Chapter 77- The Weight Of Family Burdens

Jane's POV

I looked at Mom as she was about to spill the truth but then she closed her mouth again.

My throat now became tight. “Mom,” I whispered. “Talk to me, say something.”

Finally she spoke as she took my hand. “Follow me.”

I now started following her. My heart was beating very loudly. The floorboards were making sounds the same way that they used to whenever I was sneaking into the kitchen to collect late night snacks.

When we now reached the end of the hall, she opened the door and my breath seized.

Dad was laying on the bed, the same one that he and Mom shared for as long as I can remember.

Dad was not looking like the man that I grew up with. His skin has lost its color. His cheeks were saggy. There were tubes running into his arm and an oxygen mask sat at the side of his bed, ready if it was needed.

For a moment, I was not able to move. My knees were feeling weak.

“Dad…” I whispered.
