Ann’s POV

A phone ringing broke the cold stare I and Jake were giving each other. I still didn't know why those words left my lips but I knew I wasn't ready to give up on Jake. I loved him with all of my being.

Jake’s scowl deepened when he checked the caller on his phone and answered the call.

I didn't know who it was but with the look on Jake's phone and his next line of action I got to understand who the caller was.

“Ann, my dearest!” Mrs Laurent, Jake's mom's voice, spoke excitedly through the phone’s speaker.

“Yes mum. I’m here,” I answered. She seemed so excited to speak to me and I wondered if Jake had told her about this new development.

“We are having a party tonight and of course I want to show off my beautiful daughter so make sure you do well to come with your husband. You both should come and steal the spotlight,” Mrs Laurent said giggling again. 

She had always been this carefree and joyful. I couldn't help myself and ended up chuckling.

“That’s a yes then, right?” Mrs Laurent said, clapping her hands. I could imagine her doing her twirling dance. She was fond of that whenever she was excited.

“Well…mom…we….,” I was having it hard to even speak my mind when Jake suddenly pulled the phone away.

“We will be there. What time?” Jake asked.

“By 7pm. Be early. Love you son.” She said and with that hung up.

“Why did you do that?”

“What were you about to say?”

Our questions were out of our lips in an instant.

“Didn't you tell your parents you were going to divorce me?” I asked him in a sarcastic tone.

“What does our divorce have to do with our parents?” Jake asked me and I gave him a dumb look.

He fidgeted. He also knew very well that the question he just asked was the dumbest question ever.

“You tell me. I was about to tell her but you literally pulled the phone away.” 

My eyes roamed his face but he kept on with his defensive look. He honestly looked like a child who was determined to have his way, whether the parents liked it or not.

“I would tell them at my own time,” Jake said, sounding defensive.

I shook my head and made my way out of the room without a word with my mind reeling.

His parents had no idea about him planning to divorce me. I saw that as a light and stray of hope I was going to hold on to.

I just needed to carve out the right plans to save my marriage. I also needed to find out who this unknown girl was.

“Don't tell me you plan on spilling at the party?” Jake asked me, he sounded and looked apprehensive as he came after me.

“Would that not be the best option?” I said to him without even glancing back as I entered our bedroom.

I needed to freshen up so I could make breakfast.

“You are not to say a word,” Jake’s cold tone once again made me turn to look at him.

“Families brought us together and I totally agree that they should also be involved if you are thinking of divorcing me,” I said, emphasizing on the pronoun “you”.

“And they would be!” He snapped. He was clearly getting irritated now.

“Then I guess I would wait till when both families have come to a conclusion before I would be thinking of signing any papers,” I told him, stating my mind firmly.

Jake's hands immediately swept through his curly hair. He was annoyed. I could tell from his behaviour and mood.

I was about to say something but totally changed my mind as I went into the bathroom.

I guessed he didn't expect this turn of event. He seemed so annoyed. I tried doing things in the bathroom so as to not make it too obvious that I was indeed trying to figure out what he was up to from inside the bathroom.

I heard the loud bang of our room door and I let out a sigh. He was probably going to his other woman. I freshened up and got dressed in a flowery patterned body fitted gown.

I wasn't planning on leaving the house today but I knew I could end up doing so because I honestly needed to speak to someone and the best person would be my best friend, Jane.

Although I had two best friends, Jane and Claire, Jane had been with me since childhood. We had both met Claire at high school and the three of us immediately became best buddies.

The smell of toast bread hit my nostrils as I made my way down the stairs. I smiled. It simply meant my husband was still at home with me.

I got to the kitchen and was about to make my own breakfast when Jake's order stopped me in my tracks.

“Sit!”

I was immediately shocked at this and even became confused when he placed a cup of creamy coffee and toast in front of me.I gave him a scared look.

Jake's laughter filled the dining table which was quite close to the kitchen.

“I won't go extreme Ann,” 

“In all of our years of marriage, this is the first time you do this,” I said to him as I looked from the food he placed in front of me to his face.

Jake sat down opposite me and began devouring his food while I continued looking at him.

“What is the meaning of this? There has to be a reason for this Jake,” I said as the feeling of apprehension seemed to be taking over me gradually.

“You could take this as a farewell breakfast,” Jake said flatly.

He seemed to be bored by my expression and wasn’t planning on saying anything further.

I had no other option but to begin eating my breakfast. Gosh! It tasted heavenly!

I could help myself but moan out of pleasure as I savoured the taste of the toasted bread and egg. I wondered if it really did taste good or I was just overjoyed at the fact that Jake made breakfast. I finally concluded that it was the latter.

“I will let my parents know this evening,”

The cup of creamy coffee fell from my hands immediately as I shot Jake a surprised look.
