LOGINNORA'S POV
Who are you, Jeremy?
Jeremy was so quiet throughout the drive and all I could think of was the nonsense Rex spilled.
I faced the window because I was too scared to look at his stern face.
‘Why would my mum sell me? Why did Jeremy buy me? Who do they think they are to treat me like an object? I am human too!” I cried inside of me. I really needed to know what was going on.
“The breakfast!” The whole scenerio flashed in head.
“Why do I feel that I might have committed a lot of offense at breakfast?” I questioned myself.
“Miss Nora” The driver called out, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I turned and Jeremy was no longer in the car. I guess I was really lost in my thoughts since I didn't know when Jeremy stepped out of the car.
“Please drop me off at the other parking lot.” I said to the driver.
I didn't want anyone to see me coming out of the same car the CEO stepped out from.
The driver opened the door for me even after telling him that there was no need. He drove away after dropping me off.
Looking at the high rise building, my fists clenched and it felt like my insides were being knotted. I walked into the office and–
“Booo” Tffany jumped from nowhere and scared the living hell out of me.
I hugged my handbag tightly incase it was a thief.
“Good morning, Nora! I could not sleep because I kept thinking of Jeremy.” She complained.
“Do you realize that my heart almost just jumped out of my chest?”
“Well, Guess what?” She blinked twice trying to act cute.
“What?” I almost screamed at her.
“You are alive” She smiled like a psycho and I just pushed her away jokingly.
Tiffany found her name tag on a desk and chair with an Id card attached to it. We searched around but we didn't find mine.
‘Miss Nora!’ The same lady from yesterday– Jeremy's secretary, called out.
“Your desk is in the Ceo’s office.” There was a bit of jealousy in her voice.
I was appalled.
“I guess the Ceo has eyes on you, Nora.” Tiffany sneakily whispered.
I ignored her and went to Jeremy's office.
“If we were to stay in the same office, why did he leave me in the car?” I thought.
Maybe just like me, he doesn't want anybody to know that we are step siblings.
“Good morning, sir!”
“Skip the formalities, others may not know that we are step siblings but we know.” He was reading some documents as he spoke to me, he didn't even look at me and for some reasons, I felt bad.
“You should know by now that you are my personal assistant.” He stood and tucked his hands in his pocket as he sat on his desk.
His phone chimed and he stood up immediately, his face showed that the text was probably an emergency.
“I..I di..” I stammered.
“Well, you only have to work with me at the office, not any other place.” He cut me short.
“Is there more to his job?” I wondered.
“You can go through those files, I will be expecting your briefing when I get back.” He walked out of the door without waiting for my response, I guess this is my life now.
My phone kept vibrating in my bag. It was Laurel's call.
Damn, I was supposed to call Laurel since she kept blowing up my phone.
“Hey girl, I have been so occ…”
“Jake is dead.”
“Jake is what??” I wanted to be sure that I heard.
“You heard me right, your blackmailer ex-boyfriend has gone to hell just as it should be.” She laughed heartily.
“Oh dear, it was a real awful one, his battered body was found in the dumpster at the gambling den where he spent most of his time and money that he does not have. His limbs were cut off too.” She seemed to be having fun.
“Hi, I'd like a full cream coffee, please.” I overheard a customer say at the other end of the phone.
“Congratulations, my girl! Let's talk later” She ended the call.
This was the best news I have heard in a while.
Jake was my ex-boyfriend. We dated for six months, I never had sex with him even though he kept trying to have sex with me.
**Flashback to the previous year**
I needed some documents for my graduation in college so I returned home. I met my mother gambling with Jake. I knew my mother gambled, but my boyfriend gambling with my mother??
“Nora, you didn't tell me that you'll be coming home.” She stuttered.
Jake tried to hide but I saw him already. I could only wonder if they were having sex because of this prostitute of a mother that I had and Jake who keeps begging for sex.
The sight was disgusting, I picked my documents and I slammed the door. I sent Jake a break up text and since then he started blowing up my phone with texts and calls.
