Chapter Six

Evelyn was surprised and confused. In a space of a few minutes, she had witnessed the most shocking event of her entire life, and now she was about to be killed by a cop.

"I didn't see a thing, please," she begged.

"I am so sorry" he pulled the trigger.

Before the detective shot the gun, Rebecca had pushed open the door, allowing him to miss his target.

"What the hell are you doing, Luke, she's my best friend!" Rebecca shouted at him.

"She saw everything, Becca," he told her.

"Are you sure?"

"Absolutely. You know we can't let her leave here alive."

Rebecca looked at her friend. "Evelyn, is it true" she asked softly.

"I didn't see anything. I swear", Evelyn told her.

"Okay, what are you doing here?"

She said shakily "Rebecca, your dad called. He said he wanted to speak with you and that it was urgent, and so I came to give you your phone."

"...and you didn't see anything?" Rebecca asked.

"Of course she did, Becca. Let me waste her here and now!" The detective shouted as he pointed his gun at Evelyn again.

Rebecca stood between them. "Shut the hell up, Luke. Even if she did see something, I wouldn't ever allow you to hurt her. If you want to kill her, then you would have to go through me."

"Well, if that is how you want it, then..."

Father Leon came out of the morgue and asked the detective" What in God's name is happening here?"

Luke told the priest. " Becca's friend saw everything."

Father Leon looked at Evelyn and saw the fear in her eyes. He told Luke to drop his gun, but the detective protested that he did not trust Evelyn to keep what she had seen a secret.

"She's a member of the Wolf's family now, have you forgotten?" Rebecca told Luke. "If you kill her be sure that they will come for you with everything they've got and there's no way you and your entire family will survive their wrath."

Detective Luke paused for a minute before holstering his gun. "Okay. But if she tells anyone, I'll hold you responsible."

"She won't, I promise" Rebecca reassured

"Okay, let us go, Luke," Father Leon said as he went outside.

Detective Luke glared at Evelyn with a murderous intent. " I will be watching you", he said, just before he left.

Evelyn was devastated, it took a while for her to get herself together." What the hell had just happened?" She thought.

"I am so sorry. I don't know what is wrong with Luke. He is just crazy sometimes", Rebecca told her friend.

"So are you now on a first-name basis with the detective?" Evelyn asked her friend.

"I... The thing is, he's my boyfriend."

"What... Are you kidding me? Why is everyone keeping secrets from me?"

"I am truly sorry. I just didn't want you to be caught up in all this", Rebecca said.

"Apologizing more than once does not always solve problems, Rebecca" Evelyn told her. "I saw you and the priest killing those victims after they miraculously came alive. What was that about?"

"They were not entirely dead before. I saw bite marks on the victims. That was why I called Father Leon and my boyfriend..."

Evelyn interrupted "What do you mean bite marks?"

"...I mean they were no longer humans. They had been turned into monsters".

"Now you are confusing me here. What do you mean they were no longer humans?"

"They died with cursed blood in their system, and so they became cursed beings. Father Leon and I had to put them down before they killed or, worse, turned others", Rebecca told her." These cursed beings are Vampires."

"Vampires? How is that possible? Those things are not real, they are just made-up stories to scare people."

"Well, they are truly real. Come let me show you " Rebecca took her friend inside the morgue.

"Here, take a closer look at their teeth," she told her friend to check.

Evelyn looked at their bodies up close and noticed how their bodies looked desiccated as if they had been dead for several years and not a few hours. She opened their mouths one after the other and noticed the dead victims had fangs.

"My God, I still can't believe this," she said in amazement. "What did Father Leon sprinkle on them?"

"Oh, that was vervain. It weakens them."

"...but they were both declared dead in the OR before being brought to the morgue," Evelyn said

Rebecca held her shoulder to comfort her, but Evelyn pulled away from her.

"Don't you dare touch me? You've been lying to me our entire lives"

"I could not tell you because I wanted to protect you", Rebecca told her.

"Protect me!?" Evelyn yelled at her. "How is being oblivious to the fact that monsters are living among us protecting me?"

"You don't understand. All my life I have lived in constant fear of creatures lurking in the dark. Although we were both told about the stories of all these monsters as children, it wasn't just a story to me. It was a reality. I just didn't want you to live your life in constant fear," Rebecca said.

"I don't know what to say," Evelyn told her. " I still can't wrap my head around the fact that these creatures are real."

"I can understand, " Rebecca said

Evelyn took out her phone to take pictures of the desiccated bodies but was stopped by her friend.

Rebecca took the phone from Evelyn. " You should not be taking pictures. This is a secret meant to be kept hidden from humans and taking pictures is not safe". She gave Evelyn back her phone.

" Are vampires the only creatures hidden from humans?" She asked Rebecca after putting back her phone into her bag.

"No Evelyn"

"Then what else?"

"I can't say. I am sorry"

Evelyn sighed "Why can't you say? Tell me, Rebecca!" She yelled.

"I really shouldn't be telling you anything until after the ritual". Rebecca slipped

"What do you mean after the ritual?"

"You need to ask Michael about it. It's not in my place to go into details, but just ask him". Rebecca told her "I need to get going. It seems like my father wants to see me urgently."

"Is Michael aware?"

Rebecca paused for a while before answering. "I can't say."

Evelyn left her friend angrily in the morgue, took the elevator to her office to change, and headed out of the hospital since her shift was already over. She walked out of the hospital to find that it was dark already. She checked her watch and saw that the time was 5 pm.

Evelyn walked to the hospital's parking lot hoping to see Michael parked there, but he wasn't around. A few minutes later, she saw him drive into the hospital compound and waited for the car to get to her side.

"Hi love, how was work today?" Michael asked as he pulled over to where she was standing.

Evelyn snubbed him and entered the backseat of the car.

Michael was beginning to worry a little about the awkward silence in the car. He looked at the rearview mirror several times to try and catch her gaze, but she just stared out the window throughout the drive to the hotel.

Immediately they arrived at the hotel, Evelyn went up to their suite without saying a word, leaving Michael to wonder if she was still angry at him for not telling her about his secrets.

"Evelyn, we need to talk", Michael told her as he sat next to her on the bed.

"About what?" She asked.

"Well, about what we spoke about earlier today."

"I am listening"

Michael sighed and took out a drink from the top drawer next to the bed. "Where do I begin?" He asked himself as he poured a drink for himself and Evelyn.

"I am not who you think I am" he continued as he sipped the drink.

"Are you human? She asked frighteningly.

"I ..." He hesitated.

"Are you a vampire?" Evelyn interrupted.

"No, of course not" he looked at Evelyn to see if she was joking, but saw that she wasn't. " How do you know about vampires?"

"It's a long story. Just answer my question. Who are you truly?"

"I know this might be hard to take in, but I want to let you know that I would never do anything to hurt you," he told Evelyn as he held her hands.

She stood up from the bed and moved away from him a little towards the door. " What are you, Michael!?" She shouted.

"I am a werewolf" he answered.
