13. His deadly obsession

The whole way home, Nikolai didn't say a single word. He just drove toward my hell, gripping the steering wheel so tightly that I am sure his knuckles turned white under the blood of those bastards.

I stayed silent too, looking anywhere but at him. My body was as stiff as a board, my mind racing with millions of thoughts.

The car came to a halt in front of his mansion, and before I could even collect my thoughts, he was already out of the car. The next thing I knew was that my side of the door yanked open, and he pulled me out of the car roughly yet cautiously.

I kept my head down as we passed the servants. Their eyes were heavy with sympathy, and I hated it. That look. That pity. It only added to the humiliation burning in my veins.

Without a single word, Nikolai shoved me inside the room and locked the door. I turned around to face him. He kicked off his shoes and I braced myself for his rage. For him to lash out, scream, or worse, beat me.

But nothing like that happened.

The kiss wasn’t just a claim; it was a brand. His hands moved to my back, pressing me closer as if he wanted to mold me to him permanently. And I melted. I melted in his arms perfectly, as if I were made for it. A traitorous moan escaped my throat when his lips moved to the sweet spot behind my ear, leaving a trail of kisses along my jawline. He wasn't just kissing me with his lips, but he was worshipping me. With each kiss, it felt like he was burning his name in my flesh. My fingers curled into his damp hair to push him away but instead, I found myself holding him tighter. My body was betraying me. “See?” he smirked against my collarbone, dragging his tongue along the sensitive skin. “You can deny me all you want, but this…” His hand slid down, squeezing my thigh possessively. “This reaction? It’s all mine.”I gasped when my breathing became erratic. My resolve was crumbling under his gentle touch. My body was melting, becoming a putty in his hands. The undeniable heat roused i

Betrayed. That’s exactly how I feel right now, and that too by my own body.Shame burned in my chest, hotter than the fever wracking my body. How could I? How dare I take pleasure from the same hands that shattered my world? The same fingers that killed my family. How could I stoop so low? For a few moments of pleasure, how could I forget what he did to me? A soft knock on the door disrupts my thoughts, irritating me further. "Go away! I don’t want anything," I snap, for the fifth time today. My voice is hoarse from the cold I caught yesterday, all thanks to him. My body is burning with fever, and my throat is raw and clogged with cough, making it difficult for me to speak and breathe. The contrast between hot and cold is unbearable, leaving me exhausted. But more than that, I miss my father and brother. After my mother died, they became overprotective of me. When I was sick, they took care of me like a child, fussing over me and making sure I was comfortable no matter how busy

I was running wildly in the open field, the cold breeze brushing through my hair, making it flow behind me in waves. The warm golden glow of the setting sun spread over everything. My crackles of pure happiness filled the open field along with the soft ruffles of leaves. The sweet scent of wildflowers filled the air as my fingers grazed them while I ran. “Run, Alessia, run... while you still have time,” a deep, familiar voice called out behind me.I turned my head slightly and saw a silhouette of a strong, well-built man. A playful smile made its way to my lips as I pushed my legs harder, determined to outrun him.“I will run so far that you won’t be able to catch me!” I chirped, my voice resonating with pure delight. A deep and dark chuckle followed my loud and carefree laugh. "You are mine, Alessia, and you can't outrun me. There is no escape from me." His words sent a shiver through me, but before I could react, strong arms wrapped around me possessively. My body instantly mel

I had been waiting for Nikolai to return for two hours now, biting my lips in anticipation. I just couldn't wait to see his reaction. I just wanted to soak in the frustration on his face, knowing that, at least for once, he was not in control. Since evening, I had been doing my little happy dance in the room. Our plan had worked. Dimitri was able to take down his clients, leaving Nikolai with nothing. I had celebrated it by eating so much that even the servants were surprised. They were probably wondering if I had finally accepted my fate here. If only they knew. I slumped back further into the pillow, holding the book tightly as I tried to focus on the words to pass the time. Just then, the door to the room opened. My head snapped up to see Nikolai entering as if he owned the place, which he did.I was more interested in his expressions. His jaw was tightly clenched, and the way he exhaled sharply told me he wasn't pleased. In fact, he looked furious.Behind him, a maid entered,

