He is my protector, my guardian, my best friend, but what Nathan does not know is that he is also my crush, the love of my life. I have lived in the shadow of my older best friend for so long, the handsome, and ruthless playboy, king of the streets. I have watched him break several women's hearts, using them and dumping them like they don't matter. He calls me his sweet Angel, the only pure thing in his dark world. He does not believe he is capable of loving me the way I deserve to be loved, but I would show Nathan that deep down, he still has a beating heart. Would I find the courage to show him my heart already beats for him? I am VERA.

ONE

VERA’S POV

“So there’s a party tonight at my place, you can come Vera…”

I could not wipe off the huge smile that sat on my face, as I replayed Nathan’s words in my head. Nate Carter, the Nathan Carter had finally invited me to a party. Did this mean he now saw me as a grown woman, and not just the little sister of his late friend.

I did a twirl, giggling at my own stupidity. Did this mean Nathan thought I was beautiful?

With a big smile on my face, I picked up my phone and dialed my second best friend’s number. She picked up at the first ring.

“Do you think I’m beautiful Rachie?”

Rachel giggled. “Well hello to you too – where is this coming from if I may ask?”

“Just answer the question.” I demanded in mock seriousness, but I low key wanted an answer from her. I had lived in the shadows too much, I needed some reassurance to know that I belonged.

Rachel was quiet for a little while, then when she spoke next, her voice was emotional. “Of course my kitty. You’re fucking beautiful. You’re so gorgeous that I’m jealous of you half the time, and the other half, I wonder why no man has ever kidnapped you yet to carry you to a cave all for himself –”

I giggled. “I don’t think I’m looking to get kidnapped Rachie - where do you even get all these crazy ideas from?”

Rachel sighed. “I’d show you yours if you show me mine – why did you suddenly need reassurance about your looks?”

It was my turn to sigh. I didn’t tell her she had spoken the statement wrongly, instead I decided to answer her question – with at much truthfulness as I could muster. “My crush invited me to a party, so I – I guess I just want to look beautiful.”

“Your crush – oh my word!” I could already picture her mouth forming a big ‘O’ “Vera! You didn’t tell me you were crushing on anyone, I mean I didn’t know you had any crush since Jerry in fifth grade. What’s his name, who is he? Is he in our school – does Nathan know him?”

She said the last in a conspiratorial whisper, as if Nathan was somewhere listening in on our conversation. I sighed inwardly. What would Rachel say if I told her Nathan was the one I was crushing on, she would probably think I was mad – then she’d tell Nathan, then Nathan would literally kill me – that, or he’d stop talking to me forever, so worse case scenario. “I’d tell you all about it later, I promise.” I said quickly, and hung up before Rachel could offer to come over and help me prepare.

My heart was pounding a bit when I put down the phone, like I had just done something wrong – and very soon I would get caught. Of course, Nathan was way out of my league. Not only was he give years older, and already done with college while I was just eighteen, and yet to graduate high school, Nate was one of the most handsome guys in the city, and he was rich.

It was not even that his parents were rich, and he got to spend there money, no, Nathan was a millionaire in his own rights – and he didn’t have any parents – at least not that I knew of. He was his own man. I watched him sleep through more than half the girls in the city, even girls from my high school kept throwing themselves at him, fighting over him, and generally humiliating themselves. It was annoying the way Nate treated these women, like they were mere pleasure objects, to be used and dumped whenever he felt like it.

But of course, he was different with me. He called me his little angel, his princess, and a million other endearment terms that always made his current girlfriend jealous. Nathan was my best friend, and he always treated me with a tenderness that made me blush – even though sometimes he could act like he was my annoying senior brother. The thing was, I just knew that he did not love me in the kind of way I loved him, and if I told him, he would get very angry with me, and it would destroy our friendship. I couldn’t risk that.

My phone started ringing, snapping me out from my thoughts, and I felt my heart skip a beat as I saw his name appear on the screen.

“Nathan.” I said without a hello immediately I picked up.

“What’s wrong Vera – you never use my full name unless something is bothering you.”

I bit my bottom lip. He was right. I always calked him Nate – unless I was upset. How would he feel if I told him the reason I was upset was because I was trying to hide the fact that I had a crush on him? “I’m fine,” I said instead. “It’s just – I’m a little nervous, I’ve never been to a party before.” Thankfully, that was not a lie.

“Fu… how come? You mean non of the losers in your high school ever invited you to a party before?” He sounded angry.

