Chapter 21

ANGIE’S DAD POV

The morning was quiet, just the way I liked it. The sunlight filtered in through the curtains of my kitchen, casting long stripes of gold across the countertop. I sat at the table, nursing a warm cup of coffee, watching the steam curl upward.

It used to be noisier here. Years ago, when Angie was still a little girl running around in her socks, leaving trails of laughter and spilled juice behind her. Now, she was grown. Married. Famous. Everything I had hoped she would become, and yet…

Sometimes, I still missed the days when she’d climb onto my lap and fall asleep mid-sentence.

I took a slow sip and leaned back, letting the silence settle around me. It was one of those mornings where memories felt closer than usual. Her mother would’ve loved this Angie; strong, talented, passionate. And complicated, too, but in the best ways.

She always had a fire in her, even when she was small. A stubborn streak that reminded me of her mother. But that same fire is what ca

I stood in front of the full-length mirror, barely able to believe the reflection staring back at me. The wedding dress was perfect. White and flowing, with delicate lace patterns wrapping around the bodice. It hugged my body just right. I looked like a princess. A bride. My heart fluttered in my chest. This was it. The day I had been waiting for. A tear pricked my eye, but I quickly blinked it away before it could ruin my makeup. If only Mom could see me now, I thought. I took a deep breath. And a soft smile formed on my lips. Mom would have loved Giovanni. He was charming, handsome, and always made me feel special. Every love song I wrote was inspired by him. Today, I was finally becoming his forever. The dressing room door swung open, and Rachel, my stylist, walked in, gasping dramatically. “Angie, oh my God.” I turned to her, laughing. “Is it too much?” “Too much? Girl, you look like a dream.” She stepped closer, adjusting my veil, her eyes shining with excit

The air hit my face as we pushed through the stadium doors. My feet ached from running, but I didn’t stop. I didn’t want to stop. The man walked beside me, silent, his steps steady. His presence was strangely comforting. We reached a sleek black car parked near the exit. He pulled open the door. “Get in.” I hesitated. “I don’t even know your name.” He tilted his head slightly. “And yet, you kissed me, and asked me to take you home” My face burned. “I… I wasn’t thinking.” His lips twitched in amusement, but his eyes remained unreadable. “Angie, right?” I frowned. “How do you know?” He gave a small chuckle. “Everyone knows.” Right. I was Angie Harper, the pop sensation. The girl whose wedding just turned into a national scandal. Tears pricked my eyes again, but I blinked them away. “You’re not going back in there, are you?” he asked. I swallowed hard, shaking my head. “No… please just take me away from here to an hotel or something.” “Then get in.” Something about h

The hotel room was quiet, too quiet. I groaned, rubbing my head as the pounding in my head made it impossible for me to think straight. My mouth was dry, my body sore, and then it hit me; Yesterday.Glovanni. Reed. I turned my head slowly. He was still asleep, his breathing steady, his face was calm. My heart raced, I looked my phone buzzing on the nightstand. I grabbed it, my eyes widened at the screen. There were dozens of missed calls, from Michelle and my dad. I panicked. I barely had time to think. My wedding disaster was probably all over the news, they must be worried sick. My fingers trembled as I clutched the phone. I couldn’t deal with this right now. I needed to go. I glanced at Reed one last time. He had given me an escape, a moment to breathe. I owed him at least a thank you. Grabbing a hotel notepad, I scribbled a quick note: Thank you for last night. I hesitated, then added, Take care. Setting the note on the nightstand, my eyes landed on his shirt plac

I rushed back to the hotel, my heart was pounding. My hands shook as I knocked on the door of the room where I had left Reed. No answer. I knocked again, harder this time. Nothing. “Excuse me,” I called out to a passing housekeeper. “The man who was staying in this room, do you know where he went?” She gave me a polite but unhelpful smile. “I believe he checked out early this morning, miss.” Checked out. He was gone. I didn’t even know his last name, I thought. Just Reed. Just a stranger who had been there when I needed someone the most. And now he was gone. Tears burned my eyes as I turned away, feeling more lost than ever. I had no choice but to go back home, to face my reality. Back at the house, I shut the door behind me and leaned against it, exhaling shakily. I made it to my bedroom before I collapsed onto my bed, crying into my pillow. Everything hurts. Giovanni’s betrayal, the humiliation, the fact that I had kissed a stranger on live television. And now, I had

