"...nor...Eleanor...Miss Eleanor!!!"

I heard my name being called by someone, the voice sounding a bit distant. My ears were ringing loudly that I couldn't make out who it was. 'Who could it be?' I thought, my eyes still tightly shut.

I open my eyes and raise my head up slightly, the blinding lights in the surrounding sending flicker of pain through my eyes.

"Is it God?" I thought aloud.

"God?" The voice responded. "What do you mean, Miss Eleanor?" He continued.

Finally adjusting my eyes to the light, I was met with a desk in front of me with papers scattered on it. An office computer sitting comfortably, while humming softly, on the side was an ipad.

I was sitting behind the desk, a file glued to my face due to laying on it for long. Peeling it off my face absentmindedly, a thought crossed my mind 'Is there an office in the afterlife?'

Moving my gaze from the desk to the well dressed man in front of me, I exclaimed "Mr Charles!!!" My eyes widening in shock.

"I don't think it's appropriate to sleep while at work, Miss Eleanor" Charles said, pushing his glasses back slightly with his index finger. Blatantly ignoring my exclaim.

"Work? When did I start working in the afterlife? And why does this place look so much like the Warren's Inc?" I asked a barrage of questions, my eyes darting around in confusion.

"Wait!!" I stopped "Did you die too?" I asked, nodding my head as if understanding what was happening.

"I don't think I understand what you mean, Miss Eleanor" Charles said, his expression stoic, devoid of any emotions.

"Huh?" I asked, tilting my head to the side in confusion.

*Sigh*

He sighed, clearly tired of my never ending questions that probably didn't make any sense to him

"Mr Warren has been waiting for the documents he gave you yesterday" Charles said, his eyes roaming around my scattered desk.

"What documents?" I asked, confused.

"What do you mean Miss Eleanor? Did you loose your memory or something?!" He asked.

"What do you mean?" I was getting more confused, my brain trying to process everything. It doesn't seem like I'm in the afterlife.

"The documents with the construction of the city mall, Mr Warren gave them to you yesterday!!" Charles said, tiredness evident on his face.

Hearing that, my heart skipped a beat. "What year is it??"

Charles furrowed his brows. "What kind of question is that? It's 2025"

My breath caught in my throat. 2025? That couldn't be right. The last thing I remembered was being thrown into the well, my body weak as I lost consciousness in 2031, which was just yesterday, I think?. There's no way I'm in 2025.

My head spun as I clutched the edge of the desk. "No, no, that’s impossible..." I whispered.

Charles' tired expression turned into concern. "Are you okay? You’ve been acting weird all day." Though his face still stoic, you could feel the concern in his voice.

I swallowed hard. "Charles... What exactly did Mr. Warren say when he gave me those documents?"

Charles sighed, rubbing his temples. "He just said, 'Make sure these stay safe. You know what happened last time.'" He shot me a wary glance. "And honestly? I have no idea what he meant."

Neither did I. But I knew one thing for sure....something was very, very wrong.

Wait!!

I think I remember now. The documents was stolen by someone, from what I could remember, but the person was never caught.

That document was very important to the company cause it didn't only hold the file for the city mall, but also hidden secrets about the company.

I found out later that Mr Warren gave me that document without telling me about the extra files in it, only warning me about not opening it.

He handed it to me with the thought that no one would suspect anything. He was so cold to me then, I couldn't believe we got married later on.

'Wait, that's not what's important right now' I thought, bringing myself back to reality.

Shuffling around my desk, I couldn't find the documents. My heart raced as I searched around, only to find it between other files.

"I can't believe I kept it carelessly" I mumbled to myself, sighing in relief.

"Here's the document" I said, stretching it forward towards Charles, smiling slightly.

"You were asked to hand it over yourself" Charles said, ignoring my outstretched hand. Pushing his glasses back with his index finger, AGAIN.

'I wonder what it is with people who wears glasses and pushing it back' I humphed.

