"Bring him here." Ethan stood in front of the fireplace in the study, his arms crossed, the firelight throwing sharp shadows across his face. His voice left no room for negotiation. "Today, if possible. Tomorrow at the latest."

"No." I didn't even have to think about my answer. I set my coffee cup down harder than I meant to on the side table.

"Olivia, he's my son."

"And he's my whole life," I snapped. "You don't get to decide when he meets you. You don't get to decide anything about him yet, Ethan, not after one night."

"I've already lost six years." His voice rose, frustration bleeding through the careful calm he'd been holding since the hallway the night before. "I'm not losing another day of his life."

"That's not my fault."

"I'm not saying it is." He dragged a hand down his face, exhaling hard. "I'm saying I need this. I need to see him with my own eyes, not just a photograph on a phone screen."

"What you need and what's good for him are two very different things," I said, standing to match his height, refusing to be talked down to in this room. "He doesn't know you exist. You want me to walk him into a mansion full of strangers and tell him the man staring at him across the room is his father? He's six, Ethan. Not a business deal you can close by tomorrow afternoon."

"So what's your plan? Keep him hidden forever, three thousand miles away from a family that's already his?"

"My plan is to protect him," I said, my voice shaking now. "The way I've protected him every single day since he was born screaming into a hospital room with no one there but strangers."

"By keeping him from his own family."

"By keeping him safe from a family that let Madison Reed nearly destroy his mother before he was even conceived." My voice cracked on Madison's name and I hated that it did, hated how much power that memory still held over me. "You want to talk about rights, Ethan? Fine. I have the right to make sure my son isn't thrown into a house full of people who see him as a headline or an inheritance clause to be fought over in some lawyer's office."

Ethan flinched at that, but he didn't back down, his jaw setting stubbornly. "He's not a headline to me."

"He's a stranger's kid to everyone else in this house, and you know it."

We stood there glaring at each other across the study, both of us breathing hard, neither willing to give ground, the fire cracking softly in the silence between our words. Finally Ethan exhaled and looked away first, some of the fight draining visibly out of his shoulders.

"I'm not trying to take him from you," he said quietly. "I just don't know how to do this. I don't know how to be someone's father when I found out he existed three hours ago in a hallway at my own father's funeral."

Something in his voice, some genuine helplessness underneath all the demanding, softened me slightly despite everything. "Then don't try to fix it in one night," I said. "Give me time to think about how to even begin this."

"How much time?"

"I don't know yet." I turned toward the door, needing air, needing distance from the pull he still had over me even now. "But it will happen on my terms, or it won't happen at all. Do you understand me?"

"I understand," he said, though I could hear how much the words cost him.

"There's something else," I added, pausing at the door. "If we're going to do this at all, no one else in this house finds out about him yet. Not the staff, not extended family, no one. The fewer people who know, the safer he stays."

Ethan nodded slowly. "Agreed. Though I'll tell you now, keeping something like this quiet in a house this size never lasts as long as you want it to."

"Then we make it last as long as we can," I said. "That's all either of us can control right now."

He didn't argue further, and I took what little comfort I could from that small agreement between us, fragile as it was.

I left him standing by the fireplace and didn't look back, my heels echoing down the same hallway where this had all started less than a day ago.

Down the hall, in a room she'd claimed as her own since arriving uninvited days earlier, Madison Reed sat curled on a velvet chaise with a glass of wine untouched beside her, condensation pooling on the polished side table. She had heard enough of the argument through the old walls, enough to catch the words son and Noah and mine, and enough to understand exactly what all of it meant for her.

She set the wine down slowly, her manicured fingers tapping a slow, deliberate rhythm against the crystal stem, her mind already racing through every possible angle.

A child. Ethan's child. Old enough to have been conceived before she'd ever forced her way into an engagement with him, old enough to predate every claim she had spent years carefully building her entire future on top of.

If that boy was recognized by this family, if William had left anything behind naming him in some clause she hadn't yet found, then every plan she had spent seven years constructing, brick by careful brick, could collapse in a single afternoon.

Madison rose from the chaise and crossed to the window, staring out at the dark gardens below where Ethan and Olivia's argument still echoed faintly from the open window one floor above her own.

She had spent years making absolutely certain that Olivia Parker never came back into this house, never came back into Ethan's life, never came back to threaten anything at all.

Now it wasn't just Olivia she needed to worry about.

It was the boy. And boys, she reminded herself grimly, finishing the last of her wine in one long swallow, had a way of growing up whether anyone wanted them to or not.

Madison set the empty glass down and pulled out her own phone, scrolling through her contacts until she found the name she was looking for, an old associate from her father's law firm who owed her more favors than he'd ever admit to out loud. She typed out a careful message, deleting it twice before she settled on wording vague enough to protect her if it was ever found, specific enough to get her the answer she needed.

I need everything on file about William Hayes's estate planning from the last two years. Discreetly. Tonight if possible.

She hit send before she could second-guess herself, then crossed back to the window, watching the dark shapes of the garden hedges below. Somewhere out there, past the edge of the property, a stranger's car idled at the end of the long drive, headlights off, the same car that had been parked there for the better part of an hour.

Madison frowned, pressing closer to the glass, but the car pulled away before she could make out anything more than its shape. She told herself it was nothing, a lost driver or a curious neighbor, and stepped back from the window with her arms wrapped tight around herself.

