Chapter Forty

As soon as the elevator was full, Irene flung one last grenade down the corridor before diving in through the closing doors, bullets whizzing past.

The car began its rickety ascent with everyone inside tending to the wounded as best they could. Jocelyn gripped her brother's arm tightly, her face pale.

"That was too damn close..." Michael muttered, catching his breath. He looked at Irene grimly. "What do you think we're going to face when we get up there?"

She shook her head soberly. "I don't know. But it's our only way out now."

The elevator rattled upwards towards an uncertain fate in the main facility above.

Michael and the others gripped their weapons tightly, knowing they would likely face more enemy resistance as soon as the doors opened again.

Jocelyn pressed herself against her brother, her eyes squeezed shut as she tried not to think about the firefights they'd already endured to get this far. Michael gave her hand a reassuring squeeze, his jaw set in determination.
