Chapter 22

Kaelen’s POV

I hadn't slept a single wink. Every time I closed my eyes, the screech of tires rang in my ears and I could recall Aurora frozen on the asphalt, entirely paralyzed as death barreled down on her.

My heart had stopped at that second as I screamed out her name, hoping she'd respond and move away.

That slight twist in her body made all the difference before I could grab her off the road, saving her from certain death.

Six hours later, I still couldn't get the images of my

Chapter 23Aurora’s POVWhat the hell was wrong with me today?I couldn't focus on a single line of data at my desk. For the past two hours, my wolf had been pacing inside my chest, completely restless and refusing to settle down. I felt hot, distracted, and the skin beneath my left wrist was prickling so badly I could barely keep my fingers on the keyboard. The burning sensation under my silver bracelets was growing hotter by the minute, making me since. Unable to take it anymore, I practically bolted from the research annex and ducked into the staff bathroom, locking myself inside the nearest stall.I leaned my back against the door, panting as I quickly yanked the silver bracelets up my arm. The moment the metal moved, I choked back a gasp. The mate mark was bright red. My skin was raising and blistering right along the black swirling lines Kaelen had left on me all those years ago. It looked like a severe rash, but I couldn't explain the burning sensation. "Why the heck is

That slight twist in her body made all the difference before I could grab her off the road, saving her from certain death. Six hours later, I still couldn't get the images of my head, I couldn't find sleep. What if she died? What if I didn't reach her in time and it was too late? What if?I finally swung my feet off the bed, deciding that sleep was impossible. I checked my watch. It was barely dawn, but I couldn't sit in my empty house for another minute. I needed to see her to ensure she was breathing, whole, and safe.I took a quick shower, threw on a large cargo pants and a matching jacket and got into the car, heading to Gina's small apartment. I knocked twice a

Chapter 21Aurora’s POVThe ride to Gina’s apartment was completely silent and awkward. Kaelen kept both hands locked on the steering wheel, his eyes focused on the streets as if he expected that car to barrel out from another intersection at any second. I leaned my head against the cool glass of the passenger window, my right arm throbbing slightly beneath my knit sweater where he had taped the plaster over my scraped elbow. When he finally pulled up to the curb outside Gina's building, he turned off the engine. I couldn't help but notice that the security SUV he had ordered to watch the place was still parked down the block. Kaelen didn't say a word as he climbed out, walked around the hood, and opened my door. He grabbed my purse and quietly walked me up the steps of the porch. Before I could even reach for the spare key, the front door swung wide open.Gina stood in the doorway, smiling mischievously. But the moment her eyes landed on us, her gaze dropped straight to the w

Chapter 20 Aurora’s POVI closed my eyes, ready to welcome the pain of the collusion, and possibly certain death. But then I heard my name hazily and a pair of arms yanked me by the waist, throwing me off my feet and down on the concrete in slow motion. My elbows hit the asphalt and I could feel a blinding pain. One second I was looking at the bright headlights coming at me. And the next, I heard my name and then a force from nowhere threw me on the floor. I could see the taillights of the truck speeding off, without even bothering to turn back. It missed me by a single inch. If I had been leaning even slightly forward, the side mirror would have taken my head off.I scrambled backward on my hands and knees, my heart racing violently against my ribs, so loud it was ringing in my ears. I blinked through the strands of hair stuck to my forehead, my eyes wide with terror as I tried to process what had just happened.Right in front of me, Kaelen was clutching my shoulder protective

Chapter 19Aurora’s POVLiam stood there for a few seconds, his face bright red, looking down at the sandwich in his hands and then Kaelen stomping away. “Did the boss bring you food?" He asked curiously. I just sighed, "something like that.” "Aurora, I am so sorry. I didn't mean to—""It's fine, Liam," I interrupted softly, rubbing my temples. "Seriously, don't worry about it. Thank you for the food." I took the container from him and gave him a small nod. Liam stood there for a few seconds, gawking at the trash can. “Is he mad at you? Did you do something wrong?""It's fine, Liam," I insisted, getting a little impatient with the topic. "Seriously, don't worry about it. It’s just... Nothing."Liam set the container down on the edge of my desk, but instead of rushing out, he pulled up a swivel chair and sat down. He looked genuinely concerned, his boyish face serious for the first time in a long while. "Hey, look, if you want me to back off, I will. But you really shouldn't skip

Chapter 18Aurora’s POVFinding out about Kaelen and Gina's lies made me feel foolish. How could I not have seen it? Well, Kaelen was a gentleman and all that, it Gina clearly had been casual and vague about it all. In fact, she acted bored with him. I should have known it was all a charade. I should have not beat myself up every time he got close to me or kissed me. You shouldn't have kissed him to start withA very stubborn voice reminded me and I groaned. That voice was right. I had spend hours avoiding Kaelen at work, unable to face him. Now that Gina was clearly not in the way, I didn't now how to think of Kaelen. Was he truly single? Did he have another real girlfriend? "Stop it, Aurora, stop acting like a whore,” I muttered to myself and turned on my sister's couch. Sleeping on my little sister’s living room couch was like a masterclass in physical torture.Between my knees practically hitting my chin on the short cushions and my brain completely refusing to shut off, I
