MILENA'S POV
I surveyed the room in one quick glance, taking note of the shocked faces of everyone in the room while my assistant Dora smiled at me, her arms folded across her body from where she stood. “My apologies for my late arrival. The press was an obstacle” I smiled, ignoring everyone's blatant look of shock before I sauntered over to a chair by the side where I could sit and overlook the meeting. Don't look, Milena. Don't look. From the corner of my periphery though, I could see Damien standing there, his mouth slightly open and a blank look on his face, his eyes following my every move. Good. The others quickly cleared their throats and then one of them whose tag read Richard spoke up. “Milena, I wasn't expecting to see you here. None of us were” Dora was at my side, handing me the tab in her hands so I could scroll through the presentation but at Richard's words, I paused my scrolling and scoffed. “That's Miss Carter to you, Richard” I said blankly, handing Dora back the tab. “Thank you, it's fine” The air in the room was so thick with tension that it could be sliced through with a knife and the silence was suffocating. Damien finally shut his mouth and sat down quietly but it seemed he had spaced out, his brows furrowed and gaze blank. “Shall we proceed?” I asked, looking around the group of people. A female board member nodded. “Indeed. Let us proceed” A man looked at how distant I was from the main table and he raised a brow. “Miss Carter…” the words seemed forced. “You're required to be at the head table with Mr Hale. Your seat is right beside his” I looked over at Damien's chair, still refusing to meet his almost pleading gaze and I raised my chin. “My seating arrangements will certainly have no effect on the outcome of this meeting however bringing up particularly useless stuff will. I'm not sitting there. Please proceed” The man let out an audible grunt and I arched a brow, swearing I heard him mutter a curse directed at me under his breath. I knew the old man. He was here at the time of my marriage to Damien and he wasn't exactly my supporter, he hated me and clearly, he still wanted to be keeping grudges. “Liam, isn't it? Dr Liam?” I asked, uncrossing my legs and standing up, a practiced smile on my face. The man refused to look up, he fixed his gaze on the document in front of him, his cheeks heating up as he realized everyone was now looking at him. “Watch your tongue around me, Dr Liam. Trust me, if I wanted to ruin your career, I could. Don't put ideas into my head” I warned, my voice low but sharp. Once more, the room went silent and Dora was tapping at the tab, clearly waiting for us to finish the discussion. Damien's fingers were tapping against the table rhythmicallyㅡhe was nervous. “Miss Carter. I apologize for my team mate's attitude. It shall not happen again, please sit down” he gestured back to my seat and this time, I looked at him, noticing the way he tensed under my scrutiny. He hadn't changed… not much… maybe he looked more mature now with the stubble he was sporting but still the same bastard I knew. “Make sure it doesn't. You can't even keep your own team and company in check” I muttered under my breath, making sure he heard it before I went to sit. Thankfully, the meeting went well and no one further questioned my authority and as soon as Dora wrapped it up, I stood up and watched as the board members filed out of the conference room, almost everyone bowing slightly to me before they left. Dora nodded at me and walked over to me. “Great job” I commended her, a genuine smile lighting up my face. She smiled back. “I'll meet you at the hotel” With a nod, she left the conference room and my heart dropped despite my calm facade. Damien was still there staring at me. He stood up from his chair, his eyes fixed on me as he walked to me, each step closing the distance between us and I knew I should quickly shut him down but as much as it disgusted me to admit, I needed him. “Mia…” He whispered when he was a few feet away from me. I whipped my neck to look at him and I frowned. Mia? Four years ago, I wished for him to call me that but he didn't, he threw me out instead. “It's Miss Carter” I reminded him. He looked taken aback and he ran a hand through his hair. “How?” He squeaked. I folded my arms across my chest. “How I got here? Guess I couldn't let my degree in computer science and software engineering go to waste, hm?” I gave him a smile that was far from genuine. He stared at meㅡhis gaze almost piercingㅡ then he took another step forward, regret clouding his features. “Let me…” “Don't” I cut him off and he went silent immediately. I studied him, wondering how to broach the topic but as the image of Theo filtered into my brain, I sighed and spoke up again. “Damien Hale” He straightened up at the use of his full name, his eyes holding a spark of hope. “Yeah?” It was funny. Roles were reversed now. “You want me to sign the merger with your company?” I asked him. He frowned slightly, not quite understanding what I was getting at. “I thought you already agreed to the deal?” A smile spread my lips. “No. There's one more condition you need to meet” “Which is?” “I need you to take a test in an hour” I informed him. He frowned even deeper. “Test? What kind of test?” This was it, Milena. The moment of truth. “The kind that determines if my son lives” I dropped the bombshell.MILENA'S POV “Here” I whispered, my voice soft as I placed the plate of waffles on the bedside table, reaching out to brush a stray strand of hair ove Theo's trembling frame under the sheets. He looked so frail that my heart ached and I was reminded of my prioritiesㅡ Him.He slowly turned to look at the food then back at me, his bottom lip wobbling as he looked around. He had been awake for an hour now but he seemed so disoriented and didn't want to talk but it was no cause for alarm so I figured to wait for the doctor to be here in a few hours as I was told that he would be out of it for a while even when he regained consciousness.“Whereㅡ Where are we?” He looked worried now as he tried to push himself up to sit.“No, baby” I chided him, leaning him back against the sheets easily. “Just lay down, okay? You can talk to me while you're resting”He obeyed without asking another question but I could see the obvious question in his eyes and his next words confirmed my fears. “Am I…still