Four months had passed since we broke up and he stopped calling or texting. I thought he had finally moved on until two weeks before my mum broke the news of her marriage to me.
I was with Nora at Sips cafe when Jake called me.
“I have your nudes, send me ten thousand dollars or I will post it. After all, You are rich now.” He just said and ended the call.
My jaw dropped. Confusion, written all over my face.
“Dont panic, He is just a confused guy.” Laurel said.
My phone chimed. Yes, he just sent the pictures. My soul left my body. How did he even get them? I never gave into his sex requests.
I could see that Laurel was also shocked. After attending to the customers on the long queue. She came to hug me.
A stranger passed by and mistakenly hit my shoulder. He wore a face cap and a really tinted glasses, he smelled like…
**Back to reality**
“Wait, the stranger smelled like Jeremy. I knew that scent was familiar but my thoughts went to high school first instead of the cafe.” I thought to myself.
“After all, I am rich now.” Thos was the sentence Jake said on the phone, Mum probably went to brag about her new husband in the gambling den, that was why he said that. I should have known from that point.
“You should start going through those files before the Ceo gets back.” That damn secretary again.
I faked a smile at her and she left. I headed to Jeremy's desk to transfer the files to my table. My eyes hit a picture that had fallen under his chair.
That looked like… I picked it up and it was Jake's picture with his information written at the back.
My mind flashed back to the black bag that I saw two men putting in one of the cars yesterday at the house.
“Why does Jeremy have Jake's picture?” I panicked.
Nora’s POVI was not fully asleep when Jeremy returned home. I heard his footsteps halt at my doorstep. I felt a sense of relief knowing that he was no longer at the club. I had looked around for him upon hearing the gunshot but he was nowhere to be found. Laurel urged us to return home.I could barely sleep and when I did, I slept till 8am and ended up missing my gym appointment.I dragged myself out of bed and did my meditation. While I meditated, it dawned on me that I have not been to the office since the whole incident with Jeremy at the cottage happened. My eyes sparked open at the thought of that. That was the first time I made the headlines and it did not turn out well.Due to the scandal, everybody at the office is now aware that Jeremy and I are step siblings. I still believe the scandal was a set up and whoever did it is out for my and Jeremy’s downfall. After meditating, I packed my mat and went ahead to take a shower. The fog from the hot water blurred the mirror. I wiped
Jeremy’s POVBy the time the sun had started to touch the sky, we had enough threads to follow. Salerno’s encryption fingerprint had been used, but not from his office. From a council subnet that only a handful of people accessed. “I’ll take it up from here. You can all go home.” They yawned as if they hadn’t slept in three days.“Alone?” Don Sullivan said.“Yes.” I paused for a while to look at him. “If I need any help from the council, I’ll call for a meeting.” “Where is Salerno?” I picked up my phone as soon as I saw the call from my men who went to find him.”“Boss, there is an issue.” “Speak!” I commanded.“Salerno’s entire family has been murdered, but...”“But what?!” I cut in sharply.“Salerno is missing. We can’t find his body anywhere. Also, a car is missing from his garage and the gate was wide open when we got here.”“Salerno, that bastard.” I smirked.“Follow the tire tracks.”“Alright boss.” He said, I ended the call.I looked at Denver and shook my head.“Salerno is
JEREMYI left the VIP room in all hopes that Nora would listen to me and go home because I was not sure how the meeting with the Venom clan was going to end.“Venom clan’s in the east wing,” Denver said, falling into step beside me. His tone had changed—low, alert, all business now. “They came in armed, Jeremy. They said they wanted to talk, but you and I both know what that means.”“I know,” I said flatly. “Let’s hear them out before I decide who dies first.”I didn’t let the word ‘armed’ change my pace. Threats were part of the job. Betrayals were the part that never got any easier. “Then let them speak,” I said. “We’ll see what kind of courage they brought with their mouths.”We turned down the hallway that led to the private back lounge—a place built for discreet deals, far from the music and chaos of the main club. Two of my men flanked the door, guns visible under their jackets. They stepped aside as I pushed the door open. The Venom clan was already there. Five of them, dressed
