Laura’s POV

My mouth snapped shut, the weight of his words hanging heavy in the quiet corridor.

Ryder didn't say another word. He simply tightened his iron grip around my fingers and marched me the rest of the way to his private suite. Pushing me gently inside, he slammed the massive oak door shut and threw the heavy iron bolt into place with a sharp, echoing CLANG.

The silence inside his quarters was thick, almost suffocating.

"Say something," Ryder growled softly, turning around to face me.

Laura’s POVThe mattress dipped under his weight, and the heat coming off his body immediately made my skin prickle.“You’re still too close,” I muttered into the darkness, clutching the heavy duvet tightly against my collarbone.“Laura, if I move any farther toward the edge, I’ll be sleeping on the floor,” Ryder grumbled. His deep voice came from right behind my shoulder. “And as much as I adore you, I’m not sleeping on the stone floor of my own chamber.”I turned my head slightly and caught the faint outline of his sharp profile in the moonlight.“You could have taken the sofa like a normal host.”“I’m an Alpha, not a host,” he replied, reaching out in the darkness for the edge of the blanket. Before I could say anything, he gently pulled the duvet over my exposed shoulder and tucked it around me with a tenderness I wasn’t expecting. Then he settled back onto his side of the bed.“Now close your eyes. If Ryan’s wolves try to break through those doors, they’ll have to get through me

He simply tightened his iron grip around my fingers and marched me the rest of the way to his private suite. Pushing me gently inside, he slammed the massive oak door shut and threw the heavy iron bolt into place with a sharp, echoing CLANG.The silence inside his quarters was thick, almost suffocating."Say something," Ryder growled softly, turning around to face me. He stood tall, broad, and intimidating, his dark hair disheveled from the night's chaos, his gray eyes burning with an unreadable intensity."What do you want me to say?" I whispered, my voice trembling as I backed up until the edge of his carved bed pressed against the back of my knees. "You just stood in front of your entire council, declared war, and called me your mate like I'm something you bought at a market!"Ryder closed the distance between us in two long strides, stopping right in fro

Laura’s POV The silence in the council chamber was suffocating. Every elder stood frozen, their eyes wide in absolute shock as Ryder's claim hung heavy in the smoke-filled air."His mate."My mind was reeling, my chest heaving as I looked up at Ryder's sharp, unyielding jawline. I tried to pull back just an inch to catch my breath, but his fingers dug gently into my hip, holding me firmly against his side."This is absolute madness!" Elder Cassian shouted, slamming his heavy fist down onto the oak table. "She is a rogue from Silvercrest! A dangerous risk to our pack's survival! You cannot claim a female whose very presence threatens to drag us into total destruction!"Before Cassian could even draw another breath, Ryder moved. He didn't let go of my hand, but his Alpha aura flared so sharply, so suffocatingly heavy, that three of the elders instantly dropped their heads, gasping for air under the sheer weight of his power."Say that again, Cassian," Ryder whispered, his voice dangero

Laura’s POV"He isn't taking you anywhere," Ryder repeated, his voice dropping into that terrifyingly quiet register that meant he was done discussing it.His broad hand tightened around my fingers, pulling me down the winding stone staircase as shouts echoed up from the lower levels. Servants were rushing past us with wet blankets, their eyes wide with fear, but Ryder didn't even glance at them. His entire focus was set squarely ahead."Ryder, slow down!" I gasped, my knees wobbling as I tried to match his long, heavy strides. "You're dragging me!"He stopped abruptly on the landing, turning around so fast I nearly ran straight into his chest. His gray eyes were dark and stormy, but when he looked down at me, the harsh grip on my hand instantly loosened, his fingers adjusting to gently wrap around my palm instead."I am not dragging you, Laura," he rasped, his breath warm against my forehead as he leaned down close. "I am keeping you beside me. There is a difference.""People are ter

Laura’s POV "You have to see what's going on downstairs," Vance repeated, his voice tight with an urgency that cut straight through the heavy smoke drifting down the gallery.Ryder ran a heavy hand through his dark hair, letting out a long, slow breath. He didn't panic. He didn't rush down the stairs like a madman or roar at the sentries. Instead, his storming gray eyes locked onto Vance with a calm, terrifying stillness that made the surrounding council members flinch."Is Ryan really going to do this?" Ryder murmured, his voice deadly quiet as he turned his gaze slowly toward the terrified elders standing behind Vance. "Is he really going to test my patience?"The hall fell dead silent. The council members shuffled uncomfortably, avoiding his gaze entirely. They had spent hours preaching peace, insisting Ryan was just posturing. Now, with smoke billowing from the east wing and blood on the stone, their mouths were shut tight."Look at them," Ryder rasped softly, his hand never rele

Laura’s POV "He would have done worse," I echoed, my voice barely a whisper, threadbare and shaking. My eyes remained glued to the shaft of the flaming arrow embedded in the rug, the leather pouch tied to it dripping dark, fresh blood onto the scorched fibers. The smell of burning wool and metallic copper filled the air, thick and suffocating.Ryder didn't answer right away. He stood over the fire like a dark statue, his broadsword hanging heavy in his right hand. Slowly, with terrifying deliberation, he knelt down and used the tip of his dagger to slice the leather cord binding the pouch to the arrow. He didn't flinch as the blood stained his calloused fingers."Ryan doesn't make empty threats," Ryder said flatly, his storming gray eyes fixing on the crumpled, blood-written parchment inside the pouch."What does it say?" I stammered, taking a tiny, hesitant step back until my spine hit the cold stone of the bedpost. My knees felt like water. "Ryder... what is that?"He stood up, tow
