Luna pov
Five years ago, Kian Voss stood in front of the whole pack and said the words that ended me.
"I reject you as my mate."
I remember the silence after my knees wanted to give out, and I didn't let them. I had the sound of his mother crying somewhere in the back of the crowd but I remember walking out of that circle with my head up, even though inside I was bleeding out with every step.
I was seventeen years old but he was my fated mate but he chose the pack's to rules over me,because I'm not that girl I used to be,
Tonight I stand at the edge of Blackthorn territory, wearing another woman's name like armor. Rhea. Just a diplomat from Ashwood, here to look into some border trouble. Nothing more. Nobody here should know my face, my scent, or the sound my heart makes when it breaks.
"Are you sure about this?" Maren's voice comes through my earpiece, low and careful. She has asked me this question in six different ways over the last three days, and each time I've given her the same answer.
"I'm sure," I say, even though my stomach is doing something that feels like drowning.
"You don't have to prove anything to him, you know that, right?"
"I'm not doing this for him because the past is true. The other past has been eating me since Ashwood's Alpha first told me about the border attacks. That past is all about Kian Voss and the man who broke me five years ago is worth saving.
I cross into Blackthorn but the trees here are the same trees I grew up under, the same moss growing on the north side of the trunks, the same way the wind moves through the branches like it's alive. The ground feels different beneath my boots though, like it remembers me and isn't happy about the return.
The pack house comes into view around the bend, tall and stone-built, lit up gold from every window. I used to think it was the most beautiful building in the world. I spent three years dreaming about living there permanently, about Kian's hand in mine, about a future that got rejected the same moment he did.
Now I just think it's a cage with better lighting.
A guard steps into my path before I've gone ten feet further. Big, built like a wall, scarred across one eyebrow, arms crossed like he's daring me to do anything but comply.
"State your business," he grunts.
"Rhea Sorensen. Ashwood liaison. I believe your Alpha is expecting me." I keep my voice flat, professional, the way I practiced in the mirror for two weeks. Inside, my wolf is pacing, restless, like she smells something she used to know. Like she's woken up from a long sleep and remembered she has claws.
The guard studies me for a moment, then nods and turns to lead me inside. That's when I felt that everything had gone wrong.
A pull, low in my chest, sharp enough that I almost stumble. It's like someone reached into my ribs and yanked something open that I spent five years stitching shut. My wolf goes still and then alert, ears up, the way she used to get around only one person in this world.
,
No it can't be.He can't be here,He's probably in some other pack territory now, living the life he chose over me, mated to someone else, someone the elders approved of, someone born to the right family, someone not broken by rejection.
I follow the guard through the front hall, telling myself it's nerves, it's the smell of home messing with my head, it's anything except what I know it actually is.
Then I see him.
Kian Voss stands at the top of the main staircase, and five years have not been kind to my ability to stay numb around him. He's broader now, harder somewhere deep behind the eyes, dressed in the kind of clothes an Alpha wears, expensive, dark, built to intimidate. He looks like he's been carrying something heavy for a long time and forgot how to set it down.
He looks like he's been suffering.
His gaze finds me and something in his face shifts, just barely, like a man catching a scent he can't identify. I watch his wolf move closer to the surface, watch his hands curl slightly at his sides, and I know that pull I felt wasn't just me.
He felt it too.
My heart is doing something traitorous and loud, and I hate it.
"Ms. Sorensen." His voice hasn't changed and that's the cruelest part but It still sounds like home. "Welcome to Blackthorn."
He doesn't know me. Of course he doesn't. Colored contacts hide my eyes, five years have changed the shape of my face, and the last thing his mind would ever expect is to find the girl he threw away standing in his front hall, dressed in another pack's colors, wearing another woman's name.
"Thank you for having me, Alpha." I make myself say it evenly. I make myself hold his gaze as it costs me nothing. Like my whole body isn't screaming at me to run or to fight or to do something other than stand here pretending to be someone else.
He comes down the stairs slower than a man in a hurry would. When he reaches the bottom step, he stops two feet from me, and I watch his jaw tighten like he's fighting something his own body won't let him control.
"Do I know you?" he asks quietly, and the question lands between us like a blade and that makes my whole body get cold.
"I don't believe so, Alpha." I hold my ground; I've been trained for this moment for five years. I won't break, and also, "I've never been to Blackthorn before."
That is the first lie I tell him,it won't be the last.
He nods slowly, but his eyes don't leave my face, and behind them I can see a wolf just as confused but as alert as mine. The air between us goes heavy, charged, like the sky before a storm. For one long second neither of us breathes right.
Then a voice cuts through the moment, sharp as a blade.
"Alpha one more word now."
I turn to see a woman standing in the hall archway. Older, maybe fifty, dressed in dark green velvet, watching me the way a predator watches wounded prey. Everything about her screams authority and control. I don't know her name yet, but something in my gut tells me this woman is dangerous in a way that has nothing to do with her wolf.
Kian steps back from me, and something in his face closes like a door slamming shut.
"Excuse me," he says, his voice formal now, empty. "Declan will show you to your rooms."
He walks away before I can answer, and I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.
