LOGIN"A hundred million pack resources is a whole lot, Mommy," Zuberi said. He pointed his small finger at the glowing screen. "A big leader wants your special wolf healing powers. His inner wolf is totally broken."
I looked at the name on the message and made a mean sound in my throat.
"I am not going to save him," I said.
"But Mommy," Zuberi said, his eyes going wide. "You can buy a whole new territory with that much resource! Why did you say no so fast?"
"Because he is a bad wolf," I told him. I ripped the fake freckled mask off my face and threw it on the table. "He hurts weak omegas to get more power. Bad wolves like him are always the most scared to die. He cannot buy my heart."
"This is why you stopped being a famous pack healer, right?" Zuberi asked. He looked at me with giant eyes full of love. "Now you just help the Alpha Council find out how rogue wolves died."
"Living wolves are too greedy," I said. I washed my face with cold water. "They think pack resources can buy anything. I would rather look at old bones and help the dead."
"I think you are the coolest mommy in the world," Zuberi said.
I laughed and patted his head. "Of course I am. Everyone loves me."
Zuberi looked at my real face for a second. Then he looked down at his shoes. "Mommy, that little girl who hugged you at the Ravenmoor International Gateway today. She really looked a lot like you."
My hands stopped moving. My heart went so fast it hurt.
I thought about my own little babies. Five years ago, after I gave birth in the dark, Ayomide took my two pups away. She hated me so much. They were probably dead now.
If my little girl is still alive, I thought, she would be the exact same age as that sweet pup from the gate.
The next morning, my loud phone woke me up at five o'clock. It was totally dark outside. I picked it up, feeling very sleepy.
"Zanele, I am sorry to wake you up so early," Head Guardian Jabari Kane said through the phone. "But some guards found black bags full of wolf bones down by the Bloodmoon River. The water ruined the scent tracks. We need our best pack bone reader right now."
"Send me the exact spot, Jabari," I said, rubbing my eyes. "I will be there in fifteen minutes."
I kissed Zuberi while he was sleeping. Then I glued the ugly freckled mask back onto my skin. My beautiful face vanished, and I looked like an ordinary, plain omega again. Only my bright eyes stayed the same.
I drove fast to the river bank. The Alpha Council had put up red flags everywhere. A big guard in heavy armor stepped in front of my path.
"Stop right there, girl," the guard barked at me. "This territory is locked. No outer wolves can come in."
"I am Zanele Okafor," I said. I pulled out my silver Alpha Council badge and held it up to his nose. "The Head Guardian called me himself."
The guard looked at the silver badge and his mouth fell open. He looked at my ugly face, then back at the badge. He looked so silly. The special bone reader did not have to follow his rules. She was the boss here.
"I am sorry, ma'am," he said quickly. He bowed his head. "Please come this way."
I walked down to the wet mud by the water. There were three big bags on the grass, and one was torn open. There was dark wolf blood all over the ground. Two young pack healers in white robes were taking pictures, but their hands were shaking. They looked like they were going to throw up because the smell of dead wolf was so bad.
I rolled up my sleeves and knelt right in the mud. I opened my bag of sharp silver tools.
"You two are moving way too slow," I told them.
The young girl healer got a very red face. She looked at my ugly mask and got super mad.
"Who do you think you are?" she screamed at me. "You are just an ugly omega! You cannot tell us what to do!"