DAMIEN'S POV Silence.I think I was already losing my mind with the way she just stared at me.Say something! Anything! Was she expecting to share the same room with Theo?“Lookㅡ” I began but she just wrapped her hands around herself.“I'll stay in here with my son” She didn't wait for me to finish speaking.Right. Of course she wanted to stay with Theo. Fuck, I was so stupid.Moving a step back, I nodded, trying to ignore the hollow ache in my chest from how she just rejected me. Not like I was expecting a different response from her anyways.“Yeah sure, good night, okay? And let me know if you need anything. I'm just right down the hall” I pointed to the room down the hallway and i could swear that I saw her eyes furrow, pulling together as she looked at the door.“That's not your room” She pointed out.Obviously.I gave a small smile. “I'm aware but it's just so I'm within reach, okay? Good night. We'll talk better in the morning, I know this is all very overwhelming to youㅡ” I wa
MILENA'S POV Morning came and I was sitting in the waiting room, my eyes red for staying up all night and I could feel a hollow ache in my chest from everything that had happened the previous night.Damien was with the doctor inside the room and they had begun to start the tests and treatments and amidst my worry for Theo, I couldn't help but think about the fact that our marriage certificates was already being presented to the court already and would be finalized in less than an hour.It became clear to me. I couldn't do anything to him. At least not while I was tied to him but at least I would save my son.Once more, the door to the ICU was pulled open and Damien walked out looking like hell, his hair a tangled mess while he massaged his arm, the frown on his face wiping off once we locked gazes. The doctor was right behind him. “We're done with the first round and we've begun to give Mr Damien the necessary shots to boost stem cells which will be used in a few weeks and we're alre
MILENA'S POV “Doctor!” I screamed, rushing into the sterile hallways of the hospital, the scent of death and antiseptic hitting me as soon as I rushed in.NoㅡNo.Dora was right behind me and she held me back as Theo was wheeled into the ER, his hand hanging limp by the side of the gurney.“No, you can't go in after them!” Dora held me back, her nails digging into my skin as she tried to steady me.I watched with blurry eyes as the door was shut close and for a moment, the world seemed to spin on it's axis and the sounds of the busy hospital in the dead of the night tuned out.TheoㅡMy Theoㅡ was in the hospital again. He had passed out. He wasn't responding. He wasㅡOh god.I collapsed to my knees, ignoring the sharp sting of the tiled floors against my knees. “Dora..” I whispered, my voice a slight squeak as she helped me to my feet, her hands trying to steady my weight. With wobbling feet, she led me to the waiting area and helped me to sit. “Are you okay? You can't quite pass out ri
MILENA'S POV The car ride back to the hotel was quiet and Dora sat beside me, her gaze fixed on the iPad in her hand but I could swear that I felt her gaze burning into the side of my head each time I looked outside the window.I wasn't sure why I was bothered. Damien was still with Siennaㅡ so what? Why would I care? Why was I this angry about it? Was it the fact that he conveniently managed to leave that out?Was he also planning something? There was no way he would propose a marriage contract to me when he was still with my sister. Maybe he wanted to humiliate me. Dangle what I needed most in my face then forcefully take it back after he had a day over Theo. No, I couldn't let that happen.“How did it go?” Dora finally asked, taking off her thin-rimmed glasses before turning to me.I shrugged and looked outside the window at the lights of the city's nightlife as we sped by.“Don't worry about it” I muttered, clearly not wanting to talk about it.She nodded and muttered something un
MILENA'S POV The next day, I was sitting in the conference room, my glasses shielding my eyes from the rest of the board members as we waited for Damien to show up.Late.Ugh, I had things to do.My gaze flicked over to the clock on the wall then back at the door that seemed to mock me. What the fuck did he think I would say to that stupid document he had sent to me? Oh yeah, you could take 40% of my say in the company just so you could wave around a hefty sum in my face?My heels tapped against the floor. One. Two. Three. Over and over.Suddenly, the door was pushed open and Damien walked in, looking like he had just run a mile and almost immediately, his eyes landed on me. I'd be lying if I said my heart didn't skip a beat by the way he just…stared.Everyone else stood up and greeted him but I remained seated, my legs crossed as i watched him collapse on his seat on the other end of the conference table.“You're late” I pulled off my glasses, setting it on the glass table. He still
