Phil's POV

"It's still as beautiful as I remembered," Lucy said as I smiled.

Yeah well, it's still the same because I know how much she loved to play in the garden, even when she was old enough, she never stopped. I didn't let my mom or anyone redecorate because I hoped she would return and when she did, I wanted things to be as she left it.

We were on our way in when I heard an agonizing scream. Without thinking, I ran in as fast as my legs could carry me, my heart racing.

The moment I saw Vera sprawled on the floor, my heart somersaulted in my chest.

I looked around for any clue of what might have happened, and that's when I saw Ryan, one of my guards with a broken neck and a cracked skull.

"Vera," I whispered before rushing over. She had her eyes shut, whimpering, tears flowing from her face.

"Vera," I mumbled and took her in my arms. She jerked away as if burned by my touch.

"Hey, it's me. " I said, reaching for her again. She didn't jump out of my reach, but she did stiffen.

    Vera's POVSomething inside me broke the moment Phil introduced a breeder to the people. I felt worthless on the spot and now sobbing on my bed wasn't going to change anything.“I hate you so much, Phil. I hate you.” I sobbed, drowning in my tears, hitting the soft bed angrily.
