I swallowed my food as I watched the hunter closely.

I could tell his laughter had been forced.

The way he had made sure to keep his sword close by after our fight also made me alert.

But somewhere between him telling me his name and the ridiculously delicious food I had let my guard down.

I considered running as he grabbed his sword but now the smile on his face looked genuine.

I forced myself to relax. He was a human so he couldn’t be trusted. But I still knew that he wasn’t going to kill me- yet.

I could have made short work of him if I shifted earlier. The wolfsbane had already worn off. But I wasn’t going to shift soon after what had happened in my pack.

“Water.” I said.

He raised an eyebrow. “Your name is water?”

I stared at him without blinking.

He laughed and ran his hand through his bright red hair. His muscles flexed as he did it.

The motion was mesmerizing.

“At least give me a laugh after eating my food.” He said as he turned back to get water from the bowl close by.

  • MY SECOND-CHANCE MATE IS A WOLF HUNTER   CHAPTER 126: MORNING

When I returned to the camp, I couldn’t bring myself to look Phoenix in the eye.I had decided to actively lie to him. I hadn’t done it yet, but I knew I would if he asked that question. It seemed like an easy decision at first, but the longer I spent around him during the night trip, the more guilty I felt.Even when I ignored him, he still gazed at me kindly. I could see when he watched me from the corner of my eye. And I watched him at all other times. He had such a kind face. And I knew that it wasn’t just because he couldn’t be aggressive. I had seen him back at the inn. He could be intimidating when he wanted to. He just wanted to be kind to us.That was why I couldn’t take it when Carter laughed at Phoenix’s dream.I wanted to smack him unconscious, but I managed to barely restrain myself. But I didn’t quite understand Phoenix though. As much as I wanted to forget it, I had to accept that he was human. But his behavior was so strange for a human. He said he wanted to take down

  • MY SECOND-CHANCE MATE IS A WOLF HUNTER   CHAPTER 125: PHOENIX

Everyone was ready, so we went ahead with the journey. We were all familiar with the process at that time, so it didn’t get much attention. But the banter in the group was a lot less than before.I kept glancing at Morning throughout the journey, and she never once looked at me. I led our group, so I didn’t have the opportunity to simply turn back and talk to her.The trip had a very noticeable tension and intensity. You could cut it with a butter knife. But I soon forgot all about it as the navigation became more hectic. We had already traveled for three nights, so we were very close to the pack. That meant I had to be more accurate with my navigation. If I messed it up at this point, then any number of bad things could happen to us.For one, we could accidentally walk straight into the pack or encounter some unwelcome forces. But that possibility could be prevented with Kerrigan’s help. What I was most worried about was missing the pack entirely. Kerrigan couldn’t help me find it i

Morning returned not long after we concluded our talks for the afternoon. Her face was an expressionless mask and her gait was deliberate and soulless.I felt a sharp pain in my chest as soon as I saw her. Did I do that to her?I felt like beating myself up.Morning had approached me with good intentions, yet I ended up hurting her. What was wrong with me?Worst of all, Morning avoided my eyes when she came back. She simply went ahead with the rest of the group to prepare for our night trip. She moved quietly and didn’t even talk to anyone. I watched her head over to the river with Rowena and sighed.I sat against a tree as we waited for them. After they came back, we would head out for the evening, since everyone else had already finished with their preparations.I was left with my thoughts. How could I apologize to Morning when she wouldn’t even look me in the eye?I found myself wishing back for the time when she was actively trying to kill me. I preferred that to this. At least s

  • MY SECOND-CHANCE MATE IS A WOLF HUNTER   CHAPTER 123: MORNING

“Morning!” I heard Phoenix call my name. But I ignored him. My fists were clenched so tightly that I feared they might break. Tears brimmed in my eyes. I couldn’t turn back to face him. I took a detour around our camp. I couldn’t see anyone right now. I found a narrow tree and stood in front of it. I glared at the tree. I had an overwhelming urge to tear it apart and rip it to shreds. I resisted that urge. For the most part. I could help myself, and I ended up punching the tree. But at the last moment, I missed on purpose. My momentum carried me forward and I tripped. I fell face down on the forest floor. I stayed still after, not moving for a couple of seconds. Then I turned around to face the sky. The tree canopy wasn’t thick enough to completely conceal the sky. There was some sand on my face, but the grass on the ground prevented it from being excessive. I stared at the sky and I didn’t move. Tears flowed from my eyes and went straight to the ground. I hated Phoenix so

“We’re listening.” Rowena said with a smile.I coughed into my hand. This definitely wasn’t my best day.“So I haven’t actually formed a complete plan yet. I don’t have the information to make anything conclusive, and we’re going against the church here so we can’t be sloppy.” I said.Carter raised his hand. Rowena giggled.“Sorry to say. I just want to clarify that we are all on the same page here. You do remember not to involve me in your plans, right?” Carter asked.I sighed. “Yes, you will stay back in our camp while everything goes down.” I said.Carter nodded. “Alright. That’s good. I just wanted to make sure you didn’t forget and make any mistakes in your plan.” Carter clarified.“Trust me, I didn’t forget.” I assured him.Rowena’s eyes sparkled. “That’s all nice and cute, but do you mind telling us the rest of the plan captain?” She asked with a sly smile.“Captain?” I asked with a raised eyebrow.“What?” Rowena laughed. “Carter said it first, and I thought it looked cute. “I’m correct aren’t I?” Morning asked again after a moment of silence. She sounded more confident about it. And she had every right to be because she was completely correct.“Yes.” I admitted. “I didn’t want to bother you all for as long as possible.” I explained my intentions because it was mostly useless concerning her now that the cat was out of the bag.Morning immediately glared at me. I was completely taken aback by her sudden change in emotion. My body tensed up as the thought that she was about to attack me briefly flashed through my mind.“And you wanted to keep all the stress for yourself for as long as possible?” She asked with a dangerously low tone.“…” I was completely speechless and even when I tried talking, the words only got stuck in my throat.“You can be so selfish sometimes Phoenix.” Morning said. She didn’t shout or even say it loudly, but her enraged tone was as clear as day.Selfish???“Why do you want to share your burden alone? What do you think the rest of u