Charles gave me a pointed look. "Don’t tell me you forgot about that too?"

I let out a nervous chuckle, scratching the back of my head. "Uh… maybe?"

He sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of his nose. "You’re impossible."

I watched as he adjusted his glasses again, and I couldn't help but smirk. "You know, for someone who acts all serious, you sure do that dramatic glasses thing a lot."

Charles frowned. "What dramatic glasses thing?"

I mimicked his motion, pushing an imaginary pair of glasses up my nose. "'Oh, I’m Charles, and I can’t go five minutes without doing this...."

He swatted my hand away, looking unamused. "Focus."

"Okay okay. I'll get going now" I chuckled, amused by his annoyance.

The Charles from my memory was always so expressionless, he was the perfect secretary and personal assistant for Mark. It's nice to see him with an emotion on his face, even though it was just for a moment.

Standing in front of Mark's office, I knocked twice before hearing his cold voice from inside, beckoning me to go in.

Taking a deep breath, I pushed the door open and stepped inside.

Mark sat behind his massive oak desk, his piercing gaze already fixed on me. His office was as intimidating as ever....minimalistic, pristine, and eerily quiet, save for the soft hum of the air conditioner.

He leaned back in his chair, lacing his fingers together. "You took your time," he said, his voice devoid of warmth.

I swallowed, stepping forward. "I had to make sure everything was in order."

His eyes flicked to the documents in my hand. "The document?"

I hesitated, my grip tightening around the handle. "Yes….but"

"Give it to me." His voice was sharp, cutting through my sentence like a blade.

I couldn't believe I was just about to tell him to keep it carefully. What if he suspects me, I didn't even open it but I know the file in there could destroy this company.

"You may go" he waved his hand, his eyes glued to the files.

Unable to move, I stared at him, pictures of that night playing in my head, but I couldn't make out some things, some faces. It feels like there was something or someone blurring out the faces.

"Do you need me to open the door for you?" He asked, moving his gaze from the files to my face, his green blue eyes sending shivers down my spine as I felt a thud in my chest.

My heart was beating faster than ever, I could feel myself breaking out in cold sweats and my fingers tremble in fear....my feet stuck in place.

My head becoming a jumble mess as I tried to piece my memories together. 'it felt like it was just yesterday everything happened, but why can't I remember' I thought, my mind in a torrent mess.

I could already feel myself loosing consciousness, but before I could pass out, I felt a strong arm grab my waist...holding me in place.

Then I passed out

Darkness swallowed me whole.

For a moment, maybe minutes, maybe hours....I drifted in nothingness. Fragments of memories flickered in and out, like an old film reel struggling to play.

Then.....light. A dull, warm glow behind my eyelids. Voices. Muffled at first, then clearer.

"Hey… wake up."

A familiar voice. Firm, but laced with concern.

My eyelids felt heavy, but I forced them open. The first thing I saw was a pair of glasses reflecting the dim light.

"Charles…?" My voice was hoarse.

He sighed, sitting beside me. "Yeah."

I blinked, trying to process everything. My head ached, but one thought pushed through the haze.

"Where's Mr Warren?!" I shot up fast, dizziness slamming into me. Charles held my shoulders, keeping me steady.

"Do you plan on falling unconscious again?!" He asked, clearly angry by the way I stood up.

"Sorry" I mumbled.

"Mnn. Mr Warren is at the company, you suddenly fainted in his office" he said.

"Okay" I sighed, relaxing my body as I dig into my memories, it would do me more harm if I were to see him right now. I don't think I could handle it.

I can't believe he killed me and threw me into a well. I was his wife....why would he do something like that.

Wait, something don't seem right. It feels like someone messed with my memories. I can't think of any reason why Mark would want to kill me....his wife.

And what was Liam doing there? I remember seeing his face in my memory. Was he also kidnapped by Mark? No, that can't be the case.