“No! Geez Nate. It was all you. You sent away all the boys that liked me, stopped me from going to the Halloween party with Carter, and later, with Hunter, and when they threw a party in our school gym, you said I couldn’t go, and threatened all the boys around and in the neighborhood till they stopped talking to me.” I did not know when the anger had crept into my voice, but it was there. Nathan had been acting too much like an overbearing big brother, he had finally killed all my chances of having a social life – so he didn’t get to just call me and act like I had any semblance of a social life.

“I’m sorry Vee.” Nate sighed, and I felt guilty as I heard the weariness in his voice. “I just wanted to make sure I…”

He let his voice trail off, but we both knew the words he didn’t say. ‘he just wanted to make sure he honored the dying wish of his best friend, of my brother, Jason’s dying wish. We didn’t say that name – we hadn’t said that name since my older brother, and only sibling, Jason died five years ago after fighting for his life against cancer.

“It’s fine Nate.” I said, swallowing the lump in my throat. “I’m not angry, I’m just nervous.”

“It’s okay to be nervous – do you want me to come over? We could go to the party together, that way it would help take your nerves off.”

I didn’t even try to stifle my giggles as I nodded, then shouted “Yes.”

Nathan laughed. “Okay little kitten, better be ready in the next ten minutes – as a matter of fact, don’t get ready. I’m coming over to pick out what you’d wear. I don’t want you dressing slutty like the rest of these girls.”

I rolled my eyes as I hung up the phone, then I rushed to my wardrobe. I was going to get ready, with the sluttiest dress I could find before Nate showed up, then I’d dare him to take the clothes off me.

VERA’S POVI stepped into Nathan’s house, with my left hand curled around Nathan’s arm, and I tried not to sneeze as a whiff of smoke stung my nostrils. No, that was not cigarettes. I didn’t even try to figure out what it was they were smoking, or what pills they seemed to be passing around to each other at the party – so this was what an adult party was like! I glanced at Nate and smiled as I noted the frown on his face. He was obviously already regretting bringing me. I shrugged as I stepped in, well it was already to late to tell me to go back home – although I could not put it past him. I was in for another shock when I fully stepped into the building. Several girls were topless, and twerking on the laps of the guys. I blushed hotly and looked away. There was something so intimate about the way they were grinding their bodies against the guys. I let go of Nathan’s arm and stepped into the throng of people whining their bodies to the slow music and getting wasted on alcoh

VERA’S POVI could feel warm, hard masculine muscles pressed against my back, and a strong arm was holding me. His scent – his musky masculine scent was everywhere, making my head swim. Before I even opened my eyes, I felt my lips curve up in a smile. Nate. I was obviously in his arms – then I opened my eyes, and the pounding headache came. I looked down at our entwined bodies. I was no longer wearing the daring, red tube gown that I had put on to challenge Nate, instead I was wearing one of his huge T shirts, I felt my body with my free hand, and blushed as I discovered I was wearing only my undies underneath. Had Nathan seen me in my undies? His breathing was very calm and rhythmic, for a moment, I thought he was sleeping, but when I turned my head up, I found myself staring into his hooded dark blue eyes. I had never seen him with such and unreadable expression before, and I had no idea of what was going on in his mind. My not knowing made me feel vulnerable, and vulnerab

VERA’S POV “No. I wanted to teach you how painful it was when a man uses you merely for sexual pleasure, with no feelings attached. That’s what that kiss was, purely physical, zero feelings.”… I bit my lip at the memory of his words. I guess I deserved that. I had wanted to know what it felt like to be one of Nathan’s girls, and now I did.Nathan had come back to check how I was doing a while later, and maybe, my senses had come back then, because I apologized for kissing him, and thanked him for taking care of me at the party. My heart had been thudding against my chest as I spoke, and a hidden corner buried deep in my heart had hoped our kiss would open up a conversation about feelings, that I would be bold enough to tell him about my crush on him, how afraid I had been to speak up, and maybe – just maybe, he would tell me he felt the same way. But Nathan’s eyes had become unreadable as he dropped the bombshell about our entire making out being purely physical for him. It

VERA'S POV I looked at Nathan's polo on the bed. I liked wearing it, but I couldn't wear it home. So, I searched around for my dress. Where had I dropped it when I … Heat rose in my cheeks as I remembered I hadn't removed my clothes by myself. It would be the lecherous son of a bitch that drugged my drinks. What would I wear home now? Right at that moment, the door opened and Nathan walked in, or tried to anyway. But he froze when he saw me naked, apologized and walked out coolly. In that split second where he realized I was naked, my mind kept screaming at me to jump at him and see his reaction. Perhaps….just perhaps, he would forget... But I couldn't gather my courage for it. I sighed when the door closed after him. That would have been the most stupid decision of the year, and I've made very stupid decisions, like kissing Nathan. He probably has girls throwing themselves at him all the time, clothed or otherwise, and would be no stranger to it. I would ju

