CHAPTER 25DAX’S POVI was nervous, I wouldn't deny it. My heart kept pulsating as my hands trembled while I waited for Ruby to show up. So I tucked my hands into my pockets and paced back and forth inside the waiting room in an attempt to calm myself down.I did a little shopping myself too, just to look good for Ruby so she wouldn't get distracted by any other man while we were out on our date. I wanted her eyes on only me so I had to look the part.Ruby’s shopping and makeover had taken hours and now, it was already dark which meant we were going to be just in time for our date and I wondered probably for the millionth time, if she would like the way I had it all planned out.Someone knocked on the door to the waiting room and it was pushed open the moment I turned to look.I was lost for words when I saw Ruby and it was a struggle, searching for the perfect word to describe how stunning she looked. Thin tendrils of her hair graced the sides of her face in wavy curls while the res
CHAPTER 26RUBY’S POVDax was teasing me again. He didn't have to place his finger against my lips to shush me up but he did, was it when he playfully threaded his fingers across my back, Or when he pushed my hair back even though he didn't have to?He was clearly teasing me and it greatly affected me too. I took a look at him as he sat across from me in the backseat while Simon drove and he looked at me too before I could look away.“Is something wrong?” he asked softly, his deep voice washing over me and gracing my skin with goosebumps while he wrapped his hand around my fingers and gently squeezed.I shook my head and looked out the window before I got lost in his eyes while he kept on playing with my fingers, probably in an attempt to calm me down.“I'm fine. I'm just curious to know where we are heading” I replied while I stole a glance back at him only to see him smiling to himself.“I know you're not telling so I won't ask,” I told him and he scooted closer to me in the car th
CHAPTER 27RUBY’S POVDax didn’t say a single word to me all through the drive home and when Simon finally arrived at my driveway, I moved to get out of the car and Dax held my hand. I looked at him and he stared at me with pleading eyes without saying anything.Still feeling numb and finding it hard to trust him at the moment, I pulled my hand out of his without uttering a word and opened the door then I got out and walked toward my porch with shaky legs and a subsiding panic attack.I got to the front door before Simon drove into their driveway and that was when the dam broke. The tears fell in torrent and I heaved hard while a hole caved its way in my heart and the numbness faded. Even after dumping me, everything Dax did still hurt me.Why did it have to happen on a night that I was on a date with him? Why did it have to be Dax? Why him all the time? I fell to my knees and clutched onto my chest in an attempt to ease the ache I felt but nothing happened and it even hurt more pain
CHAPTER 28RUBY’S POVIt was still so early in the morning and my phone was ringing out loud nonstop. I reached for it with sleepy eyes and without looking at the caller ID, I picked the call up and placed it against my ear.“Hello?” I spoke with a croaky voice and I heard a snicker from the other side.“Why are there so many pictures of you and Dax splashed across so many media outlets and I haven't heard anything from you yet, Ruby? Were you both on a date?” Dennis’s voice came through and what he just said woke me up immediately and I quickly sat up in bed.“What? Wait a minute. What pictures are you talking about?” I asked him while trying to make sense of what he just said and he chuckled.“Do you mean you have no idea that there are pictures of you and Dax all over the internet? Aren’t you both back together already? Don’t mess this deal up for me, Ruby” he fired more questions that made me even more confused and I got down from my bed.“You know what, Dennis? Why don’t I call yo
CHAPTER 29RUBY’S POV“Are you alright? I came to check up on you” Dax asked me once I opened the door and our eyes met and I nodded in response before letting him and Simon in. Then I walked over to a chair and sat down before urging them to sit too. They did and we all remained silent for a while as I avoided Dax’s stare. It felt like he was looking into my soul and it felt weird to have him worry about me. I had been fine for eight years without him so I didn’t want his worry now. He could keep it to himself.“Ruby, I…” he was about to speak when I held my hand up to stop him and he ceased talking.“I know what you’re about to talk about but Sally is home and I don’t want her to know anything about what is going on. She’s too young so we can talk after she’s gone to school” I told him and he understood immediately so he nodded and sat back in the chair he occupied.I watched him as he shifted his hips and left his legs apart while he sat and I felt my throat go dry as I ogled him s
CHAPTER 30RUBY’S POVSally finally left for school after I was able to stop her from talking about Dax liking me but Dax still had a smile on his face even after she was gone. I could tell he was thinking about what Sally said and I hoped he wouldn't question me about it.Breakfast was finally ready and we all sat at the dining table to eat in silence but I could still sense the chemistry flowing between Clarissa and Simon whenever they spoke, made eye contact, or mistakenly brushed hands when they reached for something on the table. So I used them as a means of distraction to ignore Dax who was right beside me because I knew that once this breakfast was over, we were going to talk about the unavoidable and we were either going to find a solution or end up fighting.I had a feeling that we would most likely end up fighting considering the question I had in mind for Dax but who knew? Maybe he wouldn’t fight with me as I expected. We finished eating and I packed the dirty dishes along
CHAPTER 313RD POVClarissa and Simon sat in silence in the living room while they listened to Ruby and Dax go at each other, their voices and their temper evident in the tone they used to speak to each other.Simon stirred in his chair while Clarissa sighed as she typed away on the laptop she placed on her thighs and she looked up to glance at Simon just at the same time he did. They quickly looked away from each other before she chuckled to herself and looked back at him.“This is awkward” she commented and he nodded in agreement. It was weird enough having to listen to Ruby and Dax argue but sitting in silence was unbearable. He had to strike up a conversation. “So what are you up to? I noticed you've been typing away with top concentration so it must be something serious” he asked curiously and he watched her smile while she shrugged.“nothing serious. Just writing up a final list of the stuff and Ingredients I'll need for the cafe I'm about to open” she replied and he leaned for
CHAPTER 32DAX’S POVFuming hard as I walked out of Ruby’s house with Simon on my trail, my blood boiled with anger, I itched to smash my fist into something and relish in the pain it would bring to my knuckles but at the same time, I wanted to walk back in and tell Ruby that I would never do such a thing to her again.I was mad and disappointed though, at the fact that Ruby suspected me all along even after I told her I could never do such. It hurt to know she didn't trust me or whatever I said but then I couldn't blame her either.I hurt her, ruined her reputation in New York, and made her start her life all over in a new country where she knew no one except Clarissa. So I wouldn't exactly put it all on her if she didn't trust me yet. I caused it all and I guessed it was time for me to pay back, no matter how infuriating some situations may be.I walked into my house and Simon closed the door gently while I stormed over to the bar and blindly poured myself a drink to quench the burn
