Chapter 28 – The Queen Hidden
They all looked like red ants walking towards an anthill ready to serve their queen’s whims. Hope cursed at herself and this situation. Why did she pose as a concubine in the first place? Why didn’t she volunteer as a servant instead? Both had pros and cons, but at least servants get to run around the castle more freely than a concubine.
Like the other towers, the eighth was connected to the main castle through an open bridge, but it could be accessed too on the ground. Hope could see the seventh tower from where they passed—in a tiled pathway with no plants at all—and she could only stare at it with anticipation. Soon, she would be able to go there...very soon and all of these acting and being a woman would end.
To add to the effect, as per Mistress Nakti’s words, all concubines had to wear a mask. It only covered their eyes and nose, but their lips were open for kissing and for.
Chapter 29 – The Queen Meets Her OpponentOnce again, Mistress Nakti was disappointed to see Solene not dressed in a gown for the party. Instead of a gauzy material, she wore her platinum breastplate and pants, and instead of jewelries on her neck and hands, her helmet and gauntlet stayed in place. In the very beginning, Solene didn’t want to go to the celebration. Wearing her armor was her way of rebelling against Caym, and she relished the look of frustration on the caretaker’s face too when she emerged from her room.“You are a stubborn woman,” Mistress Nakti lashed before Solene could leave with the crow soldier. “I don’t wish you well on the second round. I wish you death.”Solene just created an enemy inside Caym’s castle, but she didn’t care. She ignored the old woman’s spiteful words and diverted her attention to the darkly lit hallway. With her scythe
Chapter 30 – The Queen Gains JusticeSneaking inside the seventh tower was easy. For some reason, there were no guards posted in every hallway entrance and in every room. Hope would have been prepared to encounter one or two during her search; this was the reason why she remained in this cursed gown after all—to seduce them and then incapacitate them—but there were no obstacles along her way.She wanted this, however. The better and quicker she could find Solene if there were no setbacks. Her wedge sandals brought her freely to different rooms: the first one was a gym, the second was an entire floor of training and sparring space, the third was the bath, and the fourth was the weapons’ room. She continued checking all the chambers in every floor, and with each opening of a door, Hope’s idea of the tower strengthened. The seventh tower, as it appears, was designed to be an arsenal and barracks. A one-sto
Chapter 31 – The Queen Clueless‘The second basement, in the dungeon of this tower,’ that was what Halpas said, and Hope was enraged to hear it.Out of all the places Solene was kept, it had to be a dungeon. She wasn’t a criminal. She wasn’t meant to be in that miserable place. She was the Queen of Sattus, and she should have been treated well more than the concubines in Caym’s tower! In haste, Hope jumped over a series of stairs, flew past hallways and stormed through doors until she reached the dungeons. She had a couple in her castle in Sattus, and she admitted, the rooms were as bleak and as dreary as the ones before her. Darkly lit with torches, humid, and full of equipment meant to torture—everything was a copy-cat.She encountered guards along the way—humanoid crows in their armors and spears—but she was skilled in hiding, using the shadows of the walls and beams t
Chapter 32 – The Queen Gains a ComradeHope returned to the eighth tower with ease and in the quickest time. She was certain now Solene was still there and with her there, she can act on her plan. The idea was to act like a concubine again serving drinks, seduce Solene in her armored form, and bring her to a secluded location in the guise of them fucking. No one would ever suspect that. Not even Caym, who was still clueless of their real identities. After fixing her mask, Hope strode to the open double doors with confidence in her chest. From where she was, she could see her beloved still sitting next to the bastard demon. And this time, true to the crow woman’s word, Solene took off her helmet. She wasn’t enjoying the party judging from the frown on her face, and like earlier, her eyes were busy searching...and it was clear to see now, she was actually searching for her.‘What twisted fate this is,’ H
Chapter 33 – The Queen Gains a DaggerIt was a party, but Solene couldn’t find any enjoyment in it. Zaraat had already declared her his next target. Hope was out there looking for her. She shouldn’t be sitting here and glaring at the guests. It was a waste of valuable time, but Caym was still beside her, and he expressly stated earlier he wanted her to stay until the end of the party. This meant evening. And this meant only a few hours before the second round starts. The other winners were still at the party too, so Solene couldn’t help but think, was this his way of testing them? If so, then she had better luck. She wasn’t drinking their wine too much. She was still of sane mind, while some of her humanoid counterparts were about to crawl on the floor.A soldier covered in metallic dark red armor approached the demon lord a few hours later. Solene wanted to know what they were discussing, but the soldier lowe
Chapter 34 – The Queen’s First OpponentA low, monotonous sound of one wind instrument stopped the noise of the audience. It reverberated all over the renovated arena, riding with the chill of the wind... Riding with the wind of death. There could never be a more fitting sound to herald the massacre they soon would witness, Solene thought. It mocked her ears, making her feel as if the tone was also playing her death.Once the sound stopped, it was followed by the same rhythmic thumping of drums she heard during the first round. The lower land in Solene’s front raised and leveled with her footing. It instantly created a pathway for her towards a megalithic wall entrance. With no doors to cover it, the opening boasted a chasm that flipped Solene’s stomach and threatened to spill her dinner.Another sound of trumpets filled the air, and the audience growled and cheered in unison. This was Solene’s cue. Thi
Chapter 35 – The St. Fair QueenAt the very end of the forest, Solene found a completely different landscape. It was still within the confines of the walls, but this time, instead of concrete and creeping vines, what surrounded her was metal. The walls were made of steel or iron. The rocks, logs and plants looked either encrusted with gold or were made of gold. Even the pathway wasn’t spared by its beauty—or to Solene its weirdness. She was in a maze filled with precious metals. What could actually go wrong? As she cautiously advanced, she noticed her reflection on every surface and at different angles. It was making the hairs on her skin stand on end. It was as if she was inside the house of mirrors, except there were no actual mirrors around her.She disliked being in this place. It made her feel vulnerable, unable to hide or to use the environment as a diversion just like what she did in the forest.Durin
Chapter 36 – The Queen’s PetThe silver demon audibly gasped after his ears heard her words.“A...St. Fair...conjurer,” he muttered, seemingly allowing its tongue a first taste of the name. “You’re a St. Fair conjurer?” He stepped back and gradually let out a hesitant laugh. “Ha, ha—hah—ha! That’s why Master Caym gives you such a special treatment! You’re a fucking celebrity here!”Solene didn’t understand what he was saying. She arched a brow just as her hands lowered to her chest with the yellow orb still pulsating, waiting to be released.“A celebrity?” she echoed.“You’re clueless?” the demon cocked his head to the side, amused with her situation. “Then let me fill you in, sweet. Your family had been a major contributor to this land. They sent so many demons to Gehenna than all the other co