"You seem to be in deep thought" a cold voice brought me back from my jumbled thoughts.

"Huh" I raised my head, my dark brown eyes coming in contact with green blue ones.

The owner of those striking eyes studied me with an unreadable expression. A hint of amusement flickered across his face before it vanished, replaced by his usual icy demeanor. "You've been staring at nothing for the past five minutes," he continued, crossing his arms. "Care to share what's on your mind?" I hesitated. The memory of Liam’s face felt like a puzzle piece that didn’t fit, but why had it surfaced now? And why did it feel so… important? Shaking my head, I muttered, "It's nothing." His eyes narrowed slightly, as if he didn’t believe me, but he didn’t push. Instead, he leaned back against the wall, watching me carefully. But my mind was already elsewhere, replaying that fleeting memory again and again. If Liam hadn’t been kidnapped, then why was he there? And more importantly…what was his connection to Mark? Realizing I was deep in thought again, I cleared my throat, before saying "uhhm, can I get discharged?" While blinking my eyes sheepishly. My relationship w

Setting aside my thoughts, I decided to enjoy the silent ride even though it seems impossible with the man sitting in the driver's seat.Wait...how did he know my address, he never asked me. "How did you know my address?" I asked, forgetting he was my boss."I'm your boss!" He said curtly, stating the obvious.I narrowed my eyes at him, not satisfied with that answer. Yes, he was my boss, but that didn’t explain everything."You never asked for it" I pointed out, crossing my arms. "And I never gave it to you" I continued.Mark didn’t even flinch. His hands remained steady on the wheel, his gaze fixed on the road ahead. "I didn’t need to."That was not reassuring."So you’ve been looking into me?" I pressed, my voice laced with suspicion. He let out a short breath, almost like a sigh. "I look into all my employees"I scoffed, still forgetting I was talking to my boss "Right. And do you also memorize all of their addresses?""...."He ignored my question, I sighed as I decided to let it

Sighing, I decided to just rest for now and starting tomorrow, I can start planning my revenge. With one final glance at the mirror, I slid it back onto the bedside table and turned off the light. The room was quiet, the kind of silence that settles deep into your bones. I sank into the mattress, pulling the covers up to my chin, letting the darkness wrap around me like a shield. Tomorrow, everything would begin. I would find out the truth. I would remember. And I would make them pay. But for now… I let myself drift off to sleep, with vengeance quietly waiting in the corners of my mind. The next day Waking up to the loud sound of my alarm, I stood up groggily and trudged toward the bathroom to get ready for work. The steam from the shower helped clear the lingering fog in my mind, and by the time I stepped out, towel-drying my hair, I already felt more like myself...or at least the version of me I needed to be for today. Standing in front of the mirror, I carefully pu

The body of Mariah Garrett was never found after the tragic incident. A five year old girl, the sole heir to the Garrett empire. Something seems odd, she was the same age as me if she hadn't had that incident. How was I connected to the Garrett family in my past life? I leaned back in my chair, staring at the screen. The information felt like a puzzle, and I couldn’t fit the pieces together. Could I somehow be connected to this Mariah Garrett? A part of me wanted to dismiss the thought, but another part of me...something deep inside felt like the name was too significant to ignore. Was it possible? I stared at the name for a long time, trying to make sense of it. But nothing came to me. A small, unsettling feeling gnawed at my stomach. If I was somehow tied to the Garrett family... what did that mean for me now? Scrolling through my screen, I stopped suddenly, my breath caught in my throat as I felt my hand trembling. The clear picture of Emily Garrett, the mother of Ma

