I chuckled as she spat out the hot soup.

She tried cooling off her tongue by fanning it with her hand. And, of course, she made sure to glare at me too while she was at it. As if it was my fault somehow.

“Take it slow. If you’re hungry you don’t want to eat too much at a time.” I warned from experience. Not to mention that it was a lesson the Aspects made sure to drive into our heads.

I stood up to get her plate back from her. She had spilled all the soup on the ground.

I felt a pang of regret at the wastefulness, but I suppressed it.

I made the soup with a selection of herbs and rabbit meat. It was a common recipe at the church, because few had money for fancier meals. They taught me to be conservative in more ways than one.

I watched her closely as I grabbed her plate from beside her. She also watched me, but she didn’t attack.

That was a relief. She had proven to be a wild girl and I wasn’t looking to get into another tussle with her.
