CHAPTER 10-RULES OF MO TING

Anna's POV

I stepped through the glass doors of Mo Ting Global Holdings at 8:15 a.m., appointment letter saved on my phone and a single notebook in my bag. The lobby moved with purpose. People in tailored clothes crossed the marble floor without looking at one another.

I approached the reception desk. A young woman looked up, expression polite but distant.

“Name?”

“Anna Li. First day. Eco-City Project.”

She typed, then frowned at the screen. “There’s no temporary pass listed under that name.”

My fingers tightened around the strap of my bag until the leather creased. “HR sent the letter yesterday. It says I report to Mr. Andreas Mo Ting.”

The receptionist’s eyes flicked up at the name. Her posture changed at once. “One moment.” She picked up the phone and spoke in a low voice.

While I waited, another employee, a man in a dark suit, stopped at the desk beside me and dropped a thick folder too hard on the counter.

“I need the updated contracts for the West Wing meeting. Now.”

The receptionist covered the mouthpiece. “Sir, I’m assisting a new—”

“I don’t care who you’re assisting. The meeting starts in twelve minutes.”

The air between them immediately tightened. I shifted my weight, ready to step aside, when a calm voice cut through from behind me.

“Is there a problem?”

Mr. Kim stood there, tablet in hand, expression unreadable. The man in the suit straightened immediately.

“No problem, Mr. Kim. Just needed the files.”

“Then wait your turn.” Mr. Kim’s tone stayed even. The man took his folder and walked away without another word. The receptionist exhaled quietly and ended her call. She handed me a temporary pass with both hands, eyes lowered.

Mr. Kim turned to me. “Ms. Li. Welcome to Mo Ting Global. Follow me.”

I walked beside him toward the elevators. My pulse had climbed during the brief exchange. I kept my face still and my shoulders level.

Inside the elevator he spoke without looking at me. “First days here are simple. Learn the rules quickly. Follow them. The company runs on precision. Mr. Mo Ting does not repeat instructions, and he does not accept excuses. Deadlines are fixed. Quality is non-negotiable. If something is wrong, fix it before it reaches his desk.”

I nodded once. “Understood.”

The elevator opened on the 58th floor. The open workspace stretched wide, rows of desks, large screens, quiet conversation that dropped even lower when Mr. Kim appeared. Several heads turned, then quickly returned to their screens. Shoulders tensed. One woman closed a file with unnecessary care. A junior architect who had been speaking near the printer fell silent mid-sentence and stepped back.

Mr. Kim led me to a clean desk near the project cluster. A laptop, a key card, and a slim handbook waited on the surface.

“This is your station. The handbook covers protocol, reporting lines, and meeting standards. Read it today. Your first project briefing is at ten. Until then, familiarize yourself with the Eco-City files already loaded on the system. If you have questions, ask me once. Not twice.”

He paused. “One rule matters more than the others. Never disappoint the CEO. If you do, you will know immediately.”

I met his eyes. “I won’t.”

He gave a short nod and left.

I sat. The chair was firm. I opened the handbook. Every page carried the same undercurrent: accuracy, speed, no second chances. Meeting notes were to be submitted within one hour. Design revisions required documented reasons. Personal devices stayed on silent and out of sight during work hours. I turned the pages slowly, absorbing each line, my free hand resting flat on the desk to keep it steady.

Around me the floor moved in controlled silence. When someone mentioned Mr. Mo Ting’s name in passing, voices lowered. One junior architect dropped a pen, muttered a quiet apology to no one, and picked it up with both hands. Another checked the clock twice in under a minute, then returned to typing with renewed speed. A senior designer walked past my desk, glanced at the handbook in my hands, and offered a thin, brief smile that did not reach her eyes.

I opened the Eco-City files and forced my attention onto the data. The design problems from the assessment returned in sharper detail. I made notes in the margins of my notebook, handwriting steady even while my knee pressed hard against the underside of the desk. Every few minutes I glanced at the time. 9:10. 9:25. 9:37.

At 9:40 a soft chime sounded on the internal system. A message appeared on my screen.

Ms. Anna Li – Report to the CEO’s office immediately.

My hand stilled on the mouse. Around me no one looked up, yet the quiet seemed to deepen. I closed the file, stood, and smoothed the front of my blazer once. My fingers left faint creases in the fabric before I forced them to relax at my sides.

I walked toward the glass corridor that led to the corner office, the same door I had walked through for the interview. Each step felt measured. The weight of every eye that carefully did not watch me settled across my shoulders. I kept my chin level and my breathing even.

There are many rules, but one matters most: never disappoint the CEO.

I stopped in front of the door and raised my hand to knock.