Dimitri stood a few feet away with his gun raised and pointed directly at us. My heart leapt to my throat as I tried to make sense of what was happening. I had known Dimitri was planning something, but I never expected him to act so recklessly. Nikolai is already in a bad mood due to his shipment. I am sure he wouldn’t think twice before killing Dimitri. "Welcome," Nikolai muttered under his breath, calmly. This calm demeanor of Nikolai is more terrifying than his angry one. "There is no need to get scared, Alessia." Dimitri said holding the gun tightly with both of his hands. "I am here to save you from this monster" Nikolai let out a low chuckle, tilting his head as he studied Dimitri. "Save her?" He arched a brow. "From me?" He tsked, shaking his head. "How adorable." "If you don't want to die, move aside, Nikolai, and let Alessia come to me," Dimitri warned. Nikolai exhaled sharply and stepped aside. My eyes widened in surprise. "He loves you a lot, doesn't he?" The gun felt heavy in my hand, my fingers trembling as they curled around the trigger. I hadn't intended to touch it but Nikolai threw it at me. It was about to hit my face so I wasn't left with any other option than to catch it. "Don't!" Nikolai warned me as I was about to throw it away, "If I catch it, then I won't hesitate to shoot your lover with the last bullet. I am already eager to do that. It's better if you play along!" I swallowed hard. My gaze flicked to Dimitri, who silently urged me to keep it. My heart raced in my chest when Nikolai sat in a chair with a dangerous calmness. "Be a man, Dimitri." Nikolai tilted his head. "Have a seat." Dimitri clenched his jaw tightly, his eyes narrowing at Nikolai. He pulled another chair and sat in front of Nikolai. Both of them were now sitting in front of me. My gaze shifted between them as they had a cold war with their eyes, no one ready to back down. Finally, Nikolai turned his head to me, breaking the silence. "The gun you

Nikolai's attention was fully on me, making sure I was fine when Dimitri attacked him from behind. A loud gasp escaped my lips when Dimitri pulled him back with his collar, whirled him around, and punched straight at his jaw. But Nikolai was quick to gain control over the situation. He was quick to sidestep just in time. The force of the missed punch sent Dimitri stumbling forward. Dimitri was about to crash into me, but Nikolai grabbed him by the collar and yanked him back before he could. Dimitri's eyes were flashing with pure fury. “You were always reckless,” Nikolai mused, rotating his neck. His voice was calm, but the sharp and wild storm in his eyes told a different story. “And that’s why you’ll never beat me.” "Shut the hell up!" Dimitri shouted, which flinched me at my place. And in a fit of fury, Dimitri punched Nikolai again, and this time in the rib. A grunt escaped Nikolai’s lips, not of pain but of amusement. “Oh?” Nikolai smirked, provoking Dimitri “That’s all

A loud, painful scream echoed in the whole room. My eyes squeezed shut, and the gun slipped through my hands, hitting the ground with a clatter. The scent of gunpowder filled the air, burning my nostrils and making my stomach churn. A loud thud made me slowly open my eyes and the first thing I saw was a pool of blood with a man lying in it. My breath hitched in my throat. The only difference was when I expected it to be Nikolai, it was Dimitri. My breath came in sharp gasps, my heart pounded so violently it felt like it would burst out of my chest. Dimitri was writhing on the floor, holding his shoulder from which blood oozed continuously. The knife lay beside him. His breaths were ragged and uneven. I shot him.Oh God. I shot him."You bastard!" Dimitri spat, "You’re a damn cheater!"My chest heaved up and down. The moment the intruder's face came into the light, the gun wobbled in my grip before slipping from my hands with a loud clatter. My breath hitched in my throat. Everything seemed to cease in those moments. My heart pounded so hard that it was deafening. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't blink. I was afraid he might disappear from my sight if I blinked. Am I being delusional or what? Because right in front of me stood Nikolai. My Nick. My mind refused to accept what my eyes were showing me. The doctor told me he had died and had already been buried, that I lost him forever, that he would never come back again, but he was standing right here, right in front of me, tall and very much alive. But he looked very weak. His eyes were tired and sunken. Yet they lit up the moment they caught my gaze in the darkness. Both of us were frozen in our places. "Nick," I whispered to myself. It was such a low murmur that I was sure he didn't hear it, but maybe he heard the voice o

The applause that followed my crowning ceremony was deafening. It should have made my heart swell with pride, but it didn’t. I couldn't immerse myself completely in happiness because something was missing. It wasn't just anything; it was the biggest part of my life. Nikolai. This place was and is rightly his. I am merely filling his space to prevent the throne from falling into the wrong hands. I was strong all this time, but I am unsure how I will rule this Empire alone. Drawing a deep breath, I stepped down from the stage with slow and steady steps, ensuring that I kept my chin high to prevent the crown from falling. It is not just a crown; it is a heavy responsibility that rests on my head. People bowed before me, and a few came forward to congratulate me with warm words. "Congratulations, La Regina,” they said. “You’ve made history.” I mumbled a small thank you with a soft smile on my lips. I could see that a few of them were faking their smiles. Of course, not everyone ca

“This is mine!” Marco roared, pointing to the throne behind us “I built this! I cleaned the blood! I earned every piece of this empire while you were out living in your bubble!”“You stole what was never yours to begin with,” I said, in a low but steady voice. “You manipulated the system, lied to the council, and betrayed your own bloodline. The only thing you’ve earned is a disgrace.” I spat venomously. He opened his mouth to say something, but before he could, I cut him off. "Nikolai transferred his property in my name with the hope that I will raise our child and give him everything he deserves. I can not let anyone snatch my baby's right" I stated. Silence spread in the hall, and Marco broke. “You think you can fool everyone with that belly and a couple of forged papers?” he spat. “You don’t know anything about ruling an empire, Alessia. You’re just a spoiled little brat and we are not even sure if you are carrying Nikolai's blood!”Unable to stop myself anymore, I slapped him

