Prologue
November 8, 1853
Fara Bellamont stepped away from the bay window overlooking the harbor. She didn't want to move; she would miss her home too much. The view of the waves rocking against the hulls of the ships in the harbor had calmed her restless soul on many sleepless nights. There was something about the greenish hue of the ocean and its gentle sway which drew her to it. It was a sight she welcomed but was not exactly in her blood. Her parents' home was but a carriage ride away from port. Her father was a businessman who had acquired many connections with the trades' captains.
Even the sea's lullaby couldn’t calm the uncertain waters ahead. With a heavy sigh she crossed the room to the trunk in the middle of her chamber. She lifted the lid and kneeled, gently probing the yards of soft, blue velvet. It was her mother's gown from the night her parents had met. They had been united by her mother’s season celebration in Marseille. A woman's first introduction into society wasn’t supposed to result in a love match, only certain options. A potential husband would’ve come in time when her mother had been to numerous parties and such. But André Bellamont had been the luckiest suitor in the crowd. Fara heard the story many times. Her parents often reflected on it, and she herself tended to beg them to tell her how they'd met time and time again. Nothing could’ve prevented their union. They had fallen in love despite her grandparents' insistence that Annabelle D'Aubigne was too young to be tied down.
Fara's throat tightened with emotion as she touched the portrait of her parents, which was rolled securely for safe storage. A sense of loss overcame her. It seemed like a lifetime ago when they had left her in the care of Rosalie, her nursemaid, so that her father could finish a business agreement. Obligation had required him to travel overseas, and her mother refused to be left behind.
Though she loved them both dearly, she often wondered what might’ve happened if her mother had decided to stay at home. Perhaps Turkish pirates would not have overtaken the ship. André and Annabelle would still be alive. Squeezing her eyes shut, her shoulders shook silently with grief. She clenched her jaw on the ache of tears. No, she couldn’t allow herself to accept it yet. There was still much to be done.
Glancing up, she caught her reflection in the mirror propped up against a wall. Wearing a pure white muslin gown, she looked little more than a limp waif in laced-up boots. Nearly the ripe age of nine, she wished she was much older—at least old enough to object to her parents' silly will. Or old enough to tear down the pale sheets enveloping the furniture in the house. It looked like a place for ghosts, not lively people. The house was dead, empty; much like her heart.
Now she was to prepare for a new life, transported to a stranger's home where her days would pass slowly, one just as grim as the next, she feared. She’d heard rumors of her uncle's disposition. She had never met him, but her parents hadn’t wanted her to be around him.
She remembered one evening when she was supposed to be in bed, and she heard raised voices downstairs. Fara had crept out of her room, careful to avoid disturbing her nursemaid, and knelt at the posts on the balcony.
Her father shook his head. “He is family.”
“So, he is. But I will not have him within the vicinity of our daughter.” This came from her mother, still as beautiful as ever in a pale blue gown.
“And why not?”
“You see the way he has treated me. He obviously doesn’t like women. How can we know he won't treat Fara the same?”
Papa muttered something incoherent. “He is my brother. I cannot think he would shun her.”
“Did I say that? But he is a harsh man, love. Not the sort of man you would want around your child.”
He nodded. “Perhaps you're right. In any case, it hardly matters. We live here in Marseille, and he is in La Rochelle. And he could hardly wish to visit.” He sighed. “But if anything were to happen to us, who do you imagine would care for her?”
“Lina?”
“Lina has her own life. Besides, society would hardly accept that.”
“She’ll be married soon. Why not? Perhaps her husband would be all right with that sort of arrangement.”
“It is hardly likely. It makes sense to leave her to Michel.”
Her mother clenched her fists. “Not whilst I am living will I expose her to that wretched man.” Then she stormed out of the room.
Papa stared after her. “Chére, wait!” And he followed her mother shortly.
Fara rose slowly, frowning, and then went back to her bedroom.
The scene had made little sense to her at the time, but she wondered if her mother's claims were at all true. Could it be possible? Had her parents kept her away from her uncle for a reason? Because he didn’t like children?
Fara shuddered. She did not wish to live with such a man.
“Mademoiselle!” Rosalie rushed into the room now, fussing over Fara's auburn tresses and straightening her gown. “We must ready you for the trip.”
“When is he coming?”
“Monsieur Bellamont will be here shortly.”
“He has traveled so far.”
“You are family, though.”
“Does that matter to someone like him?”
Rosalie frowned. “You mustn’t say those things in public. Someone will hear you and believe you are not a lady.”
“Am I, Rosalie?”
“What, Mademoiselle?”
“A lady.”
Her nursemaid smiled with a slow spread across her features. “You will be one day, Fara.” She kneeled before her young charge and re-laced her boots. “Come. You shouldn’t keep your uncle waiting.”
“Is he as bad as they say?”
“Hush. All will be better soon, I promise.” She began to usher her out of the room.
“Wait!”
Fara sidestepped Rosalie and ran to the bay window, taking in the view she was sure she'd never see again. She grabbed a gold locket and chain from a nearby table, and then joined Rosalie at the door. As they trekked down the stairs, her breath caught in her throat.
