MAYA'S POV

No, no. I try to shake off the thought. Lux properly has no idea of what she's talking about. "How do you know all this?"

"I have connections with underground rumors," she brags and jumps to her feet. "There won't be any classes for the next two days. I better go sleep and recharge my energy. This is the longest break we've ever had."

"So, I won't see you around?"

"Yep. Bye bye!" She shrinks into a tiny...fairy? And flies off.

Holy shit! What is a fae? I take out the vial from

MAYA'S POV After we lock the freed students into a makeshift cage near the sea wall, Morien finds me again. “Let no one see us,” I whisper. He nods as we slip through the classroom wing and toward the abandoned library that's the closest point to the academy’s outer edge. The sea below is boiling red. The vapor rises in thick spirals. It looks alive... And angry. “We could die,” I say quietly. “I know.” “Like… really die.” He turns to me. “If we stay here, we might die. If we go down there, we might die. But if we’re fast enough… we can get the sword and save the academy.” I dragged my hands through my hair. “Oh shit. We’re really doing this.” Morien grins then roars. His body shifts violently. Horns tear through his skull, wings rip from his back, scales flow across his skin and a tail lashes behind him as he fully transforms into his dragon. I climbed onto him. He blasts fire through the library window, and we launch downward. The closer we get to the Red Se

MAYA'S POV I bite my lip, searching for the right words. Morien had told me: sell your vision. But the truth is simpler. “I’ll be honest,” I say, letting my voice carry my conviction. “I am the Hex Queen, and I know there’s something buried under this sea. I can restore this academy to the place you once loved. I know you’re torn between visions, between loyalties, but selling a story is not easy. I might not be perfect for this, but I’ve learned through my mates. And I know you want the best for this place. Give me support, prepare your students, and we can revive this academy.” She studies me, silent, trying to see the truth from the lie. “That’s why I don’t like politics,” I add quickly. “Because promises don’t guarantee results. If I fail, the effort is wasted. I’m not giving you a promise. I just… want your support. A go-ahead. Calm the seas, tell me what’s underneath. I’ll find the sword.” “I want to trust you,” she finally says. “But...”“Don’t trust me. Don’t trust

MAYA'S POV “Summoning?” My mind spins. “There’s something beneath the sea trying to get your attention,” he explains. “How?” “You’re powerful, Maya. The sea, the walls—they all have ears. If they sense you searching for something, they’ll help. They’ll lead you to it.” I swallow. My thoughts flick back to the careless desire to sever the bond that I had made not too long before. “Uh… nothing,” I stammer, changing the topic. I can’t tell him about the star I want to remove, or my plan to find the sword. Not yet. “The sword… do you know where it is?” I ask cautiously. “I don’t,” he admits. “I’ve only heard stories. I haven’t found it either. It could be with Hadies.” “No,” I argue. “If Hadies had it all this time, she would have used it by now.” “Maybe… maybe not,” he paused. “The sword we found in the graveyard? I doubt that was the real one. It could’ve been a replica, or a trick to hide the real sword from us.” I shake my head, completely lost. “Well, there's o

MAYA'S POV “Where are you going?” Lux calls, her voice catching me mid-step as I take a sharp left turn, away from the direction of my room. “I’ll join you guys soon,” I waved her off, my pace quickening. I don’t look back. “Maya!” Morien calls, in a half-chilled, half-concerned tone. I ignored him. My focus is elsewhere. “Maddox, please… don’t call my name,” I murmur under my breath as I hear approaching footsteps, but they fade and retreat in the opposite direction, multiplied in echo and intensity. I need a moment. I need to think. My head is too full; I need to breathe. My pace is erratic. I mutter words to myself as if repeating them enough could ground me: My space… my space… Eventually, I find a corner where I collapsed, sitting down among the heaps of rubble and ashes scattered across the floor. Hugging my knees to my chest, I try to will away the tears. “Don’t cry, Maya. You’re strong. Don’t cry, Maya. You’re beautiful. Don’t cry, Maya. You have people who love

MAYA'S POV I pause, my voice breaking. “I’ve always lost. Never achieved anything great. This… this is my last chance, guys. Don’t you get it? This is bigger than the prophecy. This is my chance to be me.” Morien finally speaks. “We understand you. We really do. This is your story, Maya. We’re just the minions. We’ll do our best to support you.” I let out a small laugh. Jaden brushes a stray hair from my face, tucking it behind my ear. “You should laugh more often. You’re drop-dead gorgeous when you do.” “Don’t flatter me, Jaden,” I teased, laughing and looking away as I jumped down from the bed. I swing my arms into the air, punching playfully. “You want to go for a little gym session?” Maddox grins, stepping closer. “You still got some energy down there?” “Yeah… why not?” I shrug, feeling the adrenaline rising again. Jaden groans suddenly. “Fuck… shit.” “What?” I glance at him. “I don’t know… I just feel this… tug. This connection… with a wolf in this room.” “Wh

MAYA'S POV “Too soon? What do you mean too soon? I didn’t intentionally unlock it. I was trying to save you all and it just— it just happened.” My pulse started racing. “From the book, it says if Hades did it first…” My words tangle together. I can’t seem to breathe right. “If Hades had done it first, and one of you pledged allegiance to her, she would’ve been able to take us all down. That’s why I stepped on it. I didn’t have a choice.” Maddox runs a hand through his hair. “This power you unlocked? It has severe limitations. It will drain you and drain us if you can’t control it…” He doesn’t finish the sentence. “And if I can manage it?” I press. A knock on the door makes all of us flinch. "Who the fuck is knocking right now?" Lux moves first, walking toward the door carefully. She unlocks it slowly. My breath stops as I see selene standing outside the room in a perfect school uniform, not a single wrinkle. Her makeup is flawless, hiding any trace of the bruises from wh