I came here to see for evidence and also to clear my pack's name and walk out with proof that would destroy whoever's been staging attacks on our borders. I came here to be invisible, to do a job, to leave this place the same way I left it five years ago, alone and damaged and asking myself why I wasn't good enough.
I did not come here to feel his eyes on me like that again.
Behind me, the woman in green is still watching. When our eyes meet, she doesn't look away, and there's something in her face that makes my skin crawl.
She knows the w

Kian POV The words hang in the room long after Sable slips into unconsciousness, and I feel the floor tilt under me in a way it hasn't since the night my father died and left this pack in my hands at twenty-two.The true Alpha is coming home."That doesn't make sense," I say, pacing the small healer's room, my mind refusing to settle on any explanation that isn't terrifying. "I am the true Alpha. I've held this title for three years. There's no rival claim, no contested bloodline""Unless there is," Luna says quietly, "and nobody's told you."I stop pacing and look at her. Her face has gone carefully blank, the way it does when she's protecting herself from a thought too painful to let show."Elena," she says. "My mother. If she was your father's sister, and if she had a child before me a child born to carry the Voss bloodline directly instead of hidden away through adoption""Then there could be an older claim to this pack than mine," I finish, the words tasting like poison. "A sibli
Luna POV Sable survives the night, but barely. The pack healer works over her for three hours while Kian and I stand outside the door doing nothing but listening to muffled instructions and the occasional sound of Sable's ragged breathing."This is my fault," Kian says quietly, staring at the closed door. "I should have had guards on her the second Cassia's plot came apart.""You had a burning building and a captured traitor to deal with," I say. "You can't be everywhere.""I'm the Alpha. I'm supposed to protect this pack.""You are protecting this pack," I say, and something in my voice surprises even me, the steady, certain voice of someone who's spent five years learning to fight for things instead of running from them. "You're doing it right now, standing outside this door instead of locking yourself away in guilt."He looks at me, something raw and grateful passing behind his eyes, and for a moment the weight of everything: the fire, Declan's betrayal, the impossible truth abou
Kian POVI watch the color drain out of Luna's face as she reads whatever's written on that paper, and every protective instinct I have surges at once."Luna." I move closer. "What is it?"She doesn't answer right away. Her hands tremble around the paper's edges, her eyes scanning it over and over like she's hoping the words will rearrange themselves into something less impossible."This says my mother wasn't my mother," she finally says, voice barely above a whisper. "It says I was born to someone named Elena Voss."The name lands in the room like a physical blow.Voss. My family's name."That's not possible," I say, though even as the words leave my mouth I feel the ground shifting under everything I thought I understood about my own bloodline. "My father had one sister. She died before I was born. Elena.""Died," Luna repeats hollowly. "Or disappeared, the way everyone assumed I did?"Sable, still standing in the doorway, looks like she might be sick. "My mother kept this hidden fo
Luna POVWe reach the east wing to find flames already climbing the stone walls, smoke pouring black and thick through the hallway I walked twenty-four hours ago looking for proof of exactly this kind of corruption."Water line's this way!" Kian shouts, already tearing his shirt off to wrap around his face. I follow, my lungs burning, my eyes streaming.By the time the fire crew gets it under control, the records room is gutted. Ash where the requisition forms used to sit. Ash where every shred of documented proof against Cassia's network used to exist.Except one thing. The form is still folded inside my boot, where I put it the night I found it. The original evidence. The only piece of paper in this entire pack that hasn't burned.I haven't told anyone that yet. Not even Kian. Some habits from five years of training don't die just because a bond woke back up in my chest. We stand outside the smoking ruin of the east wing as dawn cracks gray over the tree line, both of us soot-streak
Kian POVDeclan's teeth were an inch from Luna's throat when I hit him.I didn't think so. I didn't plan it. My body just moved, and my jaw closed hard around his shoulder, and the two of us went crashing into the council table. Wood cracked under us like dry bone. Somewhere behind me, Cassia was snarling as three younger wolves pinned her against the wall. This was my best friend. The man who taught me how to throw a punch when we were kids. The man who stood next to me the day my father died and told me I could do this, I could lead this pack, I wasn't alone. And right now he was trying to kill the woman I just called my mate in front of the whole council.Luna didn't wait for me to process any of that. She slammed her weight into Declan's side, and I felt him flinch through the bite still locked in my jaw. Blood hit my tongue, hot and metallic. Through the chaos, I felt her sharp, focused, angry and for one strange second in the middle of all this violence, something in my chest se
KIANA POVHer name is Luna.I repeat it in my head like a chant, like if I stop I'll lose her again the way I lost her five years ago.I don't know how I missed it. The eyes, once I looked past the color hiding them. The scent, familiar since the second she crossed my threshold, that I was too much of a coward to name because naming it meant admitting what I did to her. My wolf hadn't settled once since she arrived pacing, restless, already knowing what I refused to.Five years ago I stood in front of my whole pack and rejected the girl the moon herself chose for me. I did it because the elders told me a bond formed at seventeen was weakness, that a future Alpha needed a clear head, that love could wait until I'd proven myself. I believed them because I was scared and young and desperate to be enough. I've spent every year since learning exactly how wrong that was.Now she's back under another name, and Cassia stands before the council like she's already won."Alpha." Cassia doesn't h