VERA'S POV "Are you there?" Rachel's voice came over the phone, cutting through my dismay. "Yeah, yeah," I said, flustered. There was a suspicious "uh huh," at the other end of the line, followed by a pause and a giggle. "Wait…Vee, are you just coming back from your crush's party?" Rachel asked. "Um…yeah…" There was a squeal at the other end. "Hurray! It was all night?" she asked breathlessly. "Yeah…," I wanted to tell her I didn't even know when the party was over, seeing as I was knocked out, but she speared on. "Wow!" she squealed again. "You're a big girl now, Vee. You're leaving me behind," she giggled madly. "How was it? Wait, you haven't told me who it is, have you? Which boy wasn't at school today too?" I held my breath. Rachel groaned in frustration. "Gosh. They're too many that didn't come to school today. You will tell me who it was and all about it when you come to school, won't you?" she asked breathlessly. I groaned mentally. I

VERA’S POV I slouched on the couch, my eyes on the door through which Rachel had just left and thought about the conundrum. That was one bridge I wouldn't wait till I got to it before thinking how to cross it. Nathan was like a big brother, so just talking with him shouldn't be much of an issue. But for some reason, I felt like talking about the products with him wouldn't be just talking. Sighing, I stood up. With Nathan, talking about his business was uncharted territory. His professional life had always been something he kept to himself, so I didn't really know how to broach the topic with him. Well, I would just let my mind work it out while I go replenish my supplies. I hate not having any food in the house as I usually get hungry at midnight. I took my credit card, purse and a paperback novel before walking out of the room. Thirty minutes later, I stood before a large store with glass doors. I returned a red haired store attendant's wave before pushing the

VERA’S POVMartha, Beth and I exchanged a look. "That would be me, sir —" Martha said before we could talk, but we both interrupted her. "No. That would be me sir, and I'm sorry," Beth and I said at the same time. We looked at each other and had to bite back a smile. Martha was already in a lot of trouble with the manager and he might fire her. The manager looked at the three of us in confusion. "Who?" he asked. "Me," all three of us replied again. His face clouded over. "Are you playing with me?" he growled. Then he turned to Freya. "Which of them, baby?" he asked her. Freya pointed at me. The manager turned to me, and I could see he was conflicted. We were not really on bad terms, and I was one of his best employees. "You?" he asked me. "Seems like a week off has made you forget how to treat customers. No days off for you till I'm satisfied," he said. By the side, Martha rolled her eyes, which was a feat of its own, but Freya looked very dissat

VERA'S POV They went at it for a few seconds more before realizing they had company. Both their faces turned to me and while the lady's face heated up in embarrassment, Nathan's face hardened in irritation. "Um…sorry?" I said, my own face heating up as well. I hurriedly backed out of the door, slamming it in my haste. Gosh, is there some bleach for the brains? If you don't have that, I could make do with that memory eraser from men in black. I waited till I was sure they must be dressed, then knocked on the door just to be extra sure. "You can come in now!" Nathan's voice called from inside, a little gruffy. I walked back in cautiously because…just in case. The girl was nowhere to be found, but Nathan was sitting on the couch, still half naked. He had on his shorts, but nothing else. I couldn't help taking in the nice view. I had seen him half dressed before, but that was way back when he was still in high school and I in middle school. He hadn't devel

VERA We both watched her walk out the door, then Nathan turned to me. His face was set, and I recognized the angry protector look he gets on him sometimes. "Now, you, don't even try to feed me that bullshit. What's between you and her?" I opened my mouth for some smart retort but none came to mind. This was just like Nathan. Any other person would have known what the problem was, but not Nathan. To him, all women were the same and for the same purpose. Hell, I wasn't even sure he remembered she was the same lady he had made walk out of his party topless just the night before. I sighed in frustration. "Just another lady your attention to me is making jealous," I replied. "Poor her, then," he replied dismissively. "Please, could you stop calling me your kitten in front of your female friends?" "Acquaintances," he corrected. Then he smiled brightly. "You know that's not happening, baby. So, what's it you need?" I gulped. Could we go back to discus