Chapter FiveI sat on the bed in my dressing room, staring at my wedding dress. My fingers traced the delicate lace, but I felt nothing. This wasn’t how I imagined my wedding day. I was supposed to be marrying Giovanni, the love of my life. Not a stranger. Not Reed. The weight of everything pressed down on my chest. I hadn’t spoken to Reed much since the press conference. Everything moved too fast. The contract. The media. The fake love story. Now, I was about to walk down the aisle and marry a man I barely knew. A knock at the door. "Angie?" It was Mitchell’s voice. “Come in,” I said softly. She stepped inside, looking beautiful in her bridesmaid dress. Her eyes softened when she saw me. “You okay?” I shook my head. “Mitchell, I can’t do this.” She sighed, sitting beside me. “Angie…” “This isn’t what I wanted.” My voice cracked. “I never thought my life would turn out this way.” Mitchell took my hands. “I know this is hard. But it’s only for a while. A year, an

The days after the wedding passed slowly. Reed barely spoke to me. He was polite when he had to be, but that was it. No jokes, no smiles, no warmth. Just silence. I tried to act normal at first. I made breakfast once. He didn’t eat it. Just said he wasn’t hungry. I left music playing in the background to ease the silence. He turned it off. He wasn’t mean. Just… distant. Cold. I didn’t understand what I had done. I thought we were starting to get along. The pancakes, the small talks. Then, boom; nothing. Now, he came home late. He took calls in the bedroom with the door locked. He would whisper into the phone and hang up quickly whenever I got close. I tried not to care. I reminded myself it was all fake. Just a contract. A lie to protect my image. But it still hurt. One night, I curled up on the couch, scrolling through old photos on my phone. Me and Giovanni. Smiling at the beach. Laughing at some awards show. God, I used to be so happy. Now, I lived with a st

Few weeks and the lights were back. The cameras, the crowd, the pressure; it was all here again. But this time, it wasn’t a wedding. It was my concert. The one that was supposed to happen months ago. The one that got ruined. I had agreed to do a special show something intimate, small, just for my fans. A way to reclaim my story, to take control. Michelle called it a “healing performance.” I called it terrifying. The stage was smaller, the audience limited, but the world was still watching. My name was everywhere. Not for my music, but for the scandal. And now I was standing backstage, wearing a silver dress and holding a mic with shaky hands. Reed stood beside me. Dressed in black, as usual. Calm, as usual. “You okay?” he asked quietly. I nodded too fast. “Yeah.” He didn’t believe me, I could tell. But he didn’t press. Instead, he reached for my hand. His fingers were warm. Strong. I looked at him, surprised. “You’re not alone out there,” he said.

Giovanni was still texting me. Every single day. “Please, Angie. Talk to me.” “I miss you.” “I know I messed up, but I still love you.” I ignored them all. I tried to move on, but every time his name popped up on my screen, something twisted in my chest. Reed saw the texts once. I noticed the way his jaw tightened, but he didn’t say anything. He never did. That was the thing about him; he saw everything but kept it all inside. We were doing okay. Some days we laughed. We shared meals. We even binge-watched a crime show one night. It felt… normal. But then, there were days he’d go cold again. Distant. He would answer with one-word replies or disappear for hours. When he was kind, it was easy to pretend we were real. When he was cold, I reminded myself it was all fake. Still, I didn’t ask questions. I didn’t ask why he left at night. I didn’t ask who was always calling him. I didn’t ask what he was hiding. Because I wasn’t sure I was ready to hear the truth. My career w