“My birth certificate, my documents, and even DNA tests, if you want,” I said coolly. “All prove I was born of the legal wife of Mr. Rossi. I am the only legitimate heir; Marco is...” “Enough!” Mr. Rossi roared as I started opening his cards one by one, cutting me off mid-sentence. The dirty secrets he has been hiding from everyone for so long are now being exposed, and he just can't stand it. I have always considered Marco my real brother because he never let me feel otherwise, but only we family members know the truth. He was not my mother's son. He was the result of my father's betrayal. "I haven't even started, Dad," I said, infusing the word with honey-dripped venom. “What are you implying?” one of the council members asked, frowning. “How could you make such a serious accusation against your own father and brother?” “Whose father? Which brother?” I asked sharply, turning to the man with fire in my eyes. “They both died for me the day they tried to kill me.” The hall

"NO" Silence. Ear-deafening silence. This is what spread after I announced my decision. A single word detonated like a bomb. First, they were not expecting me to be here, and after knowing the reason behind my presence, they were definitely not expecting this answer from me. My father flinched in his position, and Marco's smile vanished. "What did you just say?" Marco growled near my ear, narrowing his eyes at me. He couldn't believe his ears. "I said no," I repeated just for him, just in case he didn't hear me. I turned slightly to face the Mafia council. "I am not ready to give my consent to make him a mafia king," I declared. The council members exchanged looks of confusion among themselves. The crowd gasped and whispered amongst themselves. "Any particular reason behind it?" The senior-most council member asked. "My husband built this Empire with his blood and sweat. He didn't inherit it; he earned it through scars. Before handing it over to someone else,

Black dress... This is what you are supposed to wear for the mafia king's crowning ceremony. It is a sign of power and mourning for the bloodshed that leads to the throne. It is a old tradition. That's why I wore white! Because I wasn’t here to mourn. I was here to defy. The black dress sent by Marco lay in the corner of the room like a rag while I slipped into a satin white gown, which I was meant to wear on my wedding day. I chuckled to myself. What irony. The silence in the room pressed into my skin like needles. I stood in front of the mirror, staring blankly at my own reflection. The dark circles under my eyes were clearly visible, and I hadn’t even tried to hide them. Let the world see what this house has done to me. My hair fell messily over my shoulder. I picked up a brush, and, as usual, I was about to tie it up when I remembered that the other women would have styled their hair into stiff buns because this was what was required of them today. So, I won't! I droppe

Thirty hours... it has been thirty hours since I last had a bite. The hunger was burning in my stomach, but what was worse was the thirst. My tongue felt like sandpaper, and my head pounded as if someone were hammering it from the inside. At one point, when I couldn't hold it anymore, I went to the bathroom and took a few sips to keep my baby alive. Marco knows the condition of my baby. He knows that I need not only meals but also the medicines for my baby to live, and he is still doing this. I don't have any purpose to live anymore. With Nikolai gone, I would have gladly given my life too, but in all this, my baby is suffering. It has nothing to do with betrayal, power, or position. I have spent the entire day lying lifeless on the bed, staring at the ceiling as if it held answers. Tears dribbled down the sides of my eyes, dampening the pillow. The only sound that could be heard in the room was the soft ticking of the antique clock on the wall. My stomach groaned again, but I d

The room was silent. Too silent. The only sound that could be heard was the curtains hitting against the windowpane, occasionally broken by my silent sobs. I sat on the floor with my legs folded, my head resting on the edge of the bed, my arms limping at my sides. My hair was a mess, my lips cracked to the point that blood started to appear under the skin, and my throat was dry from all the screaming, sobbing… and the silence that followed. It's been seven days since I was brought here. I had cried so much; I didn’t know if there were tears left in me anymore. But pain? Pain never seemed to run out. I was once again in my father's house, but now these walls felt cold and hollow. It isn't my home anymore. I left the place that was truly my home: the arms of my Nikolai. "Nick." His name escaped my lips in a whisper. My lips hadn't grown tired of calling him again and again, hoping that it would bring him back, as if my voice could somehow reach the other side. But

The nurses around me looked down with sympathy, but I didn't care. My heart was too heavy; the pain was too much. My body shook with the force of my sobs. My throat burned. My heart felt like it was bleeding. “I didn’t get to say goodbye…” I wept, “I didn’t get to tell him I love him… that I remember everything… that I never wanted to leave…” It felt like the pain would kill me; it was tearing me apart from the inside. “He never gave up on me,” I whispered. “Even when I did.” I cried out my heart. I wasn't just broken; I felt empty inside. "Ma'am, please control yourself," one of the nurses said from above. "For the sake of your baby," she added. "The baby's condition is already very fragile. We don't want you to lose it as well." Instead of giving me strength, her words broke me further. My head tilted to the cei