I paused mid-step just outside the cafeteria, realizing I’d completely forgotten to ask Charles why he hadn’t been in the office earlier that morning. It had struck me as odd, but with everything else going on, it slipped my mind. I glanced back briefly, seeing him still seated, now lost in his own thoughts, or maybe pretending to be. Maybe he went on an errand for Mark, I reasoned silently, though the unease didn’t fade. With those two, nothing ever seemed coincidental. Still, if it was an errand, what kind of task required Charles to miss an entire morning at the office? Especially when Mark barely trusted anyone else. Shaking my head, I sighed. Too many questions, not enough answers. One thing was clear... I’d have to keep a closer eye on both of them moving forward. But Charles was a very trustworthy person in my past life, I can't see myself ever doubting him. "What got you so lost in thought, Elle?" A voice asked, snapping me back to reality. Raising my head, I smiled. "L

MARK’S POV "Where is it?" I asked Liam, staring at him coldly as I recalled how Eleanor held his hand. "Chill, dude. You haven't seen me in like what...?" he said, annoyingly calm, tapping his chin in mock thought. "A month? And the first thing you say to me is where is it?" "Quit your playful antics and hand over the file. I've got no time to joke around" I said, already feeling the edge of frustration sharpen in my tone. He let out a dramatic sigh and pulled the slim, black folder from the inner pocket of his coat. “Here you go, Mr. Serious” he said with a smirk, tossing it toward me before making himself at home on my office couch like he owned the place. "Why do you even need a background check on the Garrett company?" He smirked. "None of your business" I said curtly, already getting back to work. Liam whistled lowly. “You do realize the Garretts are bad news, right? Digging into their past isn't exactly... safe.” “I didn’t ask for a lecture.” “I’m just saying”

  • MAFIA'S REBORN WIFE    Chapter 9 Victor Garrett

MARK'S POV Pulling the car to a stop in front of her apartment complex, I got down to help her. She was already fast asleep in the car, her head slumped against the window, soft breath escaping her lips. Her cheeks were still flushed, her lips slightly parted...completely unaware of the world around her. Sighing, I walked to her side of the car and opened the door gently, not wanting to wake her. I stared at her for a brief second before bending down and scooping her into my arms in a bridal style. She stirred slightly, mumbling something incoherent, her head falling against my chest as if it belonged there. She was light, too light. I tightened my hold on her as I made my way inside the building, nodding at the security guard who didn’t ask any questions, thankfully. Just as I reached the second floor, she mumbled something again, her voice barely audible. "Don’t leave me…" I paused, looking down at her. But her eyes were still closed. She wasn’t really awake. ELEANOR'S POV Waking up to a banging headache, it felt like my head was being split into two. Glancing at the table in front of me, I noticed the meds sitting quietly on it. Huh? Did I get this on my way home? I didn’t remember stopping anywhere. Hell, I barely remembered getting through the front door. The last thing I recalled was the sharp scent of cologne… and a hand on my arm. My heart skipped. Something didn’t feel right. Feeling the sharp pain, I winced in pain as I hurriedly grabbed the drugs and downed it with the bottle water. Maybe I managed to get home yesterday and blacked out. Sighing, I got up to take a much needed shower cause I stank of alcohol. Dragging my feet across the cold floor, I peeled off my clothes and stepped into the bathroom. The water took a moment to heat up, sputtering before turning into a steady stream. I stood there, letting it run over my skin, trying to piece together the blur of last night. MARK'S POV Two weeks later. It’s been two weeks since I dealt with Damian. He gave us information, but none of it was useful. Apparently, even among traitors, trust is a scarce commodity. They kept him in the dark. Cowards. Walking into the office, I paused at the doorway. Liam was standing way too close to Eleanor, his posture relaxed, gaze too damn soft...eyes shining like she hung the stars herself. She laughed quietly at something he said, brushing a stray curl behind her ear. And just like that, a sick twist curled in my gut. They’ve been acting strange all week. Their conversations linger longer than necessary. Their eyes meet more than they should. And worse... she smiles at him. She never used to smile like that with me. I clenched my fists at my sides, jaw locked. If he thinks he can rewrite history...he’s dead wrong. "What are you doing here?" I asked coldly, breaking whatever conversation they were having. "Jeez, you scared us man" Liam held his chest pl