But some old instinct, sharpened by seven years of careful lying, refused to let the sight go entirely. Someone else was watching this house tonight. And she intended to find out who, before that person found whatever it was they were looking for first.

The drive north felt endless, the detective's team coordinating in low, urgent voices over the radio while Olivia sat rigid beside me, her hands white-knuckled around each other in her lap. Neither of us spoke much, the silence heavy with everything we couldn't afford to think about too directly, not if we wanted to stay steady enough to actually help when the moment came.I kept glancing at her throughout the drive, at the fierce, unwavering focus holding her together, and found myself thinking, absurdly, of the first night I'd watched her play with Noah on Margaret's living room floor, the careful, guarded way she had let me in only inch by inch, and how far we had both come since then. I hoped, with an intensity that ached, that we would have the chance to come further still. We reached the perimeter of the property just before three in the morning, the lodge and the smaller building beside it barely visible through the trees under a sky heavy with clouds. Officers moved into posit

I stared at the name on the page, my mind refusing at first to accept what my father had written there in his own careful hand. Not Madison. Not anyone we had already suspected.Grant Whitfield. The financial director who had disappeared years ago, the man whose sudden severance had first caught my attention, the man I had spent days trying and failing to find. He hadn't vanished because Desmond had silenced him.He had vanished because he was Desmond's partner, working alongside him this entire time."He's had access to the company's internal systems for years," I said, the pieces slotting into place with sickening speed. "Even after he officially left, if he kept backdoor credentials, he could have authorized everything. The board motion. The falsified evidence against me. All of it.""He would have known exactly how to make it look like you," Olivia said. "He worked inside this company long enough to understand every system, every vulnerability."I paced the length of the study, th

  • MY SECRET ALPHA HEIR    CHAPTER 48: VICTORIA'S CONFESSION

I sat in the back seat of Ethan's car as we drove toward the bank, my hands folded tightly in my lap, and finally allowed myself to say the words I had been avoiding for seven years."I need to tell you both something before we get there," I said. "Something I haven't fully admitted, even to myself, until tonight."Olivia turned in the passenger seat to look at me, her expression guarded but attentive. "What is it, Mother?""Fear and greed made me cooperate with people I should have opposed from the very beginning." My voice shook, but I forced myself to continue, unwilling to let the confession die unfinished the way so many of my half-truths had before. "I didn't directly plan anything that happened to you, Olivia. I want you to understand that clearly. But my silence, my choice to protect my own comfort instead of speaking up when I first suspected something was wrong, helped create the conditions that allowed all of this to happen and keep happening for years.""You've already tol

  • MY SECRET ALPHA HEIR    CHAPTER 47: THE SEVEN-YEAR CONSPIRACY

I sat with Madison's confession long after Ethan left the room, the full shape of what had actually happened seven years ago finally settling into place with a clarity that made my chest ache in an entirely new way.Madison's lies hadn't been born from simple jealousy. They had been a tool, deployed at precisely the right moment to distract William, to keep him occupied with a family scandal while Desmond Cole quietly bled the company dry from the shadows he'd been hiding in for over a decade. My disappearance, my pregnancy, my six years of struggling alone in Los Angeles, all of it had been collateral damage in a war I hadn't even known existed until now."He used me," I said quietly, mostly to myself, when Ethan found me still sitting in the study an hour later. "Desmond Cole destroyed my entire life, not because of anything I did, but because I was simply in the way of a distraction he needed.""I know." Ethan sat down across from me, his own exhaustion plain across his face. "My f

  • MY SECRET ALPHA HEIR    CHAPTER 46: MADISON CORNERED

"Ethan, I think whoever has your son has been planning this for far longer than either of us understood."I stared at Madison, the fury I'd been holding onto for days warring with a colder, more useful focus. "You said he called himself an old business partner of my father's. Did he ever mention a name? Desmond?"Madison's eyes widened slightly. "How do you know that name?""Because we've already found his photograph in my father's hidden files," I said. "You've been talking to Desmond Cole for eighteen months, Madison. The man my father forced out of this company over twenty years ago."She pressed a trembling hand to her mouth, the full shape of what she'd been entangled in clearly landing for the first time. "I didn't know his history with your father. I swear it. He only ever presented himself as someone with resources, someone who could help me if my own position in this family ever became unstable.""What else did he ask you to do?""Small things, at first. Confirming details ab

  • MY SECRET ALPHA HEIR    CHAPTER 45: THE PRICE OF NOAH

I stared at the message until the words blurred together, my hands gripping the phone so hard I half expected the screen to crack beneath my fingers. Every instinct in me screamed to call the board, to salvage whatever remained of my position at Hayes Corporation before the entire structure collapsed around me.I ignored every single one of those instincts completely."I don't care about the company," I said, my voice steadier than I felt, steadier than I had any right to feel with my son's photograph still glowing on my screen. "Whatever it costs, whatever I lose, none of it matters until Noah is safe."Olivia stood beside me, her face pale but resolute, the stuffed wolf still clutched in one hand like a talisman she refused to set down. "We're not stopping the investigation," she said. "That's exactly what they want, and if we stop now, they'll have no reason to keep him alive once they get whatever else they're actually after.""I know." I paced the length of the security office, m
