I stirred from my half-slumber, disoriented and tangled in the twilight haze. The gentle rap on my door echoed throughout the room, jolting me into consciousness. As I blinked, I realized night had arrived.

I stood up from the bed and walked to the door, which I opened to reveal the maid I had knocked out a few days before. She had paper bags in her hand.

“Hy,” I smiled and waved at her, with a heavy burden of guilt inclined on my shoulders.

Her face was straight, and she did not reciprocate the smile. I cleared my throat.

“I apologize for the last time, and...”

“You do not have to apologize for that. Mr. Dante assigned me permanently to you,” she said, and I tried to keep a smile on my face.

I had never been assigned a personal maid, and now that I had the opportunity, it had to be her; I was really on a losing streak.

“He says he will be home in an hour, and you should be ready,” she said, and I made way for her to enter the room. “The name’s Lee,” she said.