We’d only been seeing each other for a few weeks, but he had this charm that made everything feel… easy.He made me laugh. He listened when I rambled. And for once, I didn’t feel like I had to be anyone but myself.Maybe that’s why I was nervous about tonight. He had invited me over to his place. Not a club. Not a fancy restaurant. Just his place. He said he wanted to cook.I didn’t expect that from him. The Ian I met at the bar that night felt like the type who’d order everything on the menu and leave a ridiculous tip just to impress me. But this version of him…the quiet one who texted me things like “thinking about you” in the middle of the day…this was the one I was starting to like.Too much, maybe.I wore something simple. Chapter 19Angie’s POVThe flight back to New York felt like a blur. My mind was still on the concert, the excitement, the roar of the crowd, and the thrill of being on stage. It had been everything I had hoped for, and more. But even with all the success, all the praise, I couldn’t shake the feeling of something missing. The spotlight was bright, and the energy was electric, but as the last note echoed through the stadium, it hit me.I wanted Reed there. The thought was sudden and unexpected. I had been focused on my career, pushing forward without thinking too much about the people around me. But now, as I sat on the plane, I realized that his absence felt like a hole in my heart. I spent the flight replaying the last few days in my mind. I’d been trying to push away the growing doubts about us, about him. Reed had been distant, and even though he texted, the messages were always short, too polite. He hadn’t been there when I needed him the most…when the press was hounding me,

Chapter 18Reed’s POVThe next few days passed by in a blur. I returned to Angie.Angie was getting ready for the big concert, the one I knew she had been working toward for months. The excitement in her eyes was contagious, even though part of me hated the thought of her being away. But I knew it was important for her…this was her moment.I tried to stay focused on the tasks I had to take care of for the family business. But all I could think about was her.She left early that morning, and we shared a brief kiss before she went to the airport. There was something about the way she kissed me…soft, lingering, like she wasn’t sure when she’d see me again. It made my heart race, and the ache of knowing I couldn’t tell her the truth about myself felt like a weight on my chest.“I’ll call you when I land,” she said, looking at me with those big, hopeful eyes. “I’ll miss you.”“I’ll miss you too,” I said, though I couldn’t shake the thought of the lies I was still carrying. After she

The room was still dim, with only the morning light peeking through the curtains. I didn’t move. I didn’t want to disturb her. I just lay there, listening to her breathe, wondering if this was the calm before the storm.I had kissed her last night, really kissed her. And for the first time in a long time, I allowed myself to believe that maybe… just maybe… things could be real between us.But I knew better than to let my guard down completely.I glanced at the clock. It was still early, but I knew I couldn’t stay here much longer. I had work to do… business to take care of. Things that didn’t involve her, even though I wished they did.I quietly slipped out of bed and walked to the bathroom, trying not to wake her. The cool tile on my feet felt like a wake-up call. The reality of what I had to do kept pressing on me. I ran my hand through my hair, staring

But just knowing Reed had written it… knowing he cared enough to say something, that was enough to make my heart soften again. I walked downstairs slowly, unsure if he was home. The lights in the living room were on. And there he was, sitting on the couch, elbows on his knees, staring at the floor. When he heard my footsteps, he looked up.Our eyes met.For a moment, neither of us said anything. Then I walked over and sat beside him, the note still in my hand.“I got this,” I said softly. He nodded. “I figured.”I studied his face. He looked tired and sad. The walls were down, even if just a little.“I don’t need you to tell me everything tonight,” I whispered. “But I need to know that I matter. That we matter.”“You do,” he said without hesitation. My heart clenched. He reached for my hand. “I’ve been cold and distant. It wasn’t fair to you.

When I opened it, I froze.“Dad?”He smiled, holding a paper bag. “I brought your favorite. Tuna melt from Carson’s.”I stepped aside. “Come in.”He walked inside like he owned the place…which, technically, he did. The apartment was his wedding gift to us. At the time, it felt like a fresh start. Now it just felt like another place I was slowly falling apart in.We sat in the kitchen. I opened the bag, but my appetite was gone.“You haven’t been eating,” he said, watching me closely.“I’m fine.”“No, you’re not.”I looked down.“Is it Reed?”I nodded slowly. My dad sighed. “Tell me what happened.”“It’s complicated.”“So explain it to me.”I picked at the bread crust, trying to find the words.“He saw Giovanni kiss me.”My dad raised an eyebrow. “What?”“It wasn’t planned,” I sai