NORAJeremy snapped my fingers and the bouncers moved like trained dogs. The VIP booth emptied faster than I expected, people who had been laughing a second ago now scrambled out, eyes lowered, heels clacking.Denver stayed behind, rubbing his jaw like he had a headache. He was trying to be useful, but Jeremy told him to leave too, not in a disrespectful way. I didn’t move. I sat there like a portrait, one leg crossed over the other.“You want something,” I said. “Want something? Why the fuck are you at a club?” He furiously said.I scrunched my nose. “The same reason you are here… To have fun.” Anger lingered in his eyes. I still sat there like the main character and watched his face burn red with anger.I didn’t plan on going to the club. Laurel is the club person but she coerced me into going because she wanted to ‘cheer me up.’ But, I knew it was because she had a huge crush on one of the bartenders. She spoke about him anytime she got the chance she got to.I never knew the cl
JEREMYI paced back and forth in my study. I could not get the image of Nora in that red dress out of my head. And the email? She sounded like she didn't need me anymore. My laptop chimed. I ran to it thinking it was Nora.My anxiety changed to dissapointment on seeing Denver’s text. “Remember the meeting by 10am.”“Cancel the meeting. I don't owe them anymore. I only decided to marry Madison, not because they suggested it but because it was the best decision for the council. I am their capo and they should learn to respect that.” I typed furiously and hit the send button.“Club by 10pm tonight.” I added.I clenched my jaw. Of course. Work. The one thing that never let me breathe.“Cancel the meeting,” I typed sharply. “I don’t owe them anything. I agreed to marry Madison because it was best for the council, not because they suggested it. I’m their capo—they should remember that.”I hit send and leaned back, exhaling. My reflection on the dark laptop screen looked like a stranger. Ey
NORAZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. A call from Laurel got me out of bed.“Laurel, it’s 5:34 a.m.” My voice was hoarse, thick with sleep.“Yeah, yeah, whatever. Girl, what did I see on your I*******m? You looked stunning in that red dress.” Her voice was way too bubbly for that hour.I rubbed my eyes, squinting at the dim light slipping through my curtains. “You woke me up to talk about a dress?”“Yes, ma’am! Because that was not just any dress. That was a statement. You were giving the main character soft revenge.”Laurel always had that bright energy. “You’re ridiculous.” I couldn’t help but smile.“And you love me,” she said, laughing. “Come on, spill. What happened last night? I saw Jeremy in one of the background clips.” I sighed, leaning against my headboard. “It was his engagement dinner, after all”There was silence. “And…?”“And nothing,” I said softly. “I walked in, he looked... shocked, I guess. Everyone went quiet for a second. Then dinner went on.”Laurel hummed dramatically. “Mmmmm
Chapter 37JEREMYThe smell of oud filled the air as I adjusted my tie and glanced at the clock. It was 7:30 a.m. I was running late for a meeting at the office with the shareholders, but I didn’t care much. My mind has been elsewhere lately. I have been restless, distracted, hovering between what
Nora’s POVI felt my heart break into a million pieces at the mention of Jeremy’s statement. “What did you say to me?” My voice was low, laced with pain and anger. “I di…didn’t mean it that way, Nora..I just…” Jeremy stuttered, he closed an inch between us, but I stepped backwards.I felt broken.
Jeremy’s POVI felt a sense of relief after releasing the statement. The hateful comments about Nora reduced, the public sympathized with her instead. I hate that I had to put her through that. Now, I only had the mafia council to take off my back. They knew the truth unlike the public that bought
Jeremy’s POVMy grip tightened around the whiskey glass. “Don’t lecture me, Denver. I’ve protected Nora this far, haven’t I?”“Protected?” Denver scoffed. “She’s a prisoner in her own room. That’s not protection, Jeremy, that’s confinement. And the moment she finds out you’re considering marrying Ma