"Of course I am willing," Riven’s cold, smooth voice purrs over the shadow-line communicator, his words laced with a quiet, dangerous satisfaction. "You saved old Alpha Lucien Nightfang’s life during the silver-plague outbreak in the badlands. Escorting the most lethal Healer in the realm is a privilege the entire shadow network would kill for."I tighten my grip on the obsidian receiver, my wolf pacing uncomfortably within my ribs."Riven," I say, my tone dropping into a hard, unyielding warning. "I am attending the gathering at the Eclipse Den strictly to monitor Alpha Lucien's heart parameters after his moon-vein surgery. If you attempt to use my presence to feed rumors that we are sealing a pack bond, I will personally paralyze your vocal cords with nightshade extract."A dark, husky chuckle echoes through the speaker. "Always so defensive, Zanele. I need a formidable female by my side to keep the ambitious high-born she-wolves of the Northern Cl
"Where is the rogue female who dared to sink her fangs into your throat?" Idris Blackthorne rumbles, his towering frame casting a dark, suffocating shadow over the marble entry of the Blackthorne Bloodmoon Citadel. My inner wolf recoils as his absolute Alpha aura crashes through the foyer, thick with the scent of pine, ozone, and unadulterated rage. I press my shoulders back, masking the phantom ache in my healing chest where my mark-bond bleeds.Chief Obinna Okafor, standing by the obsidian hearth with a half-empty glass of spiced blood-wine, doesn't even bother putting down his drink. "You mean Zanele? She's back at her Mooncrest Villa, probably plotting your demise. And if you intend to drag a war-band into her territory to slaughter her, I suggest you take Kieran with you. I have zero interest in mopping up rogue blood tonight."Idris’s golden eyes snap into dangerous, narrow slits, his lip curling over a gleaming white fang. "Don't you dare speak her
"Why are you bringing up marriage when you know my place is in the shadows?" Ayomide Okafor rasps out, her voice trembling with manufactured grief as she dabs at the corners of her eyes.Magnus Wraith’s chest expands, a low, ancient growl vibrating deep within his throat. He stares down at her with fierce, protective devotion, placing his heavy hand over hers. "What nonsense are you spouting, silly child? Six years ago, when my lungs collapsed in the outer forest after the rogue ambushed my transport, it was your hand that drove silver steel into my chest to purge the trapped blood! You saved my life, and you bear the bloodline of the Okafor Moonfang Clan. You are the only female worthy of becoming the Supreme Luna of the Blackthorne Bloodmoon Citadel!"Ayomide lowers her gaze, her long lashes shadowing the dark, panicked flicker in her eyes. She takes a tiny, deliberate sip of her herbal tea, using the porcelain cup to hide the sudden, cold sweat breaking
"Elder Wraith," Jerome’s voice cuts through the thick, suffocating tension filling the private recovery ward, his broad shoulders squared inside the dark tactical fatigues of the border enforcement unit.Magnus Wraith freezes, his golden eyes narrowing as he studies the young warrior’s muscular frame. He hadn't recognized the male wolf at first glance. But looking closer at the brutal scar running along his jawline and the dark, blood-red crest of the northern guard stitched into his collar, the realization strikes him. This is the missing grandson Finley had spent years searching the badlands to locate. Finley had spilled oceans of blood for the pack during the early territory wars, sacrificing his own family bonds to secure their borders. Now that he had finally recovered his lost bloodline, the old general guarded the boy like sacred pack gold.Jerome’s head tilts slightly in genuine surprise as he locks eyes with the ancient former Alpha King. "Wh
"Let go of me, Idris," I gasp out, forcing my voice into an icy, unyielding shield as his broad, muscle-bound chest pins me deeper into the heavy sheets. His dark, golden eyes flare with raw predator heat, his towering frame exuding the intoxicating, suffocating scent of rain and crushed pine. Every single instinct inside my body is screaming at me to submit, to let his rough hands strip away my thin tunic and yield to the terrifying pull of his possessive Alpha aura. My wolf is practically clawing at the walls of my mind, begging to feel his heavy weight, begging to let his knot seal us together forever. He is intoxicating. Like a lethal poison crafted specifically to shatter my defenses.Does he actually feel the ancient pull of a mate-bond for me? Or am I merely a temporary obsession, an unranked female whose battle scars intrigue him? What about the mother of Jabari and little Amara? What about Ayomide Okafor, who claims to carry his mark in the high halls o
"Grandpa Obinna, Zanele did not orchestrate her own injuries," Kieran Ashford insists, his voice echoing off the stone walls of the central assembly hall. "She threw herself between a silver-coated crossbow bolt and little Amara! I am telling you, if she had not intervened, our bloodline heir would be dead!""I am well aware she shielded Amara!" Chief Obinna Okafor snarls, his clawed hands slamming down onto the heavy oak council table. "Yet this pack wing is crawling with high-ranking beta healers and lunar herbalists. Why must the Supreme Alpha of the Blackthorne Bloodmoon Pack spend his days personally cleaning the wounds of an unbonded rogue? What if that female uses his possessive instincts to force a high-court mate-bond and claim the Luna throne?"Kieran lets out a sharp, frustrated breath, adjusting the leather straps of his dark tactical armor. He has only dealt with Zanele a handful of times, but his sharp tracking instincts know she isn't seeking political p
"I am Zanele Okafor, the special bone reader, and I am here to work," I said.I pulled on my thick white gloves and ignored their angry faces. I reached down and picked up a heavy, stinky piece of wolf bone from the muddy grass. I did not even blink at the bad smell."The Head Guardian gave me the
"You let her out of your sight, Magnus?"The words did not just come out of his mouth. They shook the heavy wooden beams of the Blackthorne Pack Manor. Supreme Alpha Idris Blackthorne sat on the wide stone bench, his black tunic tight across his broad shoulders. His dark skin and sharp jaw looked h
"Where is my drink, sweetheart?" I asked.I had to change my voice so nobody would know who I was."I got it right here, Mommy!" Zuberi Blackthorne said. He handed me the cold can with a huge smile. He looked so beautiful in his little blue clothes. His long eyelashes looked like a doll, and all th
