The words weren’t loud. They didn’t need to be. His tone was enough to wrap around her throat like invisible fingers.

This was not just a reprimand. It was a test.

He was watching her, not just to punish her tardiness, but to see how she would react. Would she grovel? Offer excuses? Crumble under the weight of his presence?

But Cassandra didn’t flinch.

She met his eyes with a steady gaze, even as her heart hammered like a drum inside her chest. She kept her back straight, her chin slightly raised. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of seeing her squirm.

Sure, she was late. And yes, technically it was Nia’s fault. But maybe being late had come with an unexpected advantage. Everyone here, from the sharply dressed receptionist to the passersby, looked like they’d stepped out of a luxury magazine. If she had shown up in one of her old thrift-store blazers, she might have been dismissed at the door.

And Darius? He wasn’t a man who noticed excuses. He noticed results.

She offered a tigh

Darius’s eyes remained distant, but inside, his thoughts churned like a storm.None of this made sense. Not the kiss. Not her reaction. Not the way he had felt. When Cassandra touched him, something ancient had awakened. Something primal. Something he hadn’t felt in five long years. Not since her.Not since Selene. His first mate. His only mate.Or so he thought. The memory clawed up from the back of his mind like a phantom, Selene’s laughter, her touch, her scent. The way the bond had felt back then, like stars aligning beneath his skin. And the way it had been ripped away the night she died. The pain had almost driven him mad.His wolf had gone silent, howling only once before falling into a deep, unbreakable slumber. The man that remained, the one who walked out of that fire, had been colder, harder. He buried himself in war, in business, in shadow. He had sealed himself off from the world, from the Pack, from hope.He was certain he would never feel that way again. And then… Cassa

Then, finally, they pulled apart, breathless.Their lips parted with a soft gasp. Her cheeks were red, her breathing fast. She stared at him, stunned. Her lips still tingled from the kiss.Darius didn’t speak. His golden eyes were still locked on hers, his hand still firm on her back. His expression was unreadable, like even he didn’t understand what had just happened. He looked like a man who had just lost control. And Cassandra? She felt like she had just jumped off a cliff… and she was still falling. The room was quiet again.Too quiet. Her mind raced, trying to make sense of what had just happened. Her body still buzzed from the kiss. Her heart still pounded in her chest. This wasn’t part of the plan. She was supposed to be the one in control. She was supposed to use him, not feel something when he touched her.Darius stared at her for a moment longer. His hand was still on her back. His lips still tingled with the echo of her kiss. His golden eyes searched hers, looking for what,

She gasped, but not in time to pull away. His fingers wrapped around her wrist. Tight. Firm. Not painful, not yet, but commanding in a way that said don’t you dare move. Then his other hand lifted. The screwdriver.Still streaked with Moretti’s blood. He didn’t threaten her with it, not overtly. He didn’t brandish it or make some dramatic gesture. That would have been easier.Instead, he did something far worse. He placed it gently, delicately, against the side of her neck. The cool metal kissed her skin, and she forgot how to breathe.Everything inside her stilled. Not from the contact. From what it meant. One flick of his wrist. That’s all it would take. A single moment of decision. She felt the tip nudge against the pulse in her throat, steady and rhythmic and horrifyingly loud.Darius leaned closer. His voice dipped to a whisper, just for her.“So,” he murmured, “are you happy now, Miss Lane?”Her lips parted. But her voice, her entire will, had abandoned her.He wasn’t yelling. H

She stared as he stood up from his chair, a stoic expression on his face, but in his eyes she could tell he was angry. Without hesitation, Darius yanked the screwdriver out of Moretti’s hand.A fresh scream tore through the air.Blood sprayed in a thin arc, splattering across polished wood and expensive suits. Moretti crumpled, clutching his mangled hand, his face contorted in white-hot agony.Darius barely looked at him.“I advise you all to go and get your files ready,” he said, voice calm as ever, each word cutting like glass. “This is just a warning… of what’s yet to come. Get out. All of you.”Panic.Chairs screeched. Footsteps thundered. The room descended into chaos. The suits scrambled like rats on a sinking ship, bumping into each other in their haste to escape the storm they had once called a boss. A few stumbled. One man nearly fell but caught himself on the edge of the table, eyes wide with raw fear. They didn’t dare look back. They just ran.Cassandra stood as well, her l

Rowan flinched, eyes dropping instantly to the polished floor, his entire posture folding inward. Cold sweat prickled at the base of his neck. Not from fear of being punished, he’d faced worse, but from sheer disbelief.Darius had spoken into his mind. The Alpha. The Iron Thorn. The man who never answered back.Rowan had spent the last four years offering mindlink updates, briefings, warnings, never once had Darius replied. Not even during that one ambush in Romania, when they’d been outnumbered and Rowan had begged for backup. Not even when Darius's sister had gone missing and Rowan had tracked her for three days straight. But now?Now Darius spoke.Because of her.Rowan bowed his head lower, hiding the storm in his expression. Of all the times for him to listen, he thought bitterly. Of course it would be now.Cassandra was oblivious to the mental conversation. She had already reached her chair, beside Darius and seated herself with grace. Crossing one leg over the other, she turned

The car rolled to a stop at the grand entrance, the golden crest of a clawed wolf etched into the glass doors. Rowan glanced at his watch as he stepped out.“We’re late,” he muttered, before calling over his shoulder, “Hurry up.”Cassandra didn’t move. Not immediately. For a moment, she remained frozen in place, staring up at the building as though it might swallow her whole. Her thoughts swirled. Would she run into Evan today? Was he even still around? Would he still be staying here, lounging in the same penthouse suite he used to use for his indiscretions? She wasn’t ready to see him.Not yet.Not while Darius still saw her as a disposable new hire.No. If she was going to face him again, it would be with Darius Thorn at her side, his hand possessively on her back, his voice calm and dangerous as he introduced her as someone important, someone off-limits.Only then would she look Evan in the eye.Only then would she win.“Cassandra.”Rowan’s voice cut through her spiral. She turned.
