "Evan, the pups have never been the problem. The problem is that your heart is no longer pure."

He stared at me with a complex expression on his face, not able to utter a single word.

Before he could speak again, Lilian leaned into his chest weakly. "How did it come to this? This is all my fault..."

The sight of them turned my stomach. I let out a cold laugh and walked away.

The trial began under the witness of the Alpha and the Council of Elders. Glowing red coals stretched ten full yards ahead. Even from a distance away, the heat slammed into me like a wall.

I stepped onto the coals barefoot.

With a sharp hiss, the stench of scorched skin rose immediately.

At the same time, barbed lashes tore into my back. Each one ripped away strips of flesh.

I didn't scream. Instead, I simply clenched my jaw, stayed silent, and forced one step after another.

Evan stood a short distance away, his face ashen. Several times he lurched forward, only to be held back by Lilian in an iron grip. "Alpha, this is the Luna's choice. It's also pack law!"

My vision began to blur. Every step was pure agony.

I had no idea how long it took me, but eventually, I reached the end.

The executioner of the Council of Elders placed the stamped document in front of me.

With the last of my strength, I reached out and took it. The moment my fingers closed around the paper, my body gave out. I pitched forward.

Evan cried out and started toward me, then froze mid-step.

A powerful arm had caught me before I hit the ground.

Then, a voice—cold, furious, and achingly familiar—sounded above my head. "What have you done to my sister?"

I whipped around immediately, and there stood Ayden Bloodmoon, my brother who had once sworn to tear me to pieces.

The day after I returned to the Scarlet Flame pack, I gathered everyone in the Moon Goddess' Square. It was the exact spot where Evan had once planned to mark Lilian.Wolves streamed in steadily, males and females, young and old, filling the square until it was packed. Some stood, some crouched, and some leaned against trees.I stood on the platform and looked out at the sea of faces below.Evan was escorted to the front with his head hanging low. Lilian stood off to the side, also with her head down. She had been released from the holding area and was now doing menial tasks around the pack."I've called you here because I have an announcement to make," I said.Every face lifted toward me. "Starting today, I, Erin Bloodmoon, officially take command of the Scarlet Flame pack as its new Alpha."The words had barely left my mouth before the crowd erupted. "On what grounds?"A male wolf shoved his way forward. He was the one I'd beaten up before. "You're a she-wolf! How dare you cla

Half a month later, Ayden visited. He stood at the pack entrance watching the wolves come and go, and raised an eyebrow. "You've got them under pretty good control.""Not too bad, I guess," I said.He followed me into Alpha Estate, sat down, and crossed his legs. "Word is you've got all the she-wolves wrapped around your finger.""It's not about having them wrapped around my finger. I just helped them stand on their own," I corrected him.Ayden studied me for a long time, then broke into a grin. "You really are my sister.""Was I not your sister before this?""No, not in the past," he answered. "Before this, you behaved as if the world revolved around that one male wolf. You're different now."I looked at him and suddenly asked, "Ayden, you hated me for seven years. Why did you still help me?"His smile faded. He stayed quiet for a moment before answering, "Like I said, because you're my sister. No matter how much I hate you, you're still my sister. Right before Mom died, she t

Late that night, after finishing my patrol, I returned to Alpha Estate. As soon as I stepped through the front door, I saw Evan standing at the end of the hallway. Though he was under house arrest, he was allowed to move freely within the compounds of the estate. I stopped and looked at him. He, in turn, looked back at me too.Moonlight streamed through the windows, falling across his face. He had lost a lot of weight. His eyes were sunken, and his face unshaven. He barely resembled the Alpha he used to be. His clothes hung loose on his frame, like they were draped over a pole."Erin," he called out to me.I didn't respond and instead turned to leave."Wait!" he cried out, catching up to me. "Please, hear me out."I stopped in my tracks but didn't turn around. "Speak."He stood behind me for a long time in silence. Finally, he spoke. "I know nothing I say now will make a difference. But I still need to say it. I was wrong. I was really, truly wrong."I turned to face him. "Do

I settled into life in the Scarlet Flame pack.Ayden returned to the Forest Shadow pack with most of the warriors, leaving only a small unit behind to help me keep order.Marsha had come along with me too. Worried about my wounds, she insisted on taking care of me herself.I stayed in Alpha Estate, in the bedroom that once belonged to Evan and me. But now, there was no trace of him left. The room felt empty, with just a bed, a table, and a single chair in it.Evan was confined to the guest chamber, whereas Lilian and the rest of the captives were held together in a separate building.Every day, I patrolled the territory, checking to see if anyone was kicking up trouble. In the beginning, the male wolves glared at me with open hostility. Some shoved past me on purpose, brushing against my shoulder hard. Others would spit on the ground right in front of me. I ignored them. But slowly, their expressions changed, because the she-wolves were starting to speak up.One day, a thin, fr

  • Luna's Rules for a Counterattack   Chapter 5

The full moon hung high overhead. The Forest Shadow pack warriors lay in wait, hidden among the trees just outside the Scarlet Flame territory.I stood at the very front, eyes fixed on the distant glow of flames in the Moon Goddess' Square. The place was alive with voices. The pack was celebrating, waiting to watch their Alpha mark his new Luna.Through the mind-link, Ayden's voice came through. "Ready?""Yes.""Remember, you have only one task tonight," he said. "Capture Evan alive.""Got it."I raised my hand and swept it forward. The warriors shifted instantly. In their wolf forms, they surged toward the Scarlet Flame pack's gates like a black tide. Though the sharp cracks of shifting bones echoed through the night, not a single whimper of pain escaped them. The two sentries at the entrance barely had time to register what was happening before they were tackled to the ground. Their screams were cut short just as the sound left their throats. We poured into the territory and

I leaned against Ayden, every ounce of strength drained from my body.Though he held me steady, I could feel him trembling. His rage was barely contained, and his voice came out cold as ice. "Executioner, Erin has completed the Trial of Redemption. Is she free to leave now?"The executioner swallowed hard. He glanced toward Evan in the distance, then back at Ayden, and finally nodded. "Yes. She's… free."I clutched the document in my hand, my nails digging into my palm. The bloodstains on the paper were still wet with my own blood.Ayden scooped me up in one swift motion and turned toward the pack entrance.Behind us, Evan's voice rang out. "Erin!"I didn't look back, and Ayden didn't stop either. He carried me through the gates of the Scarlet Flame pack. Outside, a black off-road vehicle waited. A dozen warriors from the Forest Shadow pack stood by the doors. When they saw us, they bowed their heads in unison. "Alpha."Ayden paid them no attention and placed me gently in the