Conclusion and Back MatterUpon Your Return - Episode 54***When she came to, Fara was annoyed by the bright light above her. Her vision gradually came into focus and she noted that she was in the cabin, tucked away in Grant's bed. She lifted the sheet from her naked body to peer at the bandage covering her upper thigh. It felt binding, but she had no doubt of the doctor's expertise. Besides, it was a mere surface wound from a dagger. She sighed and nestled deeper within the bedclothes. Fara glanced around the cabin to find Grant's long form upon the settee and she smiled. He was magnificent, even in sleep. When he stretched while dreaming, a shirt button came undone to reveal a cord of muscle with a light covering of hair. She longed to reach out and touch him. She was too familiar with his body. It was a wonder she hadn't forgotten anything about him in four years’ time. A knock came at the door. Fara cleared her throat. “Entré!”Eric appeared in the doorway. “Petite!” he exclaime
The World Is WrongUpon Your Return - Episode 53***Grant grimaced. That took care of part of the problem, but he’d have to worry about what Nicholas was capable of, and as far as he knew, there were no limits. As the men cut his bonds, he swung around and deftly took one man's rapier while leaving him with a bloody nose. Knowing he was no match for a pistol, he ran behind a vendor cart, ducking to avoid the shot.“You will pay for that.”The man whose nose was bloodied stood in front of him. He was either mad or stupid for he carried no other weapon. Another shot rang out and a bloodstain on the man's shirt appeared and rapidly grew. He fell to the ground.Grant shook his head in disbelief and ducked down. For a man to kill his own comrade was serious business. If he didn't find some way to gain an advantage he'd end up the same, with a hole through the center of his chest. No doubt, at this very moment the ruffian hurried to ready his pistol.Grant heard cautious footsteps approac
The Monster Behind the ManUpon Your Return - Episode 52“I broke his heart, did I? He doesn't have one or he wouldn't have taken my son. More or less when I refused him, I merely bruised his precious ego! Damn him!” she shouted back. The man approached her and with a grip on her waist, he directed her to the door and pushed her through with a hand at the small of her back. “Oui,” he muttered. “Perhaps you will have enough courage to say that to my employer's face!”“Gladly!” she countered and gasped as his arm snaked around her neck. She wondered why this man was so quick to defend Nicholas when there was only money at stake. She frowned as he directed her down the stairs to meet his accomplice.***Grant veered to miss a street vendor who was closing for the night. He hugged his thighs close to the destrier to pick up speed. His breath came in gasps, labored from a panicked state he'd never experienced before. From his belly, he felt a series of knots from what he assumed to be anx
The Enemy Has ArrivedUpon Your Return - Episode 51There was no reason to think their intruders were out to do them harm, but anything was possible. And he seemed to be taking it as something graver than the simple prospect of being discovered by her aunt.“Grant,” she whispered, suddenly fearful for their shared predicament. “It's…” she began, but then realized he was merely going with instinct.“Don't fight me this time, chère.” He placed a quick kiss on her lips. “Just do what I say. Clothe yourself as fast as possible and we'll soon find out the identity of our intruders.”He rolled from her and yanked his slacks from the vanity nearby.Fara reached for her chemise and corset, without bothering to tighten the laces, and quickly pulled on her dress over them. All of these tasks would normally be done by her nursemaid, but there was no time for that. She abandoned her stockings and jammed her feet into her slippers. When she straightened, she saw that Grant was fully dressed and un
Another Passionate OperaUpon Your Return - Episode 50(CONTENT WARNING: Look out for a sex scene in this episode. It is not a closed door scene, so if steamy scenes offend you, perhaps you should skip ahead slightly.)***A week later Fara glanced over the newspaper in the library and read of an opera playing in town, Gounod's La reine de Saba, which was about a tragedy based loosely on the Christian story of King Solomon. Beseeching to Grant, they made plans to attend that evening. Fara prepared herself by consulting with Lina and Rosalie on what to wear while Grant went to purchase the tickets and prepared Pierre to drive them. For the event, Fara dressed in a gown of light blue muslin and ivory trim with blue pins entwined into her done-up tresses. She took Grant's arm as she came down the stairs from her room. Grant, as well, was splendidly dressed in a black suit with a white silk cravat about his neck. Her aunt and Gabe looked on with interest and pride as they left the house.
A Question of LoyaltyUpon Your Return - Episode 49He grimaced and stopped himself before he swore. Daughters of joy were a step higher than prostitutes, but not far removed from the social repugnance that was attached to them. Even mistresses weren't respectable, though it was no secret many gentlemen had them.“I hate to think that you’ve been in such a place.”“Oui, for a mere five minutes.”“And you were exposed to the intimacy between men and women long before we were together in that way.”She nodded. “Exposed, but not involved. I was disgusted by the display Monsieur Bordeaux put on in that room. Mon Dieu,” Fara said on a breath, and she tapped his sleeve. “There were other women watching them, too.” She wrinkled her nose. “It was as if they were waiting for their turns.”It sounded as though the bastard thought it necessary to leave no doubt of his ability to perform. “I can well imagine you were appalled by such a thing.”“Well, I should hope so!” She clucked her tongue and