MARK'S POV Picking up my phone, I dialled Marcelo's number. He picked up in the first ring. "Hello, sir?" "Get ready" I said curtly before ending the call and heading towards my car. I didn’t need to say more. Marcelo knew exactly what get ready meant. As I stepped into the car and pulled out of the parking lot, the city seemed quieter than usual, like it sensed the storm I was about to unleash. My hands tightened on the wheel. Damien Cross. The first domino. This time, there’d be no warnings, no second chances. Just consequences. And I was done playing nice. The drive to the abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city was silent...too silent. Just the sound of tires against pavement and the hum of my engine. Marcelo was already there when I arrived, leaning against the hood of his black SUV. His sharp suit was impeccable, his expression unreadable. “He’s inside” he said, straightening up. Without a word, I walked past him, through the heavy metal doors.

MARK'S POVThe meeting dragged on longer than expected. By the time Mr. Dominic finally shook my hand and left with his assistant in tow, the sun was already dipping lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the conference room.Eleanor quietly gathered the papers in front of her, moving with a careful precision that made something in my chest tighten.I leaned back in my chair, watching her."Eleanor...are you still mad at me about yesterday?" I asked. I was always one to keep work and personal matters separately, but I just couldn't stand her silence. She's not one to talk unnecessarily but this was grating on my nerves.".....""Eleanor..." "It's all done, Mr Warren." She cuts me off."Mark. MARK’S POV From where I waited in the darkened side street, I saw Liam emerge, shoulders hunched, hands shoved deep in his pockets. Even at this distance I could read the tension in his stride...too quick, too restless. Something had happened up there. Something with Eleanor. My jaw clenched. I didn't want him close to Eleanor, not in this life...not ever. Not after what he did. Not after the betrayal in my past life. But I have to keep my enemies closer, the closer they are... the easier it will be to get them. I can't afford to loose this time, I'll make sure they all rot in hell. Somethings are changing in this life, and I was so sure it was because of Eleanor's strange behaviour. She's changed and I'm gonna find out why. Remembering what happened today, the way she got so angry about me looking out for her, I sighed...she just doesn't know the things that are about to happen. I cleared my throat and tried again. “I was that girl.”Liam stared, eyes widening as the pieces clicked. “The blue‑and‑brown eyes” he whispered. “I thought I imagined that part.”I managed a shaky laugh. “No. You didn’t.” I said, remembering I didn't wear my contact lens that day cause it was night. For a long moment neither of us spoke. Mark stood up just as fast, his chair scraping softly against the floor. “Wait...Eleanor.” I stopped but didn’t turn. “You don’t get to follow me around or even run a background check on me." I huffed before continuing, "You also don't get to invade my personal space like that just because I work for you!" I said calmly. Mark’s jaw tensed at my words, but he didn’t speak right away. The next day* Waking up to the honking sounds of cars outside my window, I groaned as I opened my eyes groggily, my annoyance reaching its peak. I needed to find a new apartment, one that wasn't close to the road Picking up my phone, I saw that it was already past twelve. Yawning loudly, I got up and walked to the kitchen, my stomach growling, reminding me that I didn't eat anything yesterday evening before going to bed. I opened the fridge and stared blankly at the near-empty shelves. A half carton of milk, a few eggs, and...was that leftover Chinese from three days ago? Yeah, no thanks. Closing the fridge with a sigh, I scratched the back of my head and muttered to myself, “Guess I’m ordering food again.” As I grabbed my phone to scroll through food delivery apps, my screen lit up with a message. Liam raised a brow but didn’t push, just shrugged and fell in step beside me. “You’re acting weird” he muttered under his breath, though his tone held no malice, just concern. Mark, however, didn’t say a word. He followed quietly behind us, his presence heavy but unreadable. Still, I could feel his eyes on me, the way they lingered like he was trying to figure out what changed.
