DANI

The briefing was simple and short. I followed what they told me to do, not to provoke my father, sit where they told me to, and never admit that I met Terzo.

Honestly, I wasn’t good at lying, especially when I would intentionally lie because I hated liars who unhingedly lie to my face.

I stepped out of the cab and fixed my blazer. God, the drivers here drove like lunatics. I thought I wouldn’t make it alive. I felt my stomach flip, and I wanted to throw up, but I took a deep breath and fixed my blazer again before I walked into the restaurant.

Yes, I took a cab from the hotel, but the guys from Osmium were tailing me from the black SUV.

My heart started pumping so hard that I clutched my bag tightly to balance. I was nervous and terrified that this plan might not work. One of the guys told me that I should wear a bug so that they could listen to our conversation, but Terzo and Lynx disagreed, and I felt like they had a plan inside this plan.

Terzo knew how my father worked. He

TERZOWe’d been traveling nonstop for the last two weeks. Dani was resilient, like always. She was strong and determined to get the job done. I only had one problem. She barely slept at night. Most of the time, she didn’t even know I was awake, watching her.“What’s on your mind?”“We’re five minutes away from what I once called home. I prepare a speech when I face the person whom I call mom. Now, I don’t know what to say or do when she’s in front of me. Shall I tell her the truth? I’m not confused. I just never got disgusted with someone the way I do right now.”“I know you need closure, but you don't have to face her. All you have to do is move on.”She looked right into my eyes. “If you were in my position, what would you do?”“You don’t want me to answer that. And I don’t want you to do anything for revenge. You won’t feel the same after that. Trust me. The satisfaction you feel won’t last, but the repercussions do.”“Is that what happened when… you?” Before she looked away, I saw

DANII brought flowers to my parents’ graves. Ronan removed the dried flowers he brought the last time he visited. “I didn’t know what to say because no words can express how much I missed you, even if I just remembered you a few days ago. I wish my memory came sooner. I wish I weren’t taken away. I wish I didn’t lose my accent. I wish I had grown up in that house and finished college so that I could hang my diploma next to our family picture. I hope you are proud of me.” I wiped my tears away. “I’m alive, Mommy, Daddy. I survived. Please, look after me. Look after my husband, the man who never gave up looking for my real family. He should get all the credit for his resilience. Please look after the people I love, including Ronan, who never gave up on me. I love you both, forever and always.”I still wanted to say something. I still wanted to sit down there and tell them about my life for the past twenty years. I had a lot of stories to tell them. I just wish there were a part of it.

TERZO“Hey, hey, hey.” It was a good thing I was fast enough to catch her before she fell. I carried her bridal style while Ronan ran outside the office to get water. “Sweetheart, can you hear me?”“Yeah.” She squinted her eyes as she looked at me. “You’re so handsome like a dark fallen angel.”I smiled and took her to the couch. I sat down and let her stay on my lap. “I take that. Don’t move. Are you dizzy?”“Kind of. I remember something, and it flashed back at me so fast.”“Do you need anything, ma’am? Maybe you should rest. I prepared a room for all of you.” Ronan came back with a glass of water. “Thank you, Ronan. We booked hotel rooms in town, but we’d love to stay for a night, if it’s okay.”“Are you kidding me, Mr. Siciliano? We’d love it if you stayed here for good,” he said excitedly.Dani drank the water and thanked the old man. “I remembered having a doll. Sometimes, the arm fell off. I used to grab my mother’s lipstick and put it on my doll’s face.”“I think it’s still t

DANII stared at Terzo for several seconds just to let the words ‘I love you so fucking much’ sink in my brain. It seemed terrifying and overwhelming at the same time. And Terzo telling me that he loved seemed non-existent. I mean, why me? How did he learn to love me after—”“Dani?” I felt his thumb tracing my cheek, wiping off my tears. “Why do you love me after I shot you?”“Why can’t I love you after you shot me? I got shot because of me. I came to you, approached you, and you were terrified over a stranger trying to kidnap you back home. But since then, I never stopped thinking about you.”I smiled. “If I’m being honest, I didn’t just marry you because I wanted to protect you or because my father said so. I chose you. I made that decision, and there’s no way I’m letting you go after that.”I sagged into his arms and cried. Terzo was literally the only family I had left, the only person I could rely on, and I trusted him with my life despite our rocky start.“You didn’t just say

DANIIt had been eight hours since Terzo left. He hadn’t come back or called back. I sent him a text message, but it was left unseen. I wasn’t worried. Scratch that. I was terrified, knowing that he didn’t tell me what he was going to do, yet deep inside me, it was dangerous.“Dani,” Marco called me from the couch. His gaze locked on the TV screen, and he turned the volume louder. My feet brought me there with him while I watched the news on TV. “Oh, my God.” My hand is on my mouth. “Why would she commit suicide? She didn’t look depressed or anything. In fact, she was great and sexy.”“Good job, boss,” Marco mumbled. I almost did not catch what he said. “What did you just say?” I gripped his arm so that I could get his attention.“She’s a rat,” he replied without looking at me.“Oh, shit.” Now, it made perfect sense why he was so angry, determined to fly back. “She’d been working for my—” I swallowed the bile rising in my throat. “She was Francesco’s confidante?”“Yeah. I knew she

TERZOShe changed her outfit from what she wore earlier. She wrapped her body in a trench coat, and I knew exactly what she was wearing inside. She locked the door behind her, ran her fingers through her dark wavy hair when she noticed me watching her.“Hey.” Her red lips spread into a smile. She had no idea this was the last time she would see me. She had no idea what she had walked into. And she risked her life with whatever lies and manipulations had been fed to her. And here I thought she was smarter than that, not selling herself to the devil.“Hi.” I forced a smile to my lips. My smile was like I was carrying the world over my shoulder, like someone just let me down. She stalked in my direction, dropping her bag on the bed. “Sorry, it didn’t work out.”I sighed, crossed my legs over the other. “How would it? I killed her brother, and I just killed my father before I left.”She wasn’t even surprised that Francesco, her partner, was dead. She pouted her lips and untied her coat, s