Anna's POV The next morning, I walked Amyra to the school gate and waited until she disappeared inside with the other children. Teacher Lin was already standing near the entrance, folder in hand. She caught my eye and stepped closer.“Ms. Li. Thank you for making time.”I nodded once, fingers tightening around the strap of my bag. I could already guess what she wanted to talk to me about. “You wanted to speak about Amyra”, I asked calmly.Teacher Lin’s voice stayed low. “She’s been participating well, but I’ve noticed she always more rest after longer activities. The interschool singing competition is in three weeks and she wants to join. I think it’s good for her, but I'm afraid rehearsal stretches would be too stressful for her to handle. I wanted you to know so you can decide.”My chest tightened. I kept my face steady and swallowed once before answering. “If she wants to join the competition, then please let her. I'll speak with her and make sure she's careful. You can keep the

Anna's POV It was already after nine when I got home. The living room light was still on. Mama sat on the sofa with a folded scarf in her lap. Papa looked up from the small table where he had been sorting pharmacy receipts.“You’re late again,” Mama said, but her voice held no sharp edge.“The work ran long.” I set my bag down and loosened the top button of my blouse. “Everything is fine. The project is moving.”Papa nodded once. “Good. We’re proud of you.”Mama’s hands stilled on the scarf. “As long as you’re eating and sleeping a little.”“I am.” I gave them both a small smile that felt thinner than I intended. “I’m going to check on Amyra.”They did not stop me.I pushed her door open carefully. The room was dim, lit only by the soft glow of the night-light she still needed. Amyra lay on her side, one arm tucked under the pillow, the other resting lightly over her chest the way she always slept. Her curls had spilled across the pillow. The yellow dress from the morning was folded

Anna's POV The messages kept arriving.I finished the wind-load notes and sent the revised model back to Jun with three clear instructions. Before the reply came, Mei appeared at my door with a cost summary from Finance. The material substitution they proposed would save money on the east tower cladding but changed the thermal performance enough to affect the environmental targets. I compared the two reports side by side, marked the conflicting lines, and called the Procurement desk.A woman named Helen answered. Her voice was brisk, already mid-calculation on another project. I explained the conflict without raising my tone. She listened, asked for the exact specification numbers, and promised a revised quote by mid-afternoon. I thanked her and ended the call, then forwarded the marked pages to the Environmental team with a short note requesting their assessment of the performance drop.Emily returned with a tablet full of coordination requests. We sat at the side table and worked t

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 17-THE RULE EVERYONE FEARED

Anna's POV I stepped through the glass doors of Mo Ting Global twelve minutes past the hour. My pulse sat high in my throat. The company’s rules on punctuality were not suggestions. Mr. Kim had made that clear on the first day, and every floor still moved as if those rules were written into the walls. I expected someone to stop me…a note, a look or a quiet summons. Instead the lobby continued its usual flow of people with passes and purpose. I kept my head level and walked toward the elevators, fingers tight around the strap of my bag. On the fifty-eighth floor, the Planning & Development Division was already working. People's working screens glowed, conversations stayed low. I moved through the open area toward the cluster of workstations that belonged to the Eco-City team and into the small office assigned to me as Assistant Architectural Director. The door closed behind me with a soft click. I set my bag down, sat, and opened the laptop before my hands could start to shake.

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 16-A MORNING LIKE ANY OTHER

Anna's povI was already dressed when I opened Amyra’s door.“Time to get up, baby”, I said as I entered Amyra's room. She lay curled on her side, one arm under the pillow, and the other resting lightly over her chest. I sat on the edge of the mattress and brushed a curl from her forehead. Her eyes opened slowly. She blinked, then stretched both arms until her small fists trembled in the air. I waited until she sat up before guiding her toward the bathroom. The water ran warm. I helped her out of her sleep shirt and into the tub, washing her hair carefully so the soap would not sting her eyes. She hummed the days-of-the-week song under her breath while I rinsed the last of the shampoo. When I lifted her out and wrapped the towel around her shoulders, she leaned against me for a moment, still half-asleep, before I dried her off and reached for the yellow dress with the stars along the hem.She stood still while I buttoned the back, then turned in a slow circle so the skirt would flare. I

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 15- THE FIRST CRACK

Anna's POV The document room door closed behind me with a soft click.I set the recovered plots on the counter and pressed both palms flat against the cool surface. The brief contact of his hand on my arm still registered, warmth, pressure, the automatic strength of it. I drew one slow breath, then another, until the tightness in my chest eased enough to move.I sorted the sheets by number, stacked them neatly, and returned to my desk. The open floor continued its quiet rhythm. No one commented on the collision. I opened the West Ridge file and forced my attention onto the revised lighting calculations. An hour later a message appeared on my screen.“Conference Room B. West Ridge coordination. Now”.I gathered the latest prints and walked the short corridor. Andreas was already seated at the head of the table with two structural engineers and one project manager. He glanced up once when I entered, then returned his eyes to the tablet in front of him.I took the remaining chair and la
