Adriel’s eyes snapped open to the sharp smell of antiseptic and the steady beep of machines.

Ignoring the dull headache throbbing behind his temples, Adriel slowly sat up and stared around the sterile room in disbelief.

White walls. Fluorescent lights. An IV line taped to the back of his hand.

From the look of things, Adriel needed no one to tell him where he was. But the last thing he remembered was dropping his mother and Michael off at the upscale restaurant.

A gift he had insisted on so he

Adriel’s black SUV screeched to a halt in the mansion’s driveway. He killed the engine and stormed out, still wearing the torn hospital gown under a coat he found in the car.Blood dripped from his side, but the pain was nothing compared to the fury burning inside him.He pushed through the front door with such force it slammed against the wall, and stormed inside, heading straight to Nyla's room. As soon as he arrived, Adriel stopped abruptly as he saw Lucas standing in front of Nyla’s door, knocking repeatedly. Hard, insistent knocks that had clearly been going on for a while.Adriel’s eyes narrowed. He walked up slowly and tapped Lucas twice on the shoulder. Lucas jumped, startled, and spun around. "Adriel? Jesus, you scared me.”“What are you doing here?” Adriel asked, fixing his blazing eyes on him.Lucas gulped down and gestured at the closed door. “I’ve been here for almost three hours now, knocking. Nyla won’t respond. I don’t know what the problem is. She’s been locked in

Adriel stormed down the sterile hospital corridor, his fists clenched tightly at his sides as Nyla’s face kept flashing through his mind. Why was she there? What the hell had she gotten herself into?He turned a corner sharply, but suddenly collided with someone who was hurrying toward a ward to see a patient.“Watch where you’re—”Adriel stopped mid-snarl as his eyes landed on the woman right in front of him. It was none other than his mother, Ariella. “Adriel?!” Ariella screamed with wide eyes. “Oh my God, Adriel!”“Mom?” Adriel blinked, caught off guard. “What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be at La Belle Époque with Michael?”Ariella ignored him and burst into tears instead. Without hesitation, she rushed forward, and began to check him frantically, his arms, his chest, and the blood on his gown.“How could I enjoy a date after getting a call that my son had been shot?!” she cried. “They said you were brought in unconscious. I thought… I thought—”“I’m fine,” Adriel

Nyla paced around the room restlessly, while Adriel’s voice echoed in her ears over and over."You will sit on my lap at dinner, call me brother sweetly, and let me touch you while he watches."She bit her lower lip and shook her head violently. There's no way she'd allow that to happen. Not in front of Lucas. Not in front of her father and Ariella. But what could she do? She'd already signed the agreement papers to obey his orders, what will become of her if she does otherwise?Nyla stopped abruptly and narrowed her eyes as a desperate idea popped into her head. It's an idea of a substance she could use on Adriel. Something strong enough to knock him out until the following morning. There'd be no dinner, no humiliation, and no victory for him.Nyla smiled broadly as she pondered on it, picturing the whole scenario. Everything seemed perfect, the plan, the execution, it made her heart gladdened.Suddenly, her face crumbled as another thought slipped into her mind. The mansion was wi

Nyla stood at the private balcony, her arms wrapped tightly around herself, as she stared at the blank wall.“Nyla?”Lucas’s gentle voice echoed in her ears loudly. She turned and found him stepping out onto the balcony, the wind ruffling his shirt. “You disappeared after lunch,” he said, stopping a respectful distance away. “You looked… broken when I saw you earlier. And the way Adriel reacted when he walked in on uu..." He paused for a while, before concluding."It was strange. Did something happen between you two?”For one desperate second she wanted to tell him everything. Lucas had always been safe, kind, the boy who once defended her in college when Adriel’s cruelty went too far.Nyla tried to speak, but her throat suddenly tightened as the memory of Adriel’s cold warning surged through her mind."One wrong move and your father pays."She shook her head, forcing a brittle smile. “It’s nothing. Just… adjusting to everything. New house, new family. It’s a lot.”Lucas studied her
